IMPACT Associate Public Works Full-time Job

The position will support improvement of the Public Works operation. An IMPACT Associate will use existing tools, processes such as Microsoft 365, CAD and other software. They will also analyse engineering plans, utility information sheets and grade sheets.

 

Public Works is made up 6 sections:

Civic Service

  • Street cleaning
  • Residential waste collection

Administrative Services

  • Data entry
  • Ordering materials and supplies
  • Responding to inquiries

Underground Utilities

  • Delivery of water, sewer, and stormwater projects

Surface Infrastructure

  • Road marking
  • Carpentry
  • Sign manufacturing.
  • Painting

Fleet, Fabrication and Small Tools Shops

  • Automotive and heavy-duty repairs
  • Metal fabrication and repairs
  • Small tool supply and repair.

Street Operations

  • Road maintenance and construction
  • Sidewalk maintenance and construction
  • Streetlight and traffic signal construction and repair
  • Outdoor Electrical repair and inspections

 

An IMPACT Associate can support tradespersons, supervisors, managers, equipment operators or administrative teams in various areas. Areas of interest can include water & sewer utilities, roads and concrete construction, residential waste collection and street cleaning, working alongside project coordinators and technicians in traffic signals or SCADA.

 

An IMPACT Associate will attend safety meetings, site inspections, contractor meetings, pre-construction, and any other related meetings. They will also participate in the development or completion of related documentation.

 

POSITION FUNCTION

As an IMPACT Initiative Associate hired under the City of Victoria’s Inclusive Municipal Program for Advancing Careers and Training, you will be given meaningful and challenging assignments while being introduced to a career in municipal government. In this Associate position, you will assist with projects within a specific City department, contribute to the overall goals of the work unit, have job shadowing opportunities, and participate in educational experiences.

  

KEY DUTIES

  • Collaborate closely and actively participate in feedback sessions with a supervisor to contribute to the continuous improvement of the organization's operations.
  • Utilize tools and software platforms under the direct guidance of your supervisor.
  • Participate actively in the development and enhancement of projects aligned with the department's strategic goals.
  • Provide valuable field and/or office support to support the successful execution of assigned projects.
  • Collaborate with team members to facilitate shared learning and contribute to the evaluation and implementation of innovative solutions. Maintain detailed records of your work process, including any challenges encountered and problem-solving approaches employed.
  • Collaborate with colleagues from different departments or teams on cross-functional projects to gain a broader perspective and develop a well-rounded skill set supporting your knowledge and success in a municipal career.
  • Attend and actively participate in educational activities that enhance your knowledge and skills, aligning with IMPACT program objectives and the department's needs.

 

INDEPENDENCE

  • Work is assigned by supervisor and reviewed upon completion.
  • Problems are referred to supervisor.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Effort:

  • Sit with arms unsupported while keyboarding. (occasional)

Mental Effort:

  • Meet multiple deadlines. (occasional)

Visual/Auditory Effort:

  • Focus on a variety of source data and computer for short periods. (occasional)

Work Environment:

  • Office, may attend work sites. (occasional)

Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:

  • IMPACT Initiative Associates require at least 6 months of fundamental knowledge and practical experience related to tasks and responsibilities similar to those outlined in the position or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

We have an opportunity for a Traffic Control Person (TCP) to join our team in Victoria, BC.

 

With Scansa's industry-leading training and mentorship, some of your key responsibilities will include:

• Setting up and executing effective traffic management plans

• Controlling traffic flow through construction zones, while following all regulatory guidelines

• Ensuring the health & safety of everyone working on the construction project, as well as the public

• Giving precise traffic control hand signals and directions to prevent any miscommunications

• Directing and monitoring traffic to ensure that it is moving safely and efficiently through the construction zone

• Communicating with construction workers and other personnel to coordinate traffic control efforts

• Assisting pedestrians in crossing the street safely

• Responding to emergencies and incidents as needed

• Adhering to all relevant traffic laws and regulations

 

About You

 

To qualify, you must possess a valid Traffic Control Person (TCP) certification, from BC Construction Safety Association (BCCSA). We also require a valid Class 5 BC Driver's License. Previous experience within the construction industry is an asset.
