Main Purpose and Function

Under direct supervision, the Operations Worker II is responsible for a variety of tasks, which can include heavy physical effort and agility and the use of hand and/or motorized tools used for general horticulture maintenance, brushing for restoration projects, and trail maintenance. A current and valid Class 5 or higher Drivers License is a requirement of this position. The license must not include any restrictions that would affect the ability to legally and safely carry out the responsibilities of the position. Transportation arrangements must meet operational requirements of the Department. Applicants will be required to provide a current drivers’ abstract and claims history report – both available through ICBC's website. The successful candidates must be prepared to work in various park locations within the organization. This position is full time hours (7:00am - 3:30pm), Monday to Friday from April to August.

 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Successful candidates must have sufficient physical strength, stamina and coordination to perform heavy physical labour; ability to lift, push and pull heavy objects; ability to walk or stand continuously with frequent bending or twisting; ability to work close to moving machinery and in high traffic areas; ability to work on ladders, ability to work outside in all weather conditions, and on uneven surfaces; ability to use a variety of tools and equipment.

 

The Operations Worker II’s may be responsible for a variety of park operations tasks including digging, planting, weeding, raking and edging flowerbeds, sweeping and clearing pathways, cutting grass, operating mowers, using line trimmers and general turf care equipment, collecting and removing litter, as well as other duties as required.

 

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Up to completion of high school and some work experience in basic labour; horticulture training or experience an asset.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Fleet servicing occurs primarily at the fully equipped Garage at Manitoba Yard which houses an employee base of approximately 150 employees from various Trades but also at several satellite facilities. As an Automotive Service Technician, you will work with members of the Fleet & Manufacturing Service team to ensure that quality andtimely work is performed to support and service our clients. A major part of this position will be to support the outfitting/up-fitting of new vehicles, including completing approved modification requests. Preference will be given to candidates who have knowledge and experience in; the installation of components, reading and creating electrical schematics, ability to build, design and troubleshoot electrical systems, and any practical experience in building fleet vehicles to meet customer’s needs. A key part of the role requires knowledge of standard cleaning methods and the ability to learn new and effective methods to ensure the cleanliness of the facilities. The Building Worker is responsible for performing a variety of heavy cleaning tasks including stripping and waxing floors, cleaning windows, cleaning washrooms, showers and change rooms, carpet cleaning, emptying garbage, minor maintenance repairs and other related duties as required.

 

Building Worker - Mobile Parks

The Mobile Parks Building Worker will provide janitorial services for the citywide inventory of public bathrooms and change rooms in parks. The Building Worker must also be able to operate a vehicle on a daily basis in a safe and efficient manner. Duties include, but are not limited to: opening, stocking, spot and deep cleaning, and locking facilities.

 

The successful candidate must be able to work a variety of shifts including mornings, afternoons, evenings, overnights and on weekends. 

 

Qualifications
Education and Experience:

  • Completion of a recognized certification program in building services work and some related experience.
  • Experience performing a variety of routine manual tasks in care, cleaning and general maintenance of buildings.
  • Experience operating and using janitorial tools, equipment and supplies.
  • WHMIS is preferred.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of materials, methods, safety practices and simple equipment used in janitorial and maintenance work.

  • University graduation in the Social Sciences, Public Policy, Urban Planning, Public Health, Indigenous Studies, or other related discipline, preferably at the Master’s level, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Experience working in a municipal planning setting, and an extensive understanding and experience with good results in multi-sectoral planning and implementation of strategic and complex social initiatives. Considerable experience working in this area preferably supplemented by supervisory experience.
  • Experience with data management, governance, and tools; analytical approaches, methods, and tools; and production and delivery of presentations, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge and experience in health and well-being, planning, research and analysis along with knowledge of social policy development, in particular health equity and the determinants of health. 
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of the research and evidence upon which the Healthy City Strategy is based, such as health equity, social determinants of health, Indigenous well-being concepts, proportionate universalism, and other related theories and practices.
  • Considerable experience leading senior internal and external stakeholders, steering committees, senior personnel in civic departments and dedicated staff team and consultants in the development, implementation and monitoring of a strategic initiative.
  • Working knowledge and application of social, economic, and ecological trends and statistics
  • Ability to create, operationalize and measure effective social policy through community development and other innovative approaches.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to form strategic partnerships to address complex social issues from a wide range of civic and senior government officials, non-profit and private sector representatives and residents.
  • A strong understanding of social sustainability and how it relates to economic, ecological, and cultural sustainability.
  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Ability lead strategic efforts, manage conflict, and to exercise a high degree of judgement and independence toward delivery of outcomes.
  • Strong project management and organization skills, including the ability to set and adapt to changing priorities in a complex, fast paced work environment. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including the preparation of reports and presentations;
  • Ability to supervise staff and/or contractors and ability to manage budgets
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a team member
  • Proficient technological skills.
  • Ability to meet transportation needs.
