JOB SUMMARY
Transit Operations provides safe, reliable and courteous transit services and excellence in customer service delivery to 100 million transit customers per year, by means of conventional bus, para transit and rail operations. The Transit Bus and Para Transit Operations team provides safe, reliable, efficient, effective, on time, courteous and cost-effective rapid transit service to a growing and diverse City of Ottawa.
You operate City of Ottawa buses in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act and corporate policy. You also promote a customer service mindset when interacting with the general public and provide a safe, comfortable, efficient and reliable transportation service.
Bus Operators who temporarily work in the roles of Operator/Bilingual Sightseeing and Charter Sightseeing and Operator/Platform Instructor will be paid the appropriate rate or differential for the time that this work is performed.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of Grade 12.
Minimum of 5 years of driving experience with a clean driving record free of demerit points and including ideally a minimum 3 years of relevant customer service experience including direct contact with the public and dealing with a diverse population.
Public Urban transit experience is an asset

Applicants must be able to meet the physical requirements of the job including, but not limited to, performing the following tasks, which are repetitive and constant during a normal shift as a Bus Operator:
- Ability to sit for long periods of time in the driver’s seat while wearing a seat belt
- Ability to bend, twist body and to manipulate controls independently or simultaneously at any given time, while wearing a seatbelt in the driver’s seat
- Ability to “reach over-head” with both arms to manipulate controls
- Constant twisting and neck rotation of different ranges to check mirrors, bus passes, etc.
- Ability to perform required MTO pre-trip inspection, which involves walking, bending, squatting, climbing, reaching, twisting body in many different positions
- Medium duty lifting while assisting customers with special needs
- Constant gripping, pulling and pushing to manipulate control (steering controls, control valves, etc.)
- Bending, stooping, crouching and twisting in order to keep stairway clear of ice and snow build-up
- Ability to manipulate dual foot controls independently or simultaneously at any given time

JOB SUMMARY
The Transportation Services department is responsible for providing a holistic transportation hub focused on addressing the planning, implementation, operations and delivery of all modes of transportation in the City of Ottawa.
You serve as the department’s specialist for major projects and are responsible and accountable for organizing, directing, coordinating and supervising the implementation of business and technology solutions. The projects are highly complex; of multi-million dollar value; may have a high profile with the public; are a departmental/corporate priority; may involve significant risk; are often composed of several sub-projects; and may extend over multiple years. These projects include major capital asset related projects, i.e., new capital asset acquisition and lifecycle projects; and other related complex, unique projects.
You provide consulting services to the department and the branch in the areas of project management, business analysis, process review, and the implementation of redesigned processes and new technology solutions/processes/applications needed to support or expand business operations for the Transportation Services Department.
You lead project teams through contracted service providers, consultants and/or assigned teams of staff. Under delegated authority, you are responsible for all phases of project delivery from project inception through tendering/consultant selection/award, assembling of project teams, project implementation, monitoring, tracking and reporting on project status, vetting all project expenditures, and presenting completed results. Once the capital project is complete, you are responsible for ongoing monitoring relative to lifecycle maintenance or for overseeing the transition/turnover to the operational support team.
You direct the implementation of project strategies and project work, and manage the financial and human resources related/assigned to the project. You also participate in the hiring of internal and external consultants by preparing the Request for Proposal and/or Statement of Work.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of 4 year university degree in Engineering, Architecture, Public Administration, Business Administration, Management Information Systems or related field which includes a concentration in project planning and management.
Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in the management of complex transportation-related projects, business analysis, and project/policy development, including directly related experience managing project human resources, including external consultants, and working with project budgets/financial processes.
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES
KNOWLEDGE
- Knowledge of the issues/principles involved in the provision of large IT projects, knowledge of transit operations and trends
- Will need to understand how various transit operating processes and customer/vehicle data collection systems/processes impact transit planning, transit operations, transit revenue, and client service processes
