The Technician IV holds a provincially issued Certificate of Qualification in which the work will be performed and has passed any required exams. His mandate is to manage the facility's systems, perform preventive maintenance work and provide routine and on-demand services on the mechanical and electrical equipment and systems of the assigned facilities, according to company policies and professional certification requirements. The Technician IV is also responsible for performing work according to defined practices and procedures and meeting internal and external requirements, including environmental, health and safety, and fire safety requirements.

At this position level:

  • Performs preventative and corrective maintenance on facility mechanical and electrical equipment and system

Trades certification or license in one or more of the following is required:

  • Journeyman level HVAC/Refrigeration license
  • Journeyman level Electrical license
  • Journeyman level Plumbing license

In addition to one of the above requirements, the following are considered assets:

  • Journeyman level Sprinkler Fitters license is an asset
  • Registered as Fire Protection Technician (RFPT) is an asset
  • Gasfitter I & II license is an asset

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Subject to legislative licensing requirements and company policy:

  • Performs work in accordance to established processes and practices
  • Complies with all internal and external requirements including but not limited to environmental, health and safety, fire protection
  • Performs regular facility, facility mechanical and electrical equipment and systems monitoring and inspection, preventative and corrective maintenance to ensure facility uptime objectives are met, uninterrupted client operation and asset integrity of assigned facility are maintained.
  • Provides observations about facility, facility mechanical and electrical equipment and systems conditions and deficiencies and provides suggestions for enhancement and repair.
  • Monitors assigned facility by conducting facility walkthroughs, mechanical and electrical equipment and system monitoring and inspection
  • Maintains, troubleshoots and repairs mechanical and electrical building systems and equipment
  • Responds to routine and on-demand service requests and performs preventative and corrective maintenance on facility mechanical and electrical equipment and systems
  • Records resolution data within service maintenance management database. Ensures work completed meets quality, contract response and all other requirements
  • Receives, tracks, monitors and reports status of maintenance and repair work within service maintenance management database. Initiates documents to obtain formal approval of work required.
  • Assists in the implementation of preventative maintenance (PM) program. Ensures that deficiencies are identified, recorded and escalated, and that related documentations are maintained.
  • Participates in and assists with facility-related projects.
  • Ensures the manner in which work is performed is in compliance with corporate and legislated policies, procedures, practices and guidelines related to environmental, health and safety, fire protection and any other applicable requirements.
  • Maintains all assigned tools and arranges for repair and replacement where required.
  • Submits all expenditures on a timely basis
  • Assists in enhancing tenant and customer satisfaction and maintaining positive relations through manner in which work is performed and services delivered.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Requirements

  • Must be able and willing to work shifts, be available for on-call/standby and emergency call-outs as they arise.
  • Must be willing to wear personal protective equipment

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  • More than 3 years up to 5 years of facility operations and maintenance work experience
  • High school diploma plus trades training, certification or licensing
  • Strong ability to adhere and to properly execute processes and practices relating to facility operations and maintenance
  • Ability to maintain, troubleshoot and repair mechanical and electrical building systems and equipment
  • Strong building mechanical and electrical equipment and system troubleshooting and resolution skills
  • Current knowledge of fire, life, safety and building codes and standards and ability to research and apply related codes and standards
  • Possesses a strong environmental, health and safety mindset. Strong ability to perform work in a safe manner
  • Strong client-service orientation along with a high sense of urgency
  • Effective communication skills for the purpose of data relay, exchange, feedback, and clarification

Licenses and/or Professional Accreditation

  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license, and clean driver’s abstract.

This is a regular, full-time position with a salary range of $31.88 - $37.50 per hour. The starting salary will be based on the successful candidate’s competencies, including but not limited to experience, education and performance related to this role.

The Arboriculture Technician is responsible for preserving and protecting the urban forest by performing specialized technical support work for the Urban Forestry department. The Arboriculture Technician represents the Urban Forestry profession and the interests of Vancouver’s urban forest to other City Departments, levels of government, the development community, and the general public. The Arboriculture Technician will put forth contemporary arboricultural strategies and best practices in keeping with up-to-date science and research.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities 
The Arboriculture Technician plans and implements strategies to ensure quality tree planting programs. Related tasks include the administration of large planting programs in conjunction with street and development projects, and public tree stewardship events. This work will align with Vancouver’s canopy cover goal of 30% by 2050 and focus on under-represented neighbourhoods. The Arboriculture Technician is familiar with related City of Vancouver and Vancouver Park Board policies such as VanPlay to accomplish goals and strengthen the urban forest in a changing climate.  They also plan and implement tree management strategies and practices that improve the existing urban forest or its maintenance operations. The Arboriculture Technician is often the person to steward the introduction of new technologies and practices. The Arboriculture Technician will also make recommendations for improvements to methods and procedures in all aspects of Arboriculture operations and will provide technical advice to the senior staff of the Urban Forestry Department and Park Board. The Arboriculture Technician must have strong technical skills and independent judgment as they are expected to make reasonable recommendations supported by evidence on the outcome of urban forestry. This role will work collaboratively with outside departments to develop solution-oriented strategies that enhance the City of Vancouver’s urban forest.

 

Qualifications 
Education and Experience:

  • University graduation in a discipline applicable to urban forestry with preference for ISA Certified Arborist with TRAQ endorsement and some experience in the municipal arboriculture field, OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Considerable experience with the methods, materials, practices, tools and equipment as used currently in arboriculture.

 

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of Vancouver Urban Forest Strategy and the Van-Tree computer program;
  • Considerable knowledge of street tree planting procedures, species profiles and their performance in the local environment, and of the tree farm cultural practice and operations;

Main Purpose and Function

Specific Duties/Responsibilities

  • Operates services and maintains ice rink surfaces and refrigeration plants and related equipment
  • Scrapes, floods and paints lines, maintains ice surface in proper and safe conditions using the ice resurface, edging equipment and hosing methods
  • Changes and adjusts blade on ice resurfacing machine, inspection checks and records operating hours, machine and battery conditions 
  • Cleans, inspects and makes minor repairs on the rink board system
  • Inspects and assists in rink glass replacement process
  • Maintains rink dressing room cleanliness, inspects condition and records/reports to supervisor
  • Keeps ice rink and facility areas, walkways and equipment clean, serviced and safe
  • Maintains  daily records pertaining to the ice rink refrigeration operation and overall building
  • Performs and assists the Maintenance Technician in completing general maintenance and shut down and/or start up by following safety operating procedure on the refrigeration plant system
  • Connects, assists access for trades and contractors in completing building maintenance and service  
  • Reviews and monitors refrigeration plant maintenance activities to ensure compliance with BCSA – BC Safety Authority and Regulations 
  • Assists in reporting and preventing facility vandalism
  • Performs basic preventive maintenance and lubrication on pumps, motors and related equipment
  • Secures facilities and grounds for the purpose of minimizing property damage, loss and liability and ensuring safety at work site
  • Maintains a cooperative working relationship with those contacted in the course of work
  • Performs routine janitorial job functions and responsibilities
  • Cleans changing rooms and washrooms
  • Ensures proper labeling, dilution and use of all chemicals
  • Wears proper personal protective equipment at all times

  • Coordinates the work of janitorial team by assigning, scheduling and assessing the competition of work and tasks
  • Ensures quality control and best practices by inspecting work in progress and upon competition
  • May assist in completing monthly workplace inspections as required
  • May work independently with little or no supervision

Minimum Position Requirements

Required Training, Certifications and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 10; preferable supplemented by technical training related to the work plus some related experience; completion of a recognized program in building service work OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.  
  • Ice Facility Operator or Refrigeration Operator (5th class refrigeration) Certificate from the BC Safety Authority.
  • Valid driver’s license required – Drivers abstract

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • At least two (2) years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience related to the job description

Vancouver Fire Rescue Services EVT Mechanics work a four on four off schedule with a rotating on-call schedule to provide support for overnight mechanical breakdowns and respond to major incidents in the City of Vancouver. In recent years, VFRS mechanics have also responded alongside VFRS suppression fire fighters to the devastating wildfires throughout British Columbia.


REQUIREMENTS
