As an Equipment Operator II in Infrastructure Operations, your primary responsibility will be to revitalize and upkeep parkland areas. You will utilize a variety of equipment, including but not limited to the Toro 5910 wide-cut mower, toolcat, skidsteer, and 120hp tractor loader. These may be equipped with various attachments such as rear mount aerators, material handlers, fertilizer spreaders, snowblowers, and box planers.
Here’s the work that you can expect to perform in this role:
- Proper operation and daily maintenance of all equipment included in the operation of tasks: Skidsteer, tractor loader, Groundsmaster 5910, toolcat and 3 ton water truck
- Safely and effectively operate equipment to complete a variety of tasks as related to the development and maintenance of Edmonton’s parkland
- Perform daily inspection of equipment, report deficiencies and carry out minor maintenance requirements
- Safe handling and application of herbicides using backpack sprayers, tank and gun set-ups, and boom sprayers
- Scouting and monitoring of weed populations, participating in decision-making process to determine when action thresholds have been met
- Accurate identification of undesirable species and treatment in accordance with City policies, federal and provincial regulations
- Accurate record keeping of volumes, rates, and locations of applied products
- Knowledge of federal Migratory Bird Act, ability to perform bird sweeps to mitigate potential for negative interactions with nesting birds and contravention of the Act
- Perform other related duties as required
Qualifications
- Completion of Grade 10 or higher
- A minimum of 1 year of experience operating Skidsteer, tractor loader, Groundsmaster 5910, toolcat, 3 ton water truck
- A minimum of 1 year of experience handling and applying herbicides
Skills required for success:
- Demonstrated knowledge of equipment operation, maintenance, and repair
- Ability to troubleshoot common pump and small engine problems
- Knowledge of Parks and Roads Services Standard Operating Procedures, Hazard Assessments and Health and Safety Programs
- Knowledge of City policies regarding herbicide application
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work well independently and as part of a larger team
- Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions and prepare simple work records
- Physical strength and agility to perform the work of the class
- Excellent customer service skills
- Adaptable to changing priorities due to managerial direction or changes in weather

Conditions of Employment:
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent)
- Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit
- Compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment (including medical monitoring and being clean-shaven for proper equipment fit) is a requirement for this position
