Fire prevention programs, fire code compliance, and public education campaigns make the city a safer and healthier place to live and play. Edmonton’s Fire Prevention area investigates complaints, conducts inspections, engages with the community, issues permits, and implements safety programs to mitigate and manage risks to the community.
Fire Prevention Officers are expected to interpret and apply codes, standards and bylaws in an appropriate and consistent manner that meets the intent and objective of each body of legislation. Officers will be expected to have a level of understanding necessary to provide advice on challenging code matters, while ensuring their daily actions promote Edmonton Fire Rescue Services strategic priorities. .
Your success will be measured by your ability to achieve results in a respectful, inclusive and service-minded way. With a focus on the City of Edmonton’s Cultural Commitments to Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, you will:
- Conduct inspections of buildings, structures and places in an assigned area to identify and locate fire hazards and ensuring compliance with the Safety Codes Act, the National Fire Code - Alberta Edition and related standards and City Bylaws
- Confirm building fire alarm systems, fire pumps, standpipe systems, sprinkler systems, emergency power generator systems, smoke control systems, elevator control systems are functional
- Communicate and educate property owners, tenants, managers etc. on safety requirements relevant to their living situation
- Review and interpret technical reports; examine building plans; review building development plans; research the fire behavior of materials and substances
- Conduct seminars and deliver presentations within the context of Community Safety
- Review construction site and fire safety plans
- Review alternative code solutions
- Issue corrective action reports, corrective letters, provincial orders and initiate legal action under the Safety Codes Act, or Municipal or Government Act
- Participate in safety promotions throughout the community and partnerships with the private sector
- Create and present public safety education and awareness programs
- Project work assigned by supervisory staff
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Completion of Grade 12
- Valid Class 5 Alberta Operator’s Licence is required
- Must have an entry level designation as a Fire Safety Codes Officer (Group A as prescribed by the Safety Codes Council) and a minimum one (1) year related experience
- NFPA 1031 Level 1 is described as an equivalent certification prescribed by the Safety Codes Council
- Additional content through the Safety Codes Council, specific to Alberta, will be required for full certification in the Province
- Must obtain a full certification level Fire Safety Codes Officer designation as prescribed by the Safety Codes Council / provincial authority within two (2) years of permanent employment. Fire discipline training includes but not limited to, Group A, Group B Level 1 and 2
- Must complete all classes of Fire Safety Codes Officer Inspector designation within four (4) years of permanent employment, including but not limited to Fire SCO Group E designation
- In lieu of one year related experience, the following qualifications may be considered:
Minimum of 2 years experience as a certified Safety Codes Officer in another discipline
OR
Completed Building Construction Technology Diploma (or a related diploma from a recognized institute) or a Journeyman certificate in a related field
OR
Minimum five (5) years in the construction industry or five (5) years experience as a member of a municipal Fire Service
- In lieu of one year related experience, the following qualifications may be considered:

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to deliver presentations to stakeholder groups and/or the public
- Previous experience with software and hardware related to the scope of work will be considered an asset. Examples are, but not limited to:
- Google Suite, Google Chrome, database input and management, general laptop / smartphone use and cloud based software
- Able to effectively problem solve, deal with difficult and potentially contentious situations effectively; excellent decision-making skills needed
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with colleagues and the community
- Certified FSCO B1 or B2 is considered an asset
- Certified NFPA 1031 level II is considered an asset and is prescribed as an equivalent to the B2 certification by the Safety Codes Council
- Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton

The Waste Services Branch is currently looking for a Waste Leader. This position is at the heart of the plant’s operations, playing a pivotal role in monitoring and controlling the various processes within the IPTF. This role requires a high level of vigilance and technical skill to ensure that all operations are running smoothly and efficiently, and that any issues are swiftly identified and addressed. The operator works closely with Plant Operators and the Plant Supervisor to maintain optimal plant performance.
The position will also be responsible for providing field-level supervision to teams of operators, as well as oversee the deployment of staff, and to collaborate with other Waste Leaders roles on program delivery. The leader will also be responsible for plant operations utilizing a HMI and field level operations on a daily basis and be familiar with PLC logics.
What will you be doing?
- Participate in and support the planning and development of Sustainable Waste Processing strategies, initiatives and performance measures
- Implement corporate, branch and section initiatives throughout the areas
- Implement consistent standards for customer service and the employee experience
- Monitor day to day performance of contracted maintenance service to ensure the work is being conducted according to the contract specifications
- Work in collaboration with Fleet & Facilities to ensure vehicles/equipment and sites are ready and available as required
- Maintain awareness of the budget and make recommendations to leadership regarding budget costs Identify and ensure the provision of resources (materials, equipment and supplies) required to implement approved work plans; procure require items (day-to-day purchases)
- Monitor the operational condition and efficiency of staffing, schedule and arrange for maintenance and repair activity, and respond to equipment malfunction and service problems
- Respond to incoming emergency requests such as chemical releases, etc. and ensure that release handling is conducted in accordance with approved procedures
- Conduct regular safety and work reviews to ensure work is being performed in a proper and safe manner
- Conduct incident/accident investigations including observations and near misses
- Provide support and backup for all Waste Leaders across the Section as required
- Ensure all City of Edmonton directives, policies and guidelines, e.g. OH&S standards and policies are followed in the execution of work
- Coordinate daily assignments to staff in accordance with plans and schedules, matching staff and equipment resources to specific needs
- Receive incoming complaints and issues from staff and provide required direction and support on a timely basis
- Provide feedback from field regarding purchases, or leased equipment
- Complete reports of finished work, variances from work schedules, observed field conditions and maintenance issues, equipment problems, staff performance and discipline issues etc.
- Provide continuous coaching and feedback to staff, including mentorship and providing advice and guidance
- Provide support in setting work performance expectations and job standards for crews; assist in the performance reviews and seasonal evaluations
Qualifications
- Completion of Grade 12
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in waste management processing and disposal activities and associated equipment is required
- Leadership/Aspiring Leaders/Supervisor 101 training or equivalent or ability to complete the City of Edmonton approved Supervisor training within an 18-month time frame of employment in this position
Skills Required for Success:
- Considerable knowledge of the equipment, procedures, and associated policies and Bylaws related to the City’s Waste Management processes
- Knowledge and hands on skill in the operation of loaders, excavators, skid steers, backhoes, forklifts etc.
- Experience with using a HMI to operate a plant, Geoware, SAP plant maintenance and google sheets
- Knowledge and experience with scada operating systems in a plant environment that includes boilers
- Skilled in the operation of vehicles and associated equipment, the use and demonstration of proper lifting techniques and safety procedures
- Extensive knowledge of OH&S legislation, Enviso and WHMIS
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Ability to effectively supervise the daily ongoing activities of a large workforce, including performance monitoring, and attendance management
- Exceptionally strong communication (written and verbal), customer service, interpersonal and decision making skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a multidisciplinary team environment

Reporting to the Director, Corporate Records, Elections and Information Management and coordinating with the Office of the Chief Communications Officer, the Senior Elections Communications Advisor leads the work needed to ensure that voters, candidates, third party advertisers, Election workers, media and other stakeholders have trust and confidence in the election process. They are a member of the Election project leadership team and participate in election planning and decision-making, providing perspectives and advice on public perception, public trust and reputation.
Major Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement a strategic communications plan that adheres to all legislative requirements and broadly communicates information on opportunities to Run, Work, Vote in the 2025 Edmonton Election
- Lead the development and delivery of aspiring Candidate Virtual Engagement Sessions, voter outreach strategies, and manage urgent arising communications and public perception issues
- Ensure communications plans are inclusive, accessible and that they reach a diverse audience
- Play a key role in the Election Leadership Team by providing strategic communications advice to all aspects of the Election project
- Support the Director and Returning Officer by drafting communications and briefings for Senior Leadership as required
- Manage and coordinate media availabilities, including developing collateral such as backgrounders and media releases, and preparing spokespersons
- Work with Media Relations to obtain and track media coverage

Qualifications
