We’re hiring a Packaging Engineer to join our world-class team here at HelloFresh. Reporting to the Senior Category Manager, Packaging & Indirect, you will support both the day-to-day operations and long-term strategy initiatives for the Packaging team. This is an exciting time to join our packaging team as we are investing in the team more than ever with this brand new role and also a new internal Packaging laboratory. You should possess tremendous excitement and passion for playing a pivotal role in HelloFresh’s continuous pursuit to be the industry leader in the meal-kit space from a packaging perspective. To succeed in this role, you’ll need to have a genuine interest in providing solutions to practical packaging challenges, have advanced technical skills that you can apply to a fast-paced/dynamic environment, and also an entrepreneurial spirit to shape this new role and our lab to make a big impact on a hyper-growth organization that is revolutionizing the food industry.
Lettuce share what this role will be responsible for
- Work with vendors and the Procurement team to test and qualify packaging designs to expand the Packaging supply chain to enable top-line box growth.
- Coordinate testing with an external lab and our HF US lab while building our own local testing lab capacity here in Canada.
- Manage the planning and execution of packaging testing out of the Packaging Laboratory once it’s up and running ( requiring 2 days a week working from the lab in Mississauga, ON)
- Responsible for packaging lab upkeep and equipment calibration and maintenance
- Oversee thermodynamic testing to validate and qualify cold chain packaging systems
- Test packaging components and modify as necessary to meet functional parameters, cost targets, fulfillment, and shipping requirements
- Complete and communicate test reports to Packaging Procurement team, as well as cross functionally.
- Help provide packaging solutions to HelloFresh’s innovative launch of new products, services offerings, and expansion into new categories and markets.
- Conduct technical and scientific tests to gain further insights into packaging strategies, packaging material(s) comparison, and various other ad-hoc packaging research & development projects.
- Redevelop and maintain our ice matrix and upsizing logic
- Work with vendors to obtain packaging material specifications and manage internal specification process of documentation

- 2-4 years of relevant work experience in packaging engineering/science.
- Undergraduate degree in Packaging Science, Engineering, or other relevant area of study.
- Strong passion for packaging science
- Proven technical expertise in packaging materials testing, most notably in ISTA-certified testing methodologies, gained through industry experience
- Proactive, ambitious, and assertive: you take ownership of your work and think beyond the scope of a given assignment
- An entrepreneurial mindset and a passion for solving complex problems
- Ability to work with ambiguous or abstract concepts/information and synthesize options for HelloFresh and our management to incorporate into future decision making.
- Excellent excel and analytical skills to create various databases and spreadsheets
- Experience with end to end R&D and packaging innovation projects
- General knowledge of or interest in learning more about fast-paced startup and/or the food and beverage industry

- Maintain/ Monitor/Test log all steam generating requirements by operation code

- Ensure all work performed complies with governing practices, codes and regulations
- Will do full rounds, 3 times daily minimum
- Independent running the whole powerhouse and evaporators

What You’ll Bring:
- You have a 4th Class Stationary Engineer license or Refrigeration B and three to five years experience in a shift/operating role
- Experience with freon refrigeration, would be an asset
- Must be able to work 8 hours shifts, Monday-Friday days and overtime required
- Preference will be given to applicants holding Refrigeration B Operator License
