Examples of what you can expect to learn in the Tech III level (does not include all areas/responsibilities).

Mechanical

  • Understand power transmission concepts, such as gear ratios, service factor, horsepower and frame size to repair/replace a failed gearbox and/or motor when the correct replacement parts are not available
  • Understand mechanical design concepts to be able to replace failed pulleys and bearings with replacements that don’t match design without impacting performance of a conveyor (speed, torque, etc.)
  • Can read, interpret and create or modify mechanical drawings

Electrical

  • Use a digital multimeter to resistance test de-energized circuits.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose both the power and the control branch of motor controls circuits.
  • Read, interpret and create or modify electrical drawings/schematics

 

PLC/Controls

  • Go online with PLC processors to aid in troubleshooting
  • Burn EEPROMs
  • Understand PLC networks, such as ControlNet, DeviceNet, etc.

 

Welding or Fabrication

  • MIG, stick and TIG weld in all positions.
  • Understand difference between structural and non-structural welds and when to apply them
  • Repair broken components where factors such as position or load may impact the repair, such as motor mounting plates or conveyor legs.
  • Use vertical mill/drill and other machining tools

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Certificates in Industrial Maintenance/Mechatronics, electrical or mechanical trade or related area and an associate degree in a related area preferred.

 

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE

  • Four (4) years experience in Industrial Maintenance with proficiency in knowledge and demonstrated skills in mechanical power transmission, electrical and working knowledge of PLC/Controls and welding/fabrication skills through job experience, related military experience and/or related education required.
  • Multiple certificates and degrees may be assessed by manager and HR to determine relevancy to minimum qualifications and experience

Major Responsibilities:

 

At Toronto Water, Electrical Instrumentation Control Technicians (EICTs) ensure the optimal performance of electrical/electronic instrumentation equipment, control devices and systems in various infrastructure sites throughout the city. They also work with advanced water systems to help provide clean, safe drinking water for Toronto residents and businesses or with advanced wastewater treatment systems to help protect public health and safety. EICTs are also responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of equipment.

 

  • Performs skilled trade work and is responsible for electrical, electronic instrumentation equipment and control system overhauling, installation and maintenance of all processes in advanced Toronto Water facilities.
  • Inspects, tests, records, monitors, and performs analysis, evaluation, selection, integration, installation and maintenance on electrical, electronic and instrumentation control devices and systems used in major Water/Wastewater facilities and ensures compliance to all regulatory requirements and procedures.
  • Utilizes process operations, sampling and laboratory analysis results to interpret equipment performance. Performs laboratory tests, checks and calibration as required.
  • Utilizes a number of different computerized software systems, such as Process Control System (PCS) involving a SCADA-based system as well as a Performance and Operations Management System (POMS), a Work Management System (WMS), a Statistical Process Control (SPC), a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), and other related technology.
  • Makes timely decisions and addresses/responds to alarm conditions and emergencies.
  • Provides, updates and maintains the required documentation of all work area electrical maintenance activities.
  • Initiates and expedites material purchase orders, issues tracking and payment documents receives materials, maintains inventories and records using computerized systems.
  • Trains, assists and supports skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled staff as required. Fosters and supports a team environment.
  • Assists in the maintenance and cleaning of work areas.

 

Key Qualifications:

 

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

 

  1. Must be licensed in the Province of Ontario as an Electrician Construction and Maintenance (Licence 309A, Ontario College of Trades and Apprenticeship Act (OCTAA), 2009) or as an Industrial Electrician (Licence 442A, OCTAA, 2009). All Electrical Licences (309A or 442A) must be registered, valid and maintained with Skilled Trades Ontario (STO). Applicant name must match licence.
  2. Experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of equipment for the generation and distribution of electrical energy at different voltages in an industrial environment. 
  3. Completed program in Industrial Electronics/Instrumentations or equivalent practical experience in maintenance and calibration of process instruments and analyzers.
  4. Experience in the utilization of computers, various software programs and applications, and the ability to make necessary calculations and interpret data.
  5. Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario Class “G” licence and qualify for the City’s equipment operating permits and requirements, as determined by work location.

 

You must also have:

 

  • Must obtain through examination by an agency recognized by the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MOECP), a valid Class 1 Operators Licence/Certificate in the appropriate discipline as per the applicable legislation within 90 days from employment start date. Should the incumbent be employed without holding any Operator Certification/Licence or an Operator-in-Training (OIT) Licence, they will be required to write and pass the Level 1 certification exam in the appropriate discipline within 90 days from their respective start date in this position.
  • Knowledge of the maintenance, repair and troubleshooting of programmable controllers, remote terminal units and data communications circuits, pneumatic and hydraulic instrumentation.
  • Understanding of the standard methods, technology, materials and tools used in Eelectrical/electronic/instrumentation control principles.
  • Must be familiar with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, environmental legislation and the policies, procedures and regulations that apply to this work and have practical knowledge and be conversant with the current Ontario Electrical Safety Code and its practices.
  • Ability to read, interpret and prepare layouts, diagrams, schematics and manuals.

Employees in this program shall receive the rates of pay applicable to the training rates for the EICT classification set out below:

Reporting to the Manager, Maintenance Control, this position supports MOC, Cabin MOC and Technical Support for all administrative requirements. This position provides data entry support for TRAX data entry (Defects), enabling positive control and on time performance. This position also supports third party and internal technicians on TRAX functionality and Air Canada processes, as well as third party line maintenance contractors with their required data entry.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide central point for Line Maintenance on a 24 hour around- basis for TRAX data entry (Defects) support.  
  • Liaise with other Third-party technicians, internal departments, along with internal personnel as required to support TRAX update.
  • Maintaining up to date Training profile and TRAX & Aircraft Defect Handling processes.
  • Operational support for TRAX data entry (Defects), enabling positive control and on time performance.
  • Liaise with internal Air Canada departments (receiving inspection, AOG, Stores, etc.) to enable positive control and on time performance.
  • Provide administrative functions in Maintenance Operations Control to enable technical dispatch. 
  • This position will provide assistance by supporting the Manager, MOC in the non-technical, administrative and transactional activities associated with MOC, Cabin MOC and Technical Support.
  • Provide routine Defect update performance reporting, as well as ad hoc reports required to support the business.
  • Liase with MOC Management to proactively respond to MOC staffing administrative requirements.
  • Act as point of with employees for schedules/ change notifications.
  • Responsible for the completion and accuracy of MOC employee time exceptions and to liaise with eservices to communicate employee status and schedules.
  • Provide accurate and updated schedule changes information to MOC Management.
  • Support the Managers with employee schedule development and identification of anticipated staffing issues and canvassing for overtime.
  • Administrative support for AOG booking related to hotel booking, AOG bookings and reconciling invoices. 
  • Working with software tools this position will track and report out on MOC employee training status as well as departmental and branch training compliance.

Qualifications

  • College diploma, professional degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Proven knowledge of TRAX, for example but not limited to: Part transactions, Defect deferral, and GMM TRAX requirements.
  • Knowledge of TRAX & Aircraft Defect Handling is a definite asset.
  • Proficiency with PC (Word, Excel, MS Outlook) is a definite asset.
  • Ability to shift focus given changing priorities and time constraints.
  • Willingness to work shifts and at times extended hours. 
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and ability for teamwork. 
  • Detailed oriented.
  • Excellent English communication skills both (oral & written). 
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision.

•    Able to work at heights up to 45 feet, to stand for long periods with occasional laying, stooping and crouching and frequent heavy lifting up to 50 lbs.
•    Background or experience in electrical systems or electronics and demonstrated experience in vehicle repair and troubleshooting is an asset
