JOB SUMMARY
The Network Engineering and Operations Branch provides network engineering and operational support and maintenance of the City of Ottawa’s network infrastructure and related networking solutions, which are key enablers of the delivery of all IT services to the corporate and residents.
You provide technical expertise for the management of corporate databases and related platforms and services. You are responsible for the day-to-day operations of a portfolio of databases and related services, and contribute to the ongoing planning for underlying infrastructures and architectures. You also lead database and related activities for complex projects, and actively participate in the unit’s and branch’s business planning functions.
Candidates for this position must have expertise with Oracle database administration and PL/SQL development.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of 3 year community college diploma in Computer Science or a related field. University degree is preferred.
Minimum of 5 years of information technology experience and a minimum of 3 years focusing on database administration and development
KNOWLEDGE
- Concepts, operations and management, infrastructure, architecture, configuration, performance, security, backup & restore, best practices and tools relating to Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL and other database platforms including open source and cloud-based database services (i.e., Azure, Oracle & AWS),
- Concepts, operations, scripting, security, best practices, and tools relating to Windows, Unix and Linux for database management and operations,
- General understanding of the information technology field, including the different sub-disciplines (i.e., application architectures, networking, servers, storage, cloud, and security) and their relationships with database architecture and management,
- Advanced programming methodologies, techniques, security standards, and tools for databases and related platforms and services (i.e., PL/SQL, T-SQL, Shell scripting, PowerShell, Python, etc.),
- Database related analytic concepts (i.e. data warehouses & data lakes)
- Database performance tuning processes, strategies, and tools,
- Industry trends and developments in database architecture, operations, management, and infrastructure management
- Project management
- Data transformation concepts and tools (i.e., SSIS, Data Factory)
- Data modelling techniques and practices
- Applicable legislation (e.g. the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act), and Payment Card Industry Standards
- Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers.
- Desirable Qualifications:
- Experience managing NoSQL and Graph database products
- Experience managing Azure cloud database services including analytical database services such as Data Lakes
- Experience with data transformation platforms such as SSIS, Data Factory
- Knowledge of Enterprise Architecture principles
