Embark on a fulfilling career as an Electrical Safety Codes Officer II. This position has direct interactions with a variety of customers and stakeholders by providing expert technical information and granting permits and/or providing inspections. This process of mechanical plans examination involves contact with developers, contractors and building owners and citizens.
What will you do?
- Conduct plans examination and review of permit applications for new electrical systems, changes or alterations to buildings and structures by assessment for compliance with bylaws, codes, regulations and other municipal standards.
- Inspection of buildings during construction, renovation or alterations to ensure conformance with approved plans, requirements, Alberta Safety
- Codes Act and Canadian Electrical Code.
- Notify applicants of findings by appropriate correspondence and reports.
- Coach applicants to resolve issues related to a particular permit application and follow up on conditions and notices to ensure deficiencies are corrected.
- Create and issue permits including authority to withhold, suspend, revoke and extend permits through existing processes. Keep accurate records in POSSE
- Grant detailed permits for construction to proceed at different stages as per submitted and approved plans.
- Provide interpretations and information relating to the Canadian Electrical Code, bylaws or other regulations to the contractors, designers, developers or citizens, as applicable.
- Other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Completion of the twelfth (12th) school grade
Journeyman electrician certification recognized in Alberta and six (6) years of relevant experience after receiving that journeyman certification
OR - Electrical Engineering technologist diploma in a related field or equivalent recognized in Canada and eight (8) years of relevant experience in the building construction industry after obtaining that diploma
OR - Electrical Engineering degree recognized in Canada and eight (8) years of relevant experience in the building construction industry, at least one of which must be completed after obtaining that degree
Registered as a Safety Codes Officer having satisfactorily completed training achieving certification as Electrical Group A with Safety Codes Council in the Province of Alberta
Skills required for success:
- Strong knowledge of standard methods, techniques, materials, tools and equipment employed in the building construction trades with experience involving residential, part 9 and part 3 projects
- Strong knowledge of the Safety Codes Act, the Canadian Electrical Code, City Bylaws and related policies, procedures and regulations as they pertain to residential buildings. Must possess the ability to analyze and interpret legislation
- Ability to recognize construction that does not meet the intent of the Canadian Electrical Code or hazardous conditions pertaining to building construction
- Determine structural stability of buildings and structures through review of plans or on-site inspections
- Ability to analyze and interpret simple plans or designs prepared by applicants, architects and/or engineers
- Verbal and written communication skills to interact and educate citizens, architects, engineers, developers, etc. about Safety Codes

Conditions of Employment:
- Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) security clearance that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and is a requirement of this position, there may be a cost associated with this requirement.
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent) is a requirement of this position. Must obtain business auto insurance for personal vehicle use on City business

Hours of Work:
This position requires you to work different hours per week at defined periods of the year.
- Approximately April to September: 40 hours per week
- Approximately September to April: 33.75 hours per week
The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.
Salary Range:
- 33.75 hours per week: $47.292 - $59.431 (Hourly) $83,316.68 - $104,702.56 (annually)
- 40 hours per week: $44.692 - $56.168 (hourly; $93,316.90 - $117,278.78 (annually)
