IMPACT Associate Public Works Full-time Job

An IMPACT Associate can support tradespersons, supervisors, managers, equipment operators or administrative teams in various areas. Areas of interest can include water & sewer utilities, roads and concrete construction, residential waste collection and street cleaning, working alongside project coordinators and technicians in traffic signals or SCADA.

 

An IMPACT Associate will attend safety meetings, site inspections, contractor meetings, pre-construction, and any other related meetings. They will also participate in the development or completion of related documentation.

 

POSITION FUNCTION

As an IMPACT Initiative Associate hired under the City of Victoria’s Inclusive Municipal Program for Advancing Careers and Training, you will be given meaningful and challenging assignments while being introduced to a career in municipal government. In this Associate position, you will assist with projects within a specific City department, contribute to the overall goals of the work unit, have job shadowing opportunities, and participate in educational experiences.

  

KEY DUTIES

  • Collaborate closely and actively participate in feedback sessions with a supervisor to contribute to the continuous improvement of the organization's operations.
  • Utilize tools and software platforms under the direct guidance of your supervisor.
  • Participate actively in the development and enhancement of projects aligned with the department's strategic goals.
  • Provide valuable field and/or office support to support the successful execution of assigned projects.
  • Collaborate with team members to facilitate shared learning and contribute to the evaluation and implementation of innovative solutions. Maintain detailed records of your work process, including any challenges encountered and problem-solving approaches employed.
  • Collaborate with colleagues from different departments or teams on cross-functional projects to gain a broader perspective and develop a well-rounded skill set supporting your knowledge and success in a municipal career.
  • Attend and actively participate in educational activities that enhance your knowledge and skills, aligning with IMPACT program objectives and the department's needs.

  • Work is assigned by supervisor and reviewed upon completion.

Main Purpose and Function
The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation is accepting applications from qualified individuals to be added to a pool of Building Workers (BW) to join our Community Centres and Mobile Parks auxiliary teams. This role will provide qualified candidates an opportunity to work in and across a diverse portfolio of facilities and spaces in the City. Qualified candidates will be assessed on the basis of their skills, knowledge and abilities, and may be selected for an interview should they meet the qualifications and requirements of the position and a vacant opportunity exists. 

 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

We are hiring auxiliary staff for two teams within the Park Board, our Community Centres and our Mobile Parks Teams.

 

Building Worker - Community Centres
The Building Worker is responsible for the enhancement of civic buildings by completing janitorial duties and minor maintenance. A key part of the role requires knowledge of standard cleaning methods and the ability to learn new and effective methods to ensure the cleanliness of the facilities. The Building Worker is responsible for performing a variety of heavy cleaning tasks including stripping and waxing floors, cleaning windows, cleaning washrooms, showers and change rooms, carpet cleaning, emptying garbage, minor maintenance repairs and other related duties as required.

 

Building Worker - Mobile Parks

The Mobile Parks Building Worker will provide janitorial services for the citywide inventory of public bathrooms and change rooms in parks. The Building Worker must also be able to operate a vehicle on a daily basis in a safe and efficient manner. Duties include, but are not limited to: opening, stocking, spot and deep cleaning, and locking facilities.

 

The successful candidate must be able to work a variety of shifts including mornings, afternoons, evenings, overnights and on weekends. 

 

Qualifications
Education and Experience:

  • Completion of a recognized certification program in building services work and some related experience.
  • Experience performing a variety of routine manual tasks in care, cleaning and general maintenance of buildings.
  • Experience operating and using janitorial tools, equipment and supplies.
  • WHMIS is preferred.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of materials, methods, safety practices and simple equipment used in janitorial and maintenance work.
  • Ability to arrange an effective work schedule under minimum direct instruction.
  • Good health and strength sufficient to perform a variety of routine manual tasks in care, cleaning and general maintenance of buildings.
  • Skill in the use of heavy cleaning equipment.

 

Driver License and Record Checks: 

  • A current and valid class 5 BC Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record is required for the Mobile Parks Team, but not for the Community Centres Team

Job Details

Main Purpose & Function 
The Automotive Service Worker (Police) requires the incumbent to perform semi-skilled servicing and repair work on a variety of Police and City fleet including equipment.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

The Automotive Service Worker performs servicing, minor repairs, and fueling either in the shop or in the field as instructed. Other duties include cleaning of the shop, vehicles, equipment and car wash as directed and all other related duties. Fleet and Manufacturing Services personnel are responsible for entering real time data into Fleet and Manufacturing Services' electronic fleet management system to track fleet maintenance. After initial instructions, oral or written, from the supervisor, work is to be performed in accordance with prescribed schedules and subject to a quality review and conformance to established standards.

 

The successful candidates must be able to work an 8-hour shift, which includes a paid meal break during which time the employee shall remain on duty. The current hours of work are from 6:30 AM to 2:30 PM, Thursday to Monday. This position requires the flexibility to work shift work, including weekend days, afternoons and graveyard shifts. The successful candidates may be required to adjust shifts and locations as operationally required.

 

Enhanced security clearance is a requirement of this position. Functional and or physical assessment related to the bona fide position requirements may be required.

 

 

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 10 is required.
  • Completion of a recognized pre-apprenticeship training course in a mechanic related trade would be an asset.

 

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Some knowledge of the hazards and proper safety aspects of the vehicle maintenance and servicing.
  • Thorough knowledge of braking systems.
  • Some knowledge in the use and care of the tools, materials, and equipment used in vehicle maintenance and servicing.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Agility, muscular coordination and sufficient strength to permit the performance of heavy manual labour.

 

Driver’s License and Record Checks:

  • Enhanced security clearance is a requirement of this position. A clearance requires the absence of any criminal charges or convictions related to this position.
  • A current and valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License or higher and a Satisfactory National Safety Code driving record
    • 5 years accumulation of no more than 9 points, not in excess of 3 points per single year
    • 3 years accumulation of no more than 1 preventable work related driving or equipment operating accident in any single year
    • Employees who do not demonstrate a satisfactory driving record will have their application reviewed in more detail
