JOB SUMMARY

The Workplace Safety, Prevention and Compliance Branch is responsible for the development and implementation the Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) and to provide occupational health and safety resources to support all City of Ottawa departments. The Branch creates and executes corporate Occupational Health & Safety initiatives and ensures the integration of the OHSMS with strategic management and decision processes.  

You are responsible for providing support to the Program Manager and Safety Consultants in the Workplace Safety, Prevention & Compliance Branch related to corporate safety programs, projects and initiatives.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of 1 year post secondary certificate in occupational health and safety.

Minimum two (2) years of related fieldwork safety experience, requiring client service, organizational, and time management skills
 

KNOWLEDGE

  • Extensive knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safey Act, Canada Labour Code Part II and their regulations.
  • Workplace Safety and Insurance Act
  • Regulation 1101 First Aid Requirements
  • CSA Z1000 – Occupational Health and Safety Management
  • Auditing processes, procedures
  • Generally accepted safety policies, best practices and industry standards
  • Records management practices and techniques
  • Unionized environments, collective agreements 

COMPETENCIES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Demonstrates tact, diplomacy and discretion, and maintains strict confidentiality
  • Proficiency in researching health and safety information
  • Interpret and translate legislation into common language
  • Proficiency at an intermediate/advanced level of SharePoint (libraries, lists and document sets)
  • Proficiency at an intermediate/advanced level in MS O365 to support the production of documents, spreadsheets, reports and presentations
  • Strict attention to detail and accuracy
  • Adaptable to change and reliable
