The vision for Parks and Roads Operation (PARS) is to inspire trust among employees, citizens and Council in our commitment and ability to maintain our city parks and roads infrastructure.

During the summer season (approximately April to October) under the Northwest District Operations, you will report work as a Labourer II responsible for:

  • Carry out a variety of semi-skilled manual tasks related to pothole repair, concrete repair, litter control and other related duties 
  • Maintain and operate basic tools and equipment such as pumps, tampers, jackhammers, small rollers and all equipment related to the task
  • Perform manual sidewalk cleaning, sweep sand from centre medians, load trucks and complete other general labourer duties as operationally required
  • Ensure all work is to be performed in accordance with the Branch's Occupational Health & Safety Program and Enviso - Environmental Management System (ISO 14001)
  • Perform other related duties as required

During the winter season (approximately October to April) under the Snow and Ice Control Program in the Northwest District, you will work as a Truck Driver III and be responsible for: 

  • Operate a tandem or single axle sand/plow while engaged in snow and ice control 
  • Load and unload materials
  • Perform routine maintenance duties, such as cleaning the truck box and worksite, changing blades and performing routine maintenance of vehicles and equipment
  • Be aware of obstacles adjacent to the road to avoid damage to Public Property when operating plow
  • Inform the lead hand of any on-the-road issues with equipment or observed accident or property damage
  • General labour including but not limited to: brushing, manual sidewalk cleaning, sanding, snow shoveling, pothole repairs, manually spread sand on icy areas and other snow and ice-related duties
  • Ensure all work is to be performed in accordance with the Branch's Occupational Health & Safety Program and Enviso - Environmental Management System (ISO 14001)
  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 10 
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in operating tandem or single axle sander/plow while engaged in snow and ice control, or an equivalent combination of training The City of Edmonton is committed to inclusive, respectful and experience
  • 1 year labourer experience related to district programs, i.e. pothole repair, etc.
  • City of Edmonton trained and pass on plow/sander
  • National Safety Code (NSC) course
  • Knowledge of PARS SOPs, hazards and safety precautions
  • Knowledge of the daily maintenance required on equipment and vehicles 
  • Ability to perform manual labouring duties, including  ability to lift 50lbs, repeatedly
  • Ability to work in the presence of asphalt, concrete, dust and noise in inclement weather and adverse traffic conditions
  • Ability to keep accurate documentation on daily activity cards
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results in the context of a respectful, inclusive and service-minded style
  • Ability to wear a respirator
  • Ability to work at various locations around the City, including areas that may not be reachable by public transit and satellite locations from trailers that will move throughout the summer season
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as being fit-tested for a respirator, steel-toed boots and hard hat, is a requirement of this position
  • Conduct work in a manner that complies with the requirements set out in the City's Environmental Management System (EMS)
  • Valid Alberta Class 3 driver’s licence with Air Brakes Endorsement (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position

Salary:

  • Labourer II: $31.302 (Hourly); $65,358.580 (Annually)
  • Truck Driver III: $32.036 (Hourly); $66,891.170 (Annually)
