Main Purpose and Function
The Building Worker position performs a full range of cleaning and minor maintenance tasks in, and around, civic buildings, with the goal of keeping buildings clean and maintained in a safe and healthy manner and notifies direct supervisor of the need for any building repairs and maintenance.
Key Contacts and Reporting Relationships
The position reports to either the Operations Supervisor, Working Supervisor or Building Services Supervisor and works within a team of Building Workers.
Specific Duties/Responsibilities
- Cleans spaces inside civic buildings; including but not limited to offices, meeting rooms, common spaces, bathrooms, kitchens, change rooms, steam rooms, gymnasiums, pre-schools
- Mops, washes, waxes and buffs floors and vacuums carpeted flooring
- Washes and sanitizes washroom floors, toilets, toilet seats, hand dryers and fixtures
- Cleans mirrors, windows, window coverings, and glass
- Washes walls, doors, hardware and glass
- Cleans public entrances and exits including but not limited to glass, doors and hardware
- Cleans exterior grounds, spaces, parking lots and stairways
- Cleans, washes and sanitizes drinking fountains, sinks and counters
- Refills soap dispensers, toilet paper, paper towel and other supplies
- Empties waste baskets, garbage cans, and recycling
- Empties Zero Waste Stations into appropriate bins
- Dusts furniture and fixtures
- Opens doors for regular operating hours, locks doors after operating hours and check to ensure that hazards are prevented
- Reports maintenance needs, damages and acts of vandalism to Supervisor
- Removes snow and ice from sidewalks, driveways and parking areas, using snow shovels and spreading ice melt/salt in areas
- Follows procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment, in order to prevent damage to buildings and facilities
- Maintains storage areas, cleaning equipment, materials and supplies in a safe and orderly manner
- Replaces light bulbs and fluorescent tubes and tags accordantly if ballast failure
- Sets up, arranges, and removes tables, chairs to prepare for events such as events and meetings
- Performs custodial and minor maintenance tasks including, but not limited to, replacing ceiling tiles, tightening loose door knobs, and unplugging toilets, sinks and drains
- Performs regularly scheduled deep cleaning tasks including, but not limited to, stripping, waxing and buffing floors, carpet cleaning and shampooing, power washing, high and low dusting, and cleaning blinds
- Performs regularly scheduled checks of emergency lights and fire extinguishers and reports on findings
- Provides information of building repairs and maintenance for Work Order to be approved by Supervisor
- Adheres to safety methods and procedures, departmental processes, and corporate policies
- Performs other related duties as required
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Education and Experience:
- Completion of a recognized certification program in building services work and some related experience
- Experience performing a variety of routine manual tasks in care, cleaning and general maintenance of buildings
- Experience operating and using janitorial tools, equipment and supplies
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Working knowledge of materials, tools, methods, safety practices and equipment used in janitorial and maintenance work
- Ability to arrange an effective work schedule under minimum direct instruction
- Good health and strength sufficient to perform a variety of routine manual tasks in care, cleaning and general maintenance of buildings
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety rules and regulations and understanding of utilizing WHMIS –MSDS
- Knowledge of qualities and uses of various cleaning, sanitizing, stripping and waxing compounds
- Basic knowledge of cleaning products and correct applications
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and procedures
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks

Main Purpose & Function
The Electrical Technician I will perform detailed technical work including designing, estimating, inspecting, providing technical reviews, ordering materials, developing project scope and coordinating projects related to City's electrical and communication infrastructure and within responsibilities of Traffic, Electrical Operations and Design – Electrical Design department.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Develop design solutions (street lighting, traffic signals, power distribution, communication systems etc.) that meet all applicable codes, standards and regulations.
- Conduct site surveys, inspections or technical investigations to collect data for engineering projects.
- Liaison with internal and external customers, other City divisions/departments, electricians, superintendents, civil crews, project coordinators/managers, consultants, various Business Improvement Associations and general public.
- Provide estimates for construction (labor and material) using in-house software.
- Perform development reviews (for off-site scope) and utilities reviews
- Perform night inspections and attend public meetings as required.
- Provide support for Organizational Quality Management (OQM) program compliance activities such as document control, quality control, process improvement and field reviews.
- Review work of draftspersons and other technicians.
- Perform other administrative and technical functions in support of engineering activities as required.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Completion of the twelfth school grade supplemented by either completion of electrical apprenticeship or recognized electrical technician courses/program.
- Considerable experience as an electrical designer or electrical technologist, electrician or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Experience in street lighting design and traffic signal design will be considered an asset.
- Knowledge of AutoCAD, AGI32, Word, Excel and ETAP is considered an asset.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), City of Vancouver Design Guidelines and Construction Standards, Master Municipal Construction Documents (MMCD), the International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) specifications and the Uniform Traffic Control Device (UTCD) standards, and the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) of North America standards and lighting simulation.
- Considerable knowledge of the principles and theory of electricity and electronics and their practical applications.

Minimum Position Requirements
Required Training, Certifications and Experience:

- Provides observations about facility, facility mechanical conditions and deficiencies and provides recommendations for enhancement and repair.
- Participates in and assists with facility-related projects.
Administration
- Participates in and assists with facility-related projects.
- Ensures the manner in which work is performed is in compliance with corporate and legislated policies, procedures, practices and guidelines related to environmental, health and safety, fire protection and any other applicable requirements.
- Maintains all assigned tools and arranges for repair and replacement where required
- Submits all expenditures on a timely basis.
- Other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
- College Diploma/Certification required
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience required as a licensed HVAC/Refrigeration Technician
- Strong ability to adhere and to properly execute processes and practices relating to facility operations and maintenance
- Ability to maintain building mechanical and other system troubleshooting and resolution skills
- Current knowledge of fire, life, safety and building codes and standards and ability to research and apply related codes and standards
- Possesses a strong environmental, health and safety mindset. Ability to perform work in a safe manner
- Strong client-service orientation along with a high sense of urgency
- Effective communication skills for the purpose of data relay, exchange, feedback, and clarification
- Mentoring skills required to support lower level technicians development
- Must be able and willing to work shifts, be available for on-call/standby and emergency call-outs as they arise
- Must be willing to wear Personal Protective Equipment
- Must meet enhanced security clearance requirements
- Valid drivers’ license
Licenses and/or Professional Accreditation
- Must hold a valid HVAC Certificate of Qualification issued by the province in which the work is performed. (e.g. 313A in Ontario)
- Gasfitter B, in addition to refrigeration license, is required
- Working towards Building Environment Systems (BES) Operation Class 1 an asset
- Facilities Technician Certification through an accredited institution, considered an asset
- Systems Maintenance Technician (SMT) considered an asset
