We are looking for people across all our rich diversity to help keep the City of Edmonton clean as a Waste Drop-off Operator.
Use your expert driving skills to build your career! You will provide the critical service of collecting refuse and recyclables from Recycling Depots, Eco Stations, City Facilities and Residential Customers.
What will you be doing?
- Expertly operate a tandem PendPac/Roll-off or similar collection vehicle to collection sites and disposal points
- Collect recyclables and refuse from citywide Recycle Depots, Eco Stations, City Facilities, and Residential Customers, and deliver these materials to appropriate markets and disposal locations
- Ensure all scheduled collections are completed on time and coordinate delivery with marketplaces as part of the Waste Drop-Off team
- Select the most efficient routes for travel to and from work areas and disposal locations
- Record materials collected, weights, times and locations of pickups on the daily progress sheet
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections, follow regularly scheduled maintenance and report defects on collection vehicles
- Answer questions and/or complaints from the public concerning the recycling depot program
- Maintain a clean and sanitary collection vehicle, including cleaning hoppers and traps daily
- Maintain a positive customer service attitude and adhere to all work, safety and environmental regulations/procedures
Work Environment: Extended periods of driving in all weather conditions. Physically strenuous labour is required when loading and unloading roll-off bins and cleaning material from around recycling depot bins.
Qualifications
- Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by some truck driving experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience, including 1 year of experience driving vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight of 14,000 kilograms or greater
- 5 years of experience working in Waste Services, Collection Services
- 3 years of experience driving PendPac and Roll-Off Trucks
Assets:
- Knowledge of policies, procedures and Bylaws related to the City's Recycle Depot program
- Defensive Driving Course, current First Aid Certificate
Skills Required for Success:
- Ability to manipulate hydraulic bin-handling controls to minimize damage to bins and avoid overhead hazards at collection sites
- Physical ability and manual dexterity to perform the duties of this class including driving for prolonged periods (up to 10 hours per day), heavy manual labour in adverse weather conditions, including the ability to load recycling, refuse and bin containers
- Ability to complete progress reports, interpret and follow maps, and understand, execute and prepare oral and written instructions
- Good interpersonal skills to work well with other City employees and members of your team, and to communicate respectfully with the public
- Knowledge of appropriate material handling practices to avoid skin and eye contamination, cuts, slipping and associated mishaps
- Demonstrated ability to work in a fully integrated manner across the Department/Branch/Section

Conditions of Employment:
- Valid Alberta Class 3 driver’s license with Air Brakes Endorsement (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
- Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, Sunday - Saturday
