We are seeking a passionate, innovative engineer who brings the technical, interpersonal, and leadership skills for the Chief Engineer, Minor position on Cortes Island.  

 

The Role 

Reporting to the Senior Chief Engineer, this position is responsible for the operation and maintenance of a ship’s mechanical, electrical and propulsion systems and will perform the following duties: 

 

  • Standing an engineer room watch; reviewing and making entries to engine logs; taking action to identify and resolve potential or existing problems with mechanical, electrical of propulsion systems; and keeping the Master appraised of the condition of the vessel 
  • Standing by the controls during manoeuvring and is prepared to take over the controls of the vessel in emergency situations 
  • Supervising and directing the work of a small engine room crew engaged in repair, maintenance, and watch-keeping duties; and ensuring that the crew is trained in firefighting and emergency duties 
  • Planning and conducting maintenance, repairs and alterations to all ship’s systems; and completing emergency repairs 
  • Completing a variety of reports on fuel, lube oil, machinery failures, accidents, discrepancies in log readings, or any undue incidents affecting the vessel 
  • Overseeing ordering of stores, spare parts and tools; ensuring there is sufficient water and fuel on board; and conducting monthly inventory 
  • Liaising with all departments and with external contractors to coordinate repair work; determining specifications and costs for refit; participating in refit activities; handling complaints from staff regarding equipment problems in other departments; and coordinating ship inspections with regulatory agencies 
  • Carrying out fire and boat drills; and responding to emergency situations 
  • Providing orientation, guidance and informal training to other employees 

 

What you bring to the team 

Education: 

  • 3rd Class Motor Certificate or Higher 
  • Valid Seafarers Medical 

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 

  • Ability to develop and recommend long term solutions to improve operational efficiency on all operating systems 
  • Ability to research and determine the most cost effective and appropriate repair, replacement and procurement of assets ensuring operational viability 
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in detailed formal reports in a clear, concise and accurate manner 
  • Ability to supervise staff, identify training requirements, and to resolve disputes by taking necessary action, including discipline 
  • Considerable knowledge of dry-dock and machinery refit procedures, and of shipyard practices

The Role

As a member of our shipboard crew, roles and responsibilities will vary depending on the position and the vessel. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Carrying out pre-sailing routine; starting-up main engines and/or Engine Room machinery; completing shipboard checks; and shutting down engines and machinery at the end-of-day.
  • Conducting watchkeeping duties including monitoring pressure levels, temperature levels, and condition of all equipment; maintaining fuel, lube oil, air and water levels; taking samples; handling chemicals; cleaning related filters; and checking all plumbing and electrical systems throughout the vessel.
  • Observing and recording information in Engine Room logs and daily workbook; completing inspection check-off lists, maintenance logs, battery logs and safety equipment inventory.
  • Performing routine maintenance on all deck, engine room, catering machinery, and equipment; troubleshooting and repairing mechanical breakdowns; and assisting with the overhaul of major components.
  • Overseeing and assisting in the transfer of fuel, lube oil, and waste oil; taking soundings.
  • Assisting in the annual refit; test-running emergency generator, fire sprinkler, bilge and ballast pumps; ensuring submersible bilge pump and compartment valves are working; servicing emergency escape breathing gear; controlling stores and inventory; and training Assistant Engineers.
  • Performing occasional tasks including servicing sewage system and purifiers; testing fuel injectors; and draining and cleaning injector cooling tanks.

What you bring to the team

  • Transport Canada Third Class Motor Certificate of Competency (CoC) or higher — or an equivalent CoC from a country recognized under a reciprocal agreement with Transport Canada
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Strong technical expertise, leadership, and interpersonal skills essential for the safe and efficient operation and management of ship machinery and equipment
  • Solid background managing a team of junior engineers fostering a culture of safety, respect, inclusion, and continual learning. Previous experience working and managing a team in a union based environment is considered an asset

What you bring to the team 

This position requires Marine Emergency duties training – STCW Basic Safety (MED A1 and MED B2) and Proficiency in Survival Craft (MED B1). You have an ability to prioritize and complete tasks in a safe and timely manner while monitoring and maintaining mechanical, electrical, and propulsion systems.   

A mechanical background including formal training and/or a Transport Canada Engine Room Rating certificate is considered an asset. Preference will be given to those with a 4th Class Motor Certificate.
