Candidates are invited to apply for the above position to work at our Hillcrest Place home located in Brandon, MB.
The Assistant Cook works under the supervision of the Food Services Manager. He/she prepares and serves all foodstuffs for residents and staff according to the menu, standardized recipe and meal guide exercising due regard for sanitation and quality. He/she assumes ‘in charge’ responsibility in the temporary absence of the Head Cook and FSM.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Understand and support the Resident Bill of Rights.
- Responsible for the production of the menu adhering to standardized recipe, and meal guide.
- Responsible for the service, quality and attractive presentation of the meals to residents, guests and staff. Observing resident preferences through suitable alternative choices.
- Understanding and ensuring that the needs of residents on therapeutic diets and/or modified consistencies are met.
- Ensuring that correct sanitation processes are used in the food production cycle and through completion of the planned sanitation program for the department.
- Participate in resident satisfaction through CQI auditing and involvement in the departmental CQI process.
- Understand and communicate safety/WHMIS issues and participate in regular emergency procedure exercises.
- Participate in department, RC team meetings and others as directed and provide information to department.
- Ensure the maintenance of effective relationships with residents and staff inside the department and throughout the facility.
- Perform other related duties as requested by the Food Services Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Grade XII, preferred, and graduate of Red Seal Certificate Program or
- Grade XII, preferred, with written/verbal English language competency, and basic mathematical skills. Level I - Red Seal Certificate Program or a minimum of 1 year’s work experience in institutional cooking. Experience with therapeutic diets is an asset.
- All Dietary Department staff must present a Foodsafe – Level I Certificate within 6 months of employment date.
- Strong interpersonal and motivational skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and make decisions.
- Computer skills are an asset.
- A thorough knowledge of practical cookery, baking and sanitation practices in the institutional setting.
- Hand/eye co-ordination, visual, hearing acuity and fine motor skills to perform duties.
- Physical ability to perform duties including extensive standing, walking, lifting (up to 20 kgs.) and rotation movement of shoulder/elbow.
- Ability to perform job safely and without causing personal injury.
Ability to work with frequent interruptions, minimal supervision and to a defined time.
