Health Care Assistant Instructor Part-time Job

Instruct lab course in the Health Care Assistant program to assist students to acquire
personal care skills within the parameters of the Health Care Assistant role. Through
hands-on lab experience, develop caregiver skills that maintain and promote the comfort,
safety and independence of individuals in care facilities and community contexts.
Job Description:
Instructors teaching Lab, Practice Education or Theory courses, duties include
but are not limited to:
· Prepare all materials required for instruction
· Evaluate student performance
· Mark all assignments and assign final grades
· Maintain regularly scheduled office hours on campus
· Attend regularly scheduled department and faculty meetings
· Participate on University committees as required
· Work collaboratively with other HCA faculty members and staff
· Liaise with community complex care facilities, assisted living sites and home
support agencies
· Adhere to the duties and responsibilities as stated in the Collective Agreement.

Experience, competencies & qualifications
- Current unrestricted (i.e., no conditions on license or provisional registration) full registration as a licensed practical nurse, registered nurse or registered psychiatric nurse with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM)
- Experience in home support and multi-level/complex care
- Two or more years of full time Canadian nursing experience (1 year = 1400hrs) with relevant knowledge of the Canadian health care system, the roles and responsibilities of healthcare team members and current policies and procedures within residential and community care settings. Nursing work experience to include: Experience in working with older adults with complex health needs; and Experience or orientation (e.g., shadow shifts) in home support and multi-level/complex care.
- Demonstrated ability to teach adult learners, which may be evidenced by satisfactory references, positive performance evaluations, and student course evaluations OR completion of the Provincial Instructor Diploma Program (or equivalent education)
- Evidence of completion of course work in Indigenous cultural safety and humility
- Able to verify vaccine status as required by the Provincial Health Officer for those working in long term care settings
- Evidence of completion of the Health Care Assistant Practice in BC course available on the LearningHub as part of their orientation/on-boarding. This will support a current understanding of the role of the HCA within BC.
- Computer skills: proficient in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, email, online course platform
Knowledge and/or experience in online instruction an asset
Additional Notes:
- There will be a probationary period for all new faculty members in accordance with the Collective Agreement of the Capilano University Faculty Association.
- All candidates will be required to demonstrate competency in theory, lab and/or clinical teaching (depending on the job posting) by preparing and presenting a lesson from the HCA curriculum to an evaluation committee.
- Faculty members are expected to maintain currency in their field through appropriate professional development activities. They are responsible to report annually on these activities.
- Consistent with the BCCNM regulations, ‘recent’ is considered to be within the past five years.
