The Industrial Electrician will be responsible for effective troubleshooting, repair, installation, and preventative maintenance of facility electrical distribution systems and equipment in an industrial setting. They will ensure safe plant operations and a safe working environment for all employees.

Snapshot of a Day-in-the-Life:

  • Read and interpret drawings, blueprints, schematics, and code specifications to determine lay-out of industrial equipment and installations
  • Conduct planned preventive & predictive maintenance and keep maintenance records
  • Actively participate in preventive maintenance program on building equipment processing equipment daily
  • Efficient production equipment set up, inspection and shutdown of all related equipment when required, including process changeovers
  • Assist in planning, organizing of work activities (drawing interpretation, parts preparation)
  • Program, troubleshoot, maintain and repair industrial equipment and automation including PLCs, HMI, frequency drives, temperature control and other related devices

What You’ll Bring:

  • Certified Journeyman Electrician with 1-2 years’ experience. Preference to those with proof of completing the Industrial Apprenticeship Program
  • Knowledge of conveyors, motors, pumps / compressor, electrical / electronic controls and high speed packaging equipment
  • Strong working knowledge of HMI's, electric motor controls, programmable logic controllers, basic wiring circuits and skills necessary to safely test common electrical systems and make minor repairs where permitted
  • 442A or 309A license required

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor, the successful candidate must be able to perform various mechanical, electrical and diagnotic repairs on our diverse fleet of City vehicles and equipment. The City hires Apprentices who will be paid a percentage of the rate paid to Service Technician/Welders depending on level of Apprenticeship.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • The successful applicant must be able to perform a variety of preventative maintenance and diversified repairs on the corporate fleet.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs to the corporate fleet as set forth by the policy of the Fleet Maintenance Section.
  • Complete work assigned on work orders in a timely manner with mandatory consultation with the Supervisor on all items of concern.
  • Competently read electrical schematics and use computers to diagnose electrical and electronic system faults.
  • Work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Must be skilled in the use of all tools and equipment related to the trade.
  • Must provide all necessary hand tools to perform required fleet repairs.
  • Must stay current with new technologies and equipment to perform repairs
  • The successful applicant will be placed on a call-out list and must be willing and available to return to work after normal working hours if called upon.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Minimum Grade 12 education along with valid Certificates of Qualification as a Truck & Coach Technician(310T), and Automotive Service Technician (310S) trade licenses from the Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities.
  • Technicians holding both 310T and 310S licenses will be remunerated as a Service Technician/Welder as per the collective agreement.
  • Technicians holding a 310T will be considered as an Apprentice and remunerated as an Apprentice as per the collective agreement until the 310S is attained.
  • Technicians holding a 310S will be considered as an Apprentice and remunerated as an Apprentice as per the collective agreement until the 310T is attained.
  • Five (5) years experience actively pursuing the trade as a Licensed Mechanic with four (4) years experience working in a repair facility performing fleet maintenance on a wide variety of diversified off road equipment, light, medium and heavy duty commercial licensed vehicles.
  • Additional courses in the mechanic's trade will be an asset.
  • Experience in gas and electric (Arc and Mig) welding.
  • Familiarity with computerized work orders and time logging.
  • Must be able to read electrical schematics and have experience in the use of computers to diagnose electrical and electronic system faults.
  • Must be able to work on the corporate fleet under inclement weather conditions from time to time.

Skills and Qualifications

  • HVAC tradesperson or designer with a minimum of 5 years directly related work experience in HVAC design and/or construction; work experience in plumbing design and/or construction is an asset
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the requirements of the Building Code Act, Ontario Building Code, and any other applicable law as they apply to HVAC systems; knowledge of the requirements that apply to plumbing systems is an asset 
  • Qualified as referenced in Division C Section 3.1.4. of the Ontario Building Code; or alternatively, eligible for appointment as an Intern Inspector
  • Qualify and maintain qualifications as referenced in Division C Section 3.1.4. of the Ontario Building Code, and attend appropriate courses/seminars to keep knowledge current
  • If appointed as an Intern Inspector, successful completion of Ontario Building Code qualification exams in ‘General Legal Process’, ‘HVAC House’ and ‘Building Services’ within six (6) months from date of hire, and ‘Plumbing House’ and ‘Plumbing All Buildings’ within eighteen (18) months from date of hire is required
  • Must be proficient in the reading and interpretation of drawings, specifications and other technical documents
  • Must have strong communication and customer service skills, and the ability to work in a team environment
  • Valid driver’s license and use of a personal vehicle is essential

Skills and Qualifications

  • The successful candidate must hold a valid - Truck and Coach Technician (310T) certificate and maintain it in good standing, demonstrating expertise in diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing mechanical issues.
  • Must have a valid G Driver’s License; D or C Ontario Driver’s License with a “Z” endorsement is preferred with a Driving Abstract acceptable to the city.
  • A preferred asset would be a current Ontario Government Certificate of Qualifications Automotive Service Technician (310S) as well.

  • Ability and willingness to stay current with new technologies and equipment to perform bus repairs
  • Additional courses in the mechanic’s trade will be an asset
  • Familiarity with computerized work orders preferred

Job Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Transit Maintenance, this position is responsible for the management of the Transit Building and Route team and to ensure Transit’s garage facilities and on-street and station/terminal stop infrastructure are properly maintained and meet the needs of the facility users and transit customers.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervising Building and Route staff through the creation of daily work tasks, coaching and mentoring to support individual and team performance, training on regulatory standards and standard operating procedures, payroll approval and conflict resolution.
  • Identifying, preparing and managing annual operating budget requirements for Transit’s garage facilities.
  • Working closely with Facilities Maintenance (Corporate Services) to review, track, evaluate and report on preventative and demand maintenance requirements which includes liaising with internal and external service contractors and trades to ensure operational activities within the facility are maintained and communication is provided to the facility users.
  • Overseeing and managing schedules as related to on-street and station/terminal stop infrastructure maintenance requirements, etc.
  • Ensuring facility assets and operational procedures are in compliance with operating standards, policies, procedures, practices and legislation as related to building codes, environmental regulations, etc.
  • Providing technical advice on Transit’s facilities, equipment and maintenance programs to ensure equipment standards meet Corporate requirements and best practices are clearly documented.
  • Conducting periodic audits of assigned facilities to ensure that proper emergency procedures are identified and in place, and comply with regulatory codes, safety standards, environmental regulation, fire plans and protect employees, visitors and corporate assets.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

 

Skills and Qualifications

  • A Diploma in a related field (e.g., Certificate of Facilities Management, Building Environmental Systems, Business, etc.) or a combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent.
  • A minimum of six (6) years’ progressive experience in facility operations or facility maintenance with two (2) or more years in a supervisory and leadership role preferably in a unionized Facilities Services environment.
  • Certifications or Designations Certifications related to facility management (e.g., Certificate of Facility Management Administrator (FMA), Property Administrator Certificate and Trade Certification) will be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of legislation related to health, safety and the environment (e.g., the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Environmental Protection Act, Weeds and Pesticides Act, Elevating Devices Act, etc.).
  • Understanding and application of codes and systems as related to the operations of Transit’s facilities (e.g., building and fire codes, electrical safety codes, Building Automation Systems, Facility Asset Management Systems, etc.).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) and familiarity with engineering drawings would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of collective agreements and experience with working in and/or supervising an unionized environment.
  • Project management best practices and experience that includes oversight and management of facility projects, contract administration, maintaining budgets, meeting targets and timelines and coordinating customer requirements.
  • Experience in effective people leadership through staff training and mentoring, facilitation of team relationships and conflict management.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to be able to communicate effectively and the ability to provide updates through reports and/or presentations.
  • A valid Ontario Class "G" driver's license is required to travel to various site locations and needs to meet and maintain corporate standards for a good driving record.

Hourly Rate/Salary: $ 86,858.00 - $ 115,812.00

HVAC Apprentice
The HVAC Apprentice will work under the supervision of a Journeyperson and within the limits of company policy and trade certification. They are responsible for operating facility systems, performing preventative and corrective maintenance, and routine services on mechanical and other systems. The HVAC Apprenticeship Program requires approximately 9,000 hours of training, with a combination of in-school, and on-the-job training.  Registered 313A Apprentice with G3 or G2 Gas License required.

These roles will work in collaboration with all key BGIS departments to ensure full support of all activities and play a key role in our INTEGRATED approach to operating buildings.
