Job Type: The role will be based out of Leduc, Alberta and will entail Northern Alberta, Northwest Territories, Saskatchewan, and Northern British Columbia travel.
Shift Schedule: 5 days a week, 10 hour days, with the expectation to work weekends as needed.
The Heavy Duty Field Mechanic performs skilled tasks in the mechanical servicing, repair, and maintenance of KBL’s fleet of heavy equipment. The Heavy Duty Field Mechanic will have the ability to troubleshoot major and minor mechanical problems, as well as repair and adjust all necessary mechanical components and maintain detailed records.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Services on equipment:
- Work with Equipment manager to schedule required servicing to maximize efficiency and minimize downtime
- Inspecting and diagnosing problems with heavy Equipment
- Complete necessary repairs and required maintenance as per the scheduled servicing
- Conducting preventative maintenance to ensure the safe operation of Equipment
- Accurate and timely completion of work orders, including time and parts per repair
- Collaborating with other mechanics and technicians to solve complex problems
- Have experience with excavators/dozers/Haul trucks/loaders on operations and maintenance
- Have computer skills to utilize equipment management programs and for completing equipment repair and maintenance logs
- Parts ordering with support from Parts department manager
- Drive Company service truck into Difficult to access locations
- Plan and prep for remote repairs
Hot work:
- Welding nonstructural and non-frame components on equipment
- Grinding and cutting with grinder
- Oxy acetylene torch use
- General metal working
Keeping the service truck and equipment clean:
- Task housekeeping work to apprentices and labourers
- Keep tools clean and stored when not in use
- Ensure parts are where they should be
- Assist Coordinator with parts and inventory management
Health and Safety:
- Adhere to Health and Safety Management System, be familiar with and follow all applicable safe work practices, safe operating procedures, and safety specifications detailed in equipment manuals and manufacturer’s specifications
- Ensure that those persons assisting in the shop are also following applicable safe work standards
- Communicate any unsafe conditions or incidents and near misses to the Logistics Coordinator in a timely manner
Qualifications:
- Minimum 5 years’ experience working on Heavy Equipment
- Familiar with cat/John Deere/Komatsu/Volvo is considered an asset
- Possession of valid Driver’s License and clean Driver’s Abstract
- Small crane training
- Strong communication skills
- Knowledge in inventory management
- Self-motivator willing to work overtime if needed
Physical Requirements:
This position requires standing for extended periods, in addition to walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling with occasional sitting. Must be capable of heavy lifting and moving parts up to 75 lbs on a consistent basis.
Working Environment:
This job will require some overtime hours. Some work is completed in our facilities in Leduc and Edmonton however travel will be required to complete roadside repairs in all weather conditions. The noise level in the environment can be excessive and shop staff can be exposed to high temperatures, fumes, and toxic chemicals. Travel to NWT/Yukon will be required from time to time

What will you do?

- Contribute to ongoing workflow processes by entering detailed data and information into a computerized fleet management system to record job times, work performed and maintenance history
- Follow approved methods and techniques as set out in the manufacturer's manual and shop and engineering instructions
- Work within the standard job times for routine work
- Perform basic and complex diagnosis of systems through the use of diagnostic scanning tools, computer software and traditional methods
- Lubricate vehicles and/or ensure lubrication is carried out as required

- Prepare/review daily reports of program progress and to verify payment quantities
- Oversee and coordinate any required hired equipment and CoE manpower to assist contracted work where necessary to meet program requirements
