The West Health & Safety Business Partner is the strategic partner supporting Wolseley Canada’s Western region, leading the execution, support and strategic partnership of Wolseley’s health and safety program, reporting into the corporate Environment, Health & Safety team. The West Region Health & Safety Business Partner leverages strong health and safety knowledge, problem solving and communication skills to provide advice and guidance to leaders and staff on a broad set of safety related matters. As a Health & Safety leader this position assists other leaders at all levels in the organization with health and safety planning, program and activity implementation, policy interpretation and execution, safety performance, and training. As an expert in health and safety, this position will be required to participate in strategic support visits to locations across Canada.

What you will do:

  • Adopting the principles of continuous improvement, provide leadership, direction, and integration of the Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) management system to establish and maintain a strong safety culture.
  • Actively promote a healthy workplace that is free from workplace violence and harassment.
  • Work collaboratively with the Environment, Health and Safety team and with business partners, to drive an improvement in injury frequency.
  • Monitor trends in leading and lagging indicators, reporting, and communicating performance to business leaders.
  • Educate, consult with and influence management regarding unique safety requirements impacting their decisions, business unit operations, systems, and procedures.
  • Work directly with various levels of leadership to implement and maintain the EHS program.
  • Monitor, review and report health and safety performance indicators/measures
  • Evaluate, analyze, and provide suggestions for the improvement and enhancement of work processes, equipment, productivity, and cost containment.
  • Partner with stakeholders regarding incident investigations, ensuring accurate root cause analysis, identification of corrective action(s), and ensuring desired follow-ups are achieved.
  • Partner with stakeholders regarding workplace violence and harassment investigations, using investigation techniques to determine facts and complete reports based on findings.
  • Support the return-to-work program.
  • Support the Environment, Health and Safety audit process (identify safety hazards, non-compliance, provide recommendations/programs to mitigate gaps in compliance, etc.)
  • Ensure integration of health and safety measures into all new processes, equipment, and contract work.
  • Provide in depth guidance and support to managers to meet their accountabilities for the safety and health of their associates, customers, and the environment.
  • Act as a liaison between operations and regulatory bodies.
  • Develop best practice guidelines to enable proactive management of risk for the organization and supports the Internal Responsibility System.
  • Provide advice and consulting support to Managers and employees on HSE related matters to support continuous improvement.
  • Partner with Managers to diagnose HSE related issues and recommend solutions that drive desired change.
  • Contribute to the development and testing of emergency plans to support the region.
  • Develop and support processes that encourage employee participation in safety, leadership engagement and positive recognition to foster safe and healthy working environments.
  • Work with various stakeholders to contribute as a subject matter expert in relevant projects to advance business objectives and reduce harm to people, environment, and assets.
  • In partnership with the Learning and Development team, support the implementation of required Health and Safety training for managers, employees, and contractors, including the maintenance of company and regulatory records and files.
  • Other related duties and responsibilities as required or assigned.

 

What you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health & Safety, Science, Business, or related field
  • 5-7 years of progressive Health & Safety experience
  • Ability to travel 20-40%
  • Completion of or working toward the CRSP designation.
  • In-depth knowledge of Canadian OHS legislation
  • Experience with complex, matrix environment preferably global
  • Working experience and knowledge of Workday and associated business processes
  • Advanced skill level in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Power Point) required
  • Excellent Customer Service, interpersonal and leadership skills

Main Purpose and Function

The City Protective Services (CPS) Fire & Life Safety Advisor provides advice and operational management pertaining to the City’s internal Fire and Life Safety Program.  This includes audits to ensure all City assets are compliant with BC Fire Code and Building Code.  This position will provide on-site tactical planning with respect to fire safety plans, life safety equipment inspection programs, fire and life safety education and training, and internal fire prevention activities. The CPS Fire & Life Safety Advisor provides fire and life safety advice and expertise to City managers, and works with facility operational staff to ensure compliance with applicable legislation, codes, standards and best practices.

 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Advises a designated portfolio of business portfolios as assigned and acts as a backup for other portfolios when necessary.
  • Develops and oversees the implementation of fire and life safety programs/systems/approaches.
  • Works with managers and supervisors to develop appropriate and coordinated fire safety plans and responses by on-site personnel.
  • Advises managers and supervisors on practices, policies and duties required to be in compliance with Fire Code.
  • Provides consultation to City departments/programs regarding fire and life safety issues and requirements.
  • Works with Managers, supervisors and staff to develop Life Safety programs specific to leased properties, including roles and responsibilities.
  • In conjunction with Real Estate and Facilities Management, Planning and Development (Capital Project) ensures that appropriate equipment and fire safety plans are in place in leased facilities and that drills are conducted and staff educated to code in these facilities.
  • Works with the CPS Manager, Fire and Life Safety to develop policies and procedures to ensure City assets continue to be compliant.
  • Develops and maintains fire and life safety response protocols for on-site personnel.
  • Maintains records of all required fire and life safety activities. 
  • Develops and updates, as required, site specific fire safety plans for each directly managed facility.
  • Supports managers in the implementation of their departmental specific fire safety plan.
  • Interprets and maintains compliance standards in accordance with the BC Fire Code and BC building code and related regulations. 
  • Advises the monitoring stations of changes in the status of the building life safety systems impairments.
  • Coordinates Fire Watch activities during irregular operations related to building, life safety system outages and impairments.
  • Documents and ensures annual testing of fire alarm and building suppression systems through a trade qualified professional.
  • Coordinates training of the facility supervisory staff and other occupants in their responsibilities for fire safety and carrying out the fire emergency procedures described in the fire safety plan.
  • Identifies the need for, and leads or updates, risk assessments.
  • Analyzes and produces statistics and metrics related to  CPS fire and life safety.
  • Ensures fire drills are conducted in all directly managed facilities as per British Columbia Fire Code regulations. 
  • Ensures that designated staff complete weekly fire safety hazard checks and take immediate action to remedy.
  • Ensures that all portable fire extinguishers and hoses are inspected and maintained as required by regulations. 
  • Monitors designated personnel to ensure that they can function as a facility operational responder in fire alarm response. 
  • Supervise and coordinate subordinate staff and or work performed by a contracted service including making recommendations regarding the use of contracted services.
  • Acts as a liaison with Vancouver Fire Rescue Services. 
  • Establishes and fosters a “fire safety culture” within The City. 

 

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Post-secondary education in a related field (minimum 2-year diploma) or equivalent education and experience
  • Industry recognized professional certification in risk management, emergency management and/or fire and prevention is preferred 
  • Fire and life safety experience preferably in a corporate environment

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Considerable regulatory knowledge and demonstrated practical application of fire safety policies and programs.
  • Ability to develop and foster relationships and collaborate with client groups and colleagues
  • A broad based knowledge of principles and techniques related to fire safety planning
  • Ability to handle confidential and/or sensitive information with a high degree of discretion and impartially

You will be required to independently evaluate and provide first aid (e.g., for musculoskeletal injuries), advise Amazon Associates (AAs) on occupational and non-occupational injuries, have great verbal communication skills, be able to connect with AAs, as well as, Amazon Managers, within the limits of your professional code and training where applicable. You should enjoy learning and applying your knowledge about health & wellness to provide care for AAs on a daily basis. You will refer care to outside medical providers as needed, and learn about provincial and federal regulations and risk analysis. Practical ergonomics experience is advantageous. However, ergonomics topics will also be covered in ongoing training.

The OMR will function as a part of the larger team onsite, helping to provide assistance with all first aid needs and support operations as needed. This includes greeting all new hires for the site, either within a setting at New Hire Orientation or through one-on-one interaction. The OMR will also participate, as needed, in incident investigations and weekly case management review meetings.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Provide triage, prompt first aid within the scope of your training, and/or referral to outside medical providers, if indicated
- Minimize the AA risk of injury through awareness, education and proactive engagement
- Maintain all records of care provided to AAs
- Develop a first aid care plan for AAs recovering from an injury, focused on injury improvement, including self-care instructions as needed
- Manage the workers’ compensation and return to work process for AAs with work related injuries
- Provide daily activity logs and end of shift reports
- Spend frequent time on the warehouse floor to interact and engage with AAs and managers to coach on observed at-risk work habits
- Maintain a clean and orderly environment
- Monitor and ensure appropriate medical supply inventory is maintained
- Participate in special projects and ad hoc tasks as assigned
- Willing to be trained to teach First Aid/CPR/AED certification classes

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
