Main Purpose & Function
Fleet and Manufacturing Services (FMS) support the City of Vancouver in being a service provider in all aspects of Fleet Management. The expertise and knowledge provided to internal and sometimes external clients by the Fleet and Manufacturing Services (FMS) includes: Engineering, Vehicle Procurement, Heavy Duty/Commercial/Automotive Maintenance and Repair, Quick Service Repairs, Machining, Mill Work, Fabrication,Vehicle Outfitting, Carpentry, Body Shop Vehicle Repair and Painting, Product Inventory/Ordering, and Small Equipment Repair.
The Journeyperson Metal Fabricator will work with members of the Fleet and Manufacturing Services team to ensure that quality and timely work is performed to support and service our clients. The challenge this busy environment offers is in the variety of work, from small and heavy equipment, to automobiles and light to heavy trucks, as well as Plant and Facilities maintenance, Manufacturing and Building maintenance.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Journeyperson Metal Fabricator will perform a variety of skilled shop and field work at the journeyperson level which includes: welding, fitting, brazing, heating, cutting and laying out tasks while you are repairing and maintaining City equipment, structures and buildings.
There is advanced work in tempering, cutting, straightening, bending, shaping and drawing out machinery part and tools. Duties will also include performing skilled welding, heating, cutting and tapping tasks utilizing steel, cast ironand other ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
Job functions will be performed in accordance with established trade practices. You may supervise the work of subordinates performing less complex related tasks. Some duties may be more complex and difficult requiring the use of independent judgement in determining methods and procedures in solving unusual problems related to complex fitting, fabrication, welding, layout and design of tasks. Assignments will be both written and verbal, and may be accompanied by sketches or blueprints.
The regular work schedule is from 3:10 PM to 12:34 AM, Monday to Friday. The successful candidate may be required to adjust shifts and locations as operationally required.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Completion of grade 10 supplemented by technical courses related to the work with considerable Journeyperson experience.
- Metal Fabrication Certificate of Qualification (T.Q.), Inter-Provincial Red Seal Endorsement or Certification of Apprenticeship.
- Red Seal certification is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools, materials and equipment used in the steel fabrication trade.
- Thorough knowledge of the use and care of tools and equipment in finishing and fitting a variety of metal parts and objects in the maintenance, overhaul and repair of construction and maintenance equipment.
- Considerable knowledge of the hazards and proper safety precautions of the trade.
- Ability to weld aluminum cast iron and steel, layout and make patterns.
- Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions which may be accompanied by sketches and diagrams.
- A demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with members of the public, suppliers,and internal clients.
- Agility, muscular coordination and sufficient strength to permit the performance of heavy manual labour.
Driver’s License and Record Checks:
- A current and valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License or higher and a Satisfactory National Safety Code driving record
- 5 years accumulation of no more than 9 points, not in excess of 3 points per single year
- 3 years accumulation of no more than 1 preventable work related driving or equipment operating accident in any single year

Initiate and carry out projects that improve efficiency and/or reduce operating costs.

Ensure city, province, and federal regulations relating to the maintenance department are always met.

Utilize continuous improvement strategies and remain well-informed of current and future technological developments.
You are best suited for the role if you have the following qualifications:

Post-secondary Degree/Diploma in a Technical discipline and/or skilled trades certification is preferred.

Proven leadership experience at a manager or supervisory level in maintenance or engineering is a prerequisite.

Strong knowledge of Preventative Maintenance, Mechanical/Electrical systems and quality control systems within a food manufacturing environment.

Strong communication and organization skills with ability to lead and develop a team of skilled trades staff.

Project planning experience is considered an asset.

Experienced in Microsoft Office programs.

Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), such as FIIX or SAP.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Installation & Troubleshooting
- Installs air conditioning, heating, and related equipment and components.

The Fleet & Manufacturing Services supports the City of Vancouver in being a service provider in all aspects of Fleet Management. Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Fleet servicing occurs primarily at the fully equipped Garage at Manitoba Yard which houses an employee base of approximately 150 employees from various Trades but also at several satellite facilities. As an Automotive Service Technician, you will work with members of the Fleet & Manufacturing Service team to ensure that quality andtimely work is performed to support and service our clients. A major part of this position will be to support the outfitting/up-fitting of new vehicles, including completing approved modification requests. Preference will be given to candidates who have knowledge and experience in; the installation of components, reading and creating electrical schematics, ability to build, design and troubleshoot electrical systems, and any practical experience in building fleet vehicles to meet customer’s needs. Qualifications
Education and Experience:
