Job Summary
Duties & Responsibilities
- Supervises, trains, directs, schedules, and evaluates, including completion of annual performance reviews, assigned staff.
- Ensures that various inspection reports, daily reports, time sheets, leave report forms, staff injury investigation reports, vehicle and equipment accident reports, etc. are completed in a timely and accurate manner.
- Assists with the evaluation of Biological Services field operations and provides weekly and annual written reports.
- Receives, records and prioritizes week, mosquito, wildlife, and tree pest complaints and resolves related issues, as required.
- Performs field inspections and initiates and coordinates weed and Dutch elm disease management efforts with internal/external agencies to enforce the Weed Control Act and Dutch Elm Disease Regulations .
- Assists with the review and revisions of field operation documents; i.e. maintenance schedules, inventories, job numbers, etc.
- Assists with the development of processes, policies, standards and specifications.
- Supports and promotes a safe and positive workplace culture through a variety of initiatives and activities.
- Assists with the procurement and delivery of equipment and materials to field staff.
- Supports and promotes the health and safety of employees in accordance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act & Regulations in addition to the City of Saskatoon's Administrative Occupational Health & Safety Policies and departmental procedures.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
• Grade 12 education.
• Successful completion of a diploma in horticulture.
• Three years’ progressively responsible experience in the identification and control of mosquitoes, tree pest and diseases, including one year supervising staff.
• Successful completion of, or ability to successfully complete, recognized supervisory courses.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain within three months after hire, all relevant Saskatchewan Pesticide Applicator Permits.
• Possession of or ability to obtain within six months after date of hire, a valid first aid certificate.
• Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver's Licence.
• Current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.
• Considerable knowledge of insect taxonomy, weed and tree species, pests and diseases.
• Knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations as they pertain to the Parks Division.
• Demonstrated ability to supervise, direct train, develop and assess staff.
• Ability to monitor, collect, identify and analyze insect and disease samples in a field and laboratory environment.
• Ability to read and understand municipal and topographical maps and photographs..
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, assigned staff and the public.
• Skill in the use of a computer with word-processing, spreadsheet and database software
• Physical ability to perform the assigned duties, including outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
