In this dual classed position you will be a Crew Leader reporting to the Turf Operations Team Leader during the Summer season (from approximately April to October), and will be responsible to lead, participate, and facilitate the work of OSO (Open Space Operations) field crews performing Turf Maintenance. During the Winter season (from approximately November to March), you will be a Labourer II, reporting to the Snow and Ice Crew Leader, performing semi-skilled manual labour related to snow removal and maintenance of outdoor ice surfaces.
As a Crew Leader you will:
- Provide field level supervision and hands on leadership for Turf Management crews performing a wide variety of semi-skilled manual duties in the delivery of approved work plans
- Inspect and approve completed work
- Be responsible for maintaining effective working relationships with customers, the public and crew members
- Provide input into the annual budget process and monthly variance reporting processes
- Assist with the registration, orientation and training of staff
- Promote a safe work environment
- Promote environmental management practices
- Monitor and evaluate attendance and performance of crew members
- Respond to 311 Notifications using SAP
- Apply knowledge of procedures for Fleet Services for equipment timelines, taking in equipment for repairs and services
- Other related duties as assigned
As a Labourer II you will:
- Operate and be responsible for the minor maintenance of one or more of the following types of equipment: riding grass mowers, riding snow blowers and brooms, large tractors and front end loaders, chainsaws, water pumps, generators, sandblasters, weedeaters, rototillers, mowers, edgers, sod cutters, aerators and power tools
- Operate City vehicles and small power tools
- Adhere to standard operating procedures and essential safety measures
- Participate and follows Safety and Environmental Programs
- Attend and participate in tailgate/safety meetings
- Perform hazard assessments
- Ensure work site is safe and crew is working in a safe responsible manner
- Prioritize work assignments (daily and weekly)
- Assist in determination of material required for jobs based on work orders (follow instructions in work order)
- Load appropriate and required material onto service vehicle for job prior to leaving the yard
- Ensure all tools and equipment are ready to use prior to going to work site
- Provide customer service and appropriately communicate with public & other employees
- Accurate time sheet entry
- Coach and mentor less experienced labourers
- Remove snow by hand and equipment and maintenance of outdoor ice surfaces and skating rinks
- Ice maintenance preparation as required
- Participate and follow Safety and Environmental Programs
- Other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years post secondary diploma
- 3 years progressively responsible experience in parks construction/maintenance or municipal turf maintenance operations
- Demonstrated supervisory skills and ability
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
- Standard First-Aid certificate
- Must be physically capable of performing the duties assigned to the class and be able to work in all weather conditions
- Must be able to work in day, night and weekend shifts up to 10 hours per shift
- Knowledge of safety precautions
- Basic computer skills (email, data entry)

- Crew Leader: $37.01 (Hourly); $77,276.88 (Annually)
- Labourer II: $31.302 (Hourly); $65,358.58 (Annually)
