Solid Waste Collection Operator (DZ Licence Required) Temporary Job

Join the award-winning Toronto Public Service as Solid Waste Collection Operator within our Solid Waste Management Services Division.
Major Responsibilities:
- Operates a wide variety of collection vehicles and equipment independently or with a crew member.
- Moves carts/bags to the truck and uses appropriate mechanisms to dump or manually lift onto the truck.
- Operates mechanical equipment attached to vehicles/equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
- Lifts and loads garbage, recyclable materials, organics, organic yard waste and special pick up items such as household appliances, discarded furniture, wood, carpet and electronics.
- Places empty carts and containers back to the set out location in a tidy manner.
- Assists operator by signaling vehicle which is being maneuvered or backed up when on a two person crew.
- Drives vehicle to designated disposal facilities and unloads all materials in accordance with requirements of facility operator.
- Performs Daily Pre-Trip Inspection Report (Circle Check); identifies and reports vehicle and equipment malfunctions; maintains vehicle and equipment in a clean and tidy condition.
- Completes reports (e.g., Driver’s Collision/Incident Report) related to assigned duties and responsibilities.
- Operates 2-way radio or mobile phone.
- Performs other duties at this wage grade level or lower such as labouring type duties, maintenance and cleaning activities when not operating assigned vehicle or equipment.
- Performs work in a safe, efficient and courteous manner.
Key Qualifications:
Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:
- Must possess and maintain a valid Province of Ontario, Class “D” Driver’s License with “Z” endorsement and must qualify for the City’s equipment operating permits and requirements.
- Must be familiar with requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations for the safe performance of his/her duties and responsibilities or capable of obtaining familiarity of same.
- Must possess and be able to maintain as appropriate, any valid Province of Ontario requirements to operate mechanized equipment.
You must also have:
- Good driving record and familiarity with location of major city streets.
- May be required to do shift work in conformance with the Collective Agreement.
- Ability to use or learn to use various technical devices related to the position.
- Ability to deal courteously with the public.
- Ability to communicate in relation to their job duties.

What will you be doing?
- Educate the public about available services and proper use of the recycling depots
- Help control traffic and maintain the recycling depot site to ensure staff/customer safety and site cleanliness

- Drive to and from various Recycle Depots throughout the day on designated routes
- Remove all items not suitable as recycling material, including small and large items
- Keep the site and surrounding area free of litter to ensure the site is aesthetically acceptable to local businesses and residences
- Participate in high volume Big Bin events, including setting up and breaking down the event and educating, assisting and directing the public
- Perform other related duties as required
Work Environment: Repetitive physically strenuous work in all kinds of weather, including shoveling snow, lifting heavy items and driving for prolonged periods.
Qualifications
Qualifications Required at the Time of Application:
- Completion of Grade 10 or equivalent
Assets:
- Professional driving experience is an asset
- Experience operating the equipment used in this position, such as cube vans, skid steers and pickup trucks is an asset
- Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with the public in a customer service capacity. Previous experience working in a customer service capacity is an asset

- Ability to handle hazardous material properly; knowledge of household hazardous waste handling is an asset

- Collect recyclables and refuse from citywide Recycle Depots, Eco Stations, City Facilities, and Residential Customers, and deliver these materials to appropriate markets and disposal locations
- Ensure all scheduled collections are completed on time and coordinate delivery with marketplaces as part of the Waste Drop-Off team
- Select the most efficient routes for travel to and from work areas and disposal locations
- Record materials collected, weights, times and locations of pickups on the daily progress sheet
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections, follow regularly scheduled maintenance and report defects on collection vehicles
- Answer questions and/or complaints from the public concerning the recycling depot program
- Maintain a clean and sanitary collection vehicle, including cleaning hoppers and traps daily
- Maintain a positive customer service attitude and adhere to all work, safety and environmental regulations/procedures
Work Environment: Extended periods of driving in all weather conditions. Physically strenuous labour is required when loading and unloading roll-off bins and cleaning material from around recycling depot bins.
Qualifications
- Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by some truck driving experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience, including 1 year of experience driving vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight of 14,000 kilograms or greater
- 5 years of experience working in Waste Services, Collection Services
- 3 years of experience driving PendPac and Roll-Off Trucks
Assets:
- Knowledge of policies, procedures and Bylaws related to the City's Recycle Depot program
- Defensive Driving Course, current First Aid Certificate
Skills Required for Success:
- Ability to manipulate hydraulic bin-handling controls to minimize damage to bins and avoid overhead hazards at collection sites
- Physical ability and manual dexterity to perform the duties of this class including driving for prolonged periods (up to 10 hours per day), heavy manual labour in adverse weather conditions, including the ability to load recycling, refuse and bin containers
- Ability to complete progress reports, interpret and follow maps, and understand, execute and prepare oral and written instructions
- Good interpersonal skills to work well with other City employees and members of your team, and to communicate respectfully with the public
- Knowledge of appropriate material handling practices to avoid skin and eye contamination, cuts, slipping and associated mishaps
- Demonstrated ability to work in a fully integrated manner across the Department/Branch/Section

Conditions of Employment:
- Valid Alberta Class 3 driver’s license with Air Brakes Endorsement (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
- Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, Sunday - Saturday
