We have an amazing team at Canadian Natural that is looking for a self-motivated individual with advanced time management skills and a strong work ethic to fill the role of Safety Trainer. Reporting to the Training Lead, you will perform a wide range of activities related to safety training. Your primary responsibility will be to deliver safety and supervisor training programs to Oil Sands workers.

  • Job location: Horizon Oil Sands - Fort McMurray, Alberta - Company sponsored fly-in/fly-out and camp facilities with flights from Calgary or Edmonton
  • Shift schedule: 8 days on, 6 days off, 10 hr shifts
  • Safety sensitive position: Yes

Key Accountabilities:

  • Deliver safety training programs to the Horizon Oil Sands site and occasionally to the Albian Oil Sands site. Examples of courses include: Confined Space, Safe Work Permit, Gas Monitor Training, Supervisor Training, Mobile Equipment Training
  • Perform all administrative duties associated with conducting training
  • Support ongoing evaluation and implementation of quality safety training programs by ensuring safety training is delivered as legislated and is compatible with Canadian Natural’s standards and procedures along with industry best practices
  • Assist with various program audits as well as deliver key messages or training in line with Canadian Natural's core value of safety when required
  • Research government regulations and provide advice as required

What You Bring to the Role:

  • Minimum of 5 years in Health & Safety and /or Oil & Gas Operations
  • Grade 12 or GED and a valid Class 5 driver’s license is required
  • Experience in Health & Safety, familiar with OH&S standards & practices and experience delivering training is desired
  • National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO), and/or Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety as well as education in adult learning would be considered an asset
  • Computer skills essential (i.e. Microsoft Office Suite)

4. Prepares logs or reports as required for patrol route; writes and/or types reports and/or enters information in a computer using standard grammar; inspects security control logs and takes action as required. 
5. Observes and reports incidents or suspicious activity to client representatives, company management, life/safety personnel or public safety authorities as appropriate for the circumstances and/or as required. 
6. Responds to incidents of fire, medical emergency, bomb threat, flooding, water discharge, elevator emergency, hazardous materials, inclement weather, and other incidents or conditions following procedures established for assignment, by the company, or through training or certification. 
7. Carries out specific tasks and duties of a similar nature and scope as required. 

 
 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AT ENTRY Additional qualifications may be specified and receive preference, depending upon the nature of the position. 

 
MINIMUM HIRING STANDARDS 
• Must be at least 18 years of age. 
• Must have a reliable means of communication (i.e., pager or phone). 
• Must have a reliable means of transportation (public or private). 
• Must have the legal right to work in the Canada. 
• Must have the ability to speak, read, and write English and French in the province of Quebec. 
• Must have a High School Diploma or GED. If not, must be willing to complete the GED program within six months.

2. Checks for unsafe conditions, hazards, security violations, and unauthorized persons; inspects buildings, grounds and security devices; monitors and sets security devices. 
3. Protects evidence or scene of incident in the event of accidents, emergencies, or security investigations; sets up barriers and signage, and provides direction or information to others. 
4. Prepares logs or reports as required for patrol route; writes and/or types reports and/or enters information in a computer using standard grammar; inspects security control logs and takes action as required. 
5. Observes and reports incidents or suspicious activity to client representatives, company management, life/safety personnel or public safety authorities as appropriate for the circumstances and/or as required. 
6. Responds to incidents of fire, medical emergency, bomb threat, flooding, water discharge, elevator emergency, hazardous materials, inclement weather, and other incidents or conditions following procedures established for assignment, by the company, or through training or certification.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AT ENTRY Additional qualifications may be specified and receive preference, depending upon the nature of the position.

This position has direct interactions with a variety of customers and stakeholders by providing expert technical information and granting permits and/or providing inspections. This process of mechanical plans examination involves contact with developers, contractors and building owners and citizens.

What will you do?

  • Conduct plans examination and review of permit applications for new electrical systems, changes or alterations to buildings and structures by assessment for compliance with bylaws,  codes, regulations and other municipal standards. 
  • Inspection of buildings during construction, renovation or alterations to ensure conformance with approved plans, requirements, Alberta Safety
  • Codes Act and Canadian Electrical Code.
  • Notify applicants of findings by appropriate correspondence and reports. 
  • Coach applicants to resolve issues  related to a particular permit application and follow up on conditions and notices to ensure deficiencies are corrected.
  • Create and issue permits including authority to withhold, suspend, revoke and extend permits through existing processes. Keep accurate records in POSSE
  • Grant detailed permits for construction to proceed at different stages as per submitted and approved plans.
  • Provide interpretations and information relating to the Canadian Electrical Code, bylaws or other regulations to the contractors, designers, developers or citizens, as applicable.

Qualifications

  • Completion of the twelfth (12th) school grade 
    Journeyman electrician certification recognized in Alberta and six (6) years of relevant experience after receiving that journeyman certification
    OR 
  • Electrical Engineering technologist diploma in a related field or equivalent recognized in Canada and eight (8) years of relevant experience in the building construction industry after obtaining that diploma
    OR
  • Electrical Engineering degree recognized in Canada and eight (8) years of relevant experience in the building construction industry, at least one of which must be completed after obtaining that degree
    Registered as a Safety Codes Officer having satisfactorily completed training achieving certification as Electrical Group A with Safety Codes Council in the Province of Alberta
