As a Painter I, you will prepare surfaces and apply protective and decorative coatings to buildings, furniture, equipment, machinery, etc. and paint signs.   • Prepare surfaces by washing, steaming, removing old finishes, smoothing surfaces and filling cracks, nicks and holes 
  • Use of paint remover, blowtorch, sandblaster, wire brush, scraper as required to prepare surfaces 
  • Arrange and assemble ladders, scaffolding units, etc. and placing drop cloths to protect adjacent furniture, floors, etc. from splattering
  • Select or prepare paints or stains and apply to various surfaces using brush, roller or spray equipment 
  • Cover walls and ceilings with decorative wallpaper or natural or synthetic fibers 
  • Clean equipment and work areas 
  • Apply special protective coatings 
  • Guidance for apprentices when required

  • Abide by all Occupational Health and safety and Enviso regulations

Qualifications

  • Certified Alberta Journeyman in the trade of Painter and Decorator 
  • 5 years of experience in related field is an asset 
  • Considerable knowledge of the properties of paint, lacquer and related finishes, correct proportions and proper techniques for mixing, blending and applying paints or finishes to wood, metal or other materials 
  • Possess form perception to be able to observe application of coatings for proper thickness, smoothness, quality and detect imperfections
  • Possess spatial perception to be able to achieve proper spacing, balance and artistic effect when laying out and painting letters or designs
  • Color acuity of a high degree to mix paints to obtain desired color, or to match exact shade of original color 
  • Manual dexterity to use hand and power tools, to operate spraying machines and for precise and agile movements when painting letters on signs, applying trim, etc. 
  • Must be physically capable of performing the duties, specifically when dust, noise and various weather conditions exist

The Landscape Technician I with Urban Forestry is, in its simplest form, a passionate protector of the urban forest. In this role, you will lend your expertise in all things arboricultural to contractors, citizens and other work areas within the City of Edmonton to ensure compliance with City standards wherever the urban forest may be affected. You will succeed in this role if you can manage your time and tasks well, and have the ability to communicate and collaborate with a variety of different work units.

The Landscape Technicians hired will be responsible for supporting Forestry within its main working units - Planting, Pruning, Community, Projects. These working units are briefly summarized below:

Planting Forestry:

As a Landscape Technician hired into a role with the Planting Forestry team, you will assist with coordinating open space and boulevard tree planting,  overseeing contract tree work (may include tree watering, planting or other tree work), and supporting urban forestry in many other areas.

Pruning Forestry:

As a Landscape Technician hired into a role with the Pruning Forestry team, your position will focus on assisting the pruning team’s Landscape Technician II. Inspecting the quality of both in house and contract tree maintenance activities. Duties with this position will include responding to inquiries from citizens, overhead utility tree pruning conflicts, pruning inspections, stump grinding inspections and supporting other teams within urban forestry.

Community Forestry:

The Community Forestry team is focused on providing educational and engaging opportunities for Edmontonians to learn more about the benefits of the urban forest and to take part in stewardship activities and planting opportunities. This team also oversees the GIS tree inventory and condition assessment of Edmonton’s open space and boulevard tree inventory.

Project Forestry:

The Project team are primarily consultants for projects impacting City Trees. Through tree valuations, evaluations, construction projects and design reviews, Urban Forest Technicians provide expertise in working around trees from the design processes through to construction completion. This includes working with other groups to develop and implement construction plans to consider all tree protection/preservation requirements. This team administers the Corporate Tree Management Policy (C456C) and Public Tree Permit.

Each of these units oversees a variety of tasks, including the duties listed below. As an advocate of the urban forest, you will perform a mix of the following:

  • Collect data in the field, including tree measurements and assessments, required for potential projects that take place around trees
  • Assess tree condition and collect data on City trees in GIS software
  • Review landscape drawings and maps to determine tree ownership
  • Assist with various projects which may include recommendations and tree evaluations for monetary value
  • Coordinate contractor work to ensure compliance with City standards and agreements, while advising and/or resolving any discrepancies on the work
  • Conduct field inspections and assess the progress and completion of contracted tree work
  • Conduct tree assessment and gather information required for completing of police reports and claims
  • Ensure compliance with safety and ENVISO requirements
  • Assist with the administration of the Corporate Tree Management Policy (C456C) as outlined in its procedures, and track and report any damages to tree assets
  • Review tree protection plans as they relate to the Public Tree Permit
  • Review landscape plans to ensure arboriculture/landscaping best practices and standards are met
  • Respond to public complaints or inquiries, orally or in writing
  • Assist with creating educational and engaging content for social media posts, webpages, and workshops
  • Assist with delivering educational presentations to a wide variety of demographics to promote the benefits of the urban forest
  • Assist with facilitating community-driven planting programs
  • Assist with the annual tree health and inventory assessment
  • Perform related work, as required

Qualifications

  • Completion of a 2 year technology diploma with an arboricultural emphasis or a related field, including the ability to identify and assess local tree species
  • 2 years experience in the landscaping industry
  • Knowledge of arboricultural techniques and practices
  • Knowledge of methods and standards common to the specifications of contract implementation
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, including the ability to effectively deal with the public
  • Ability to communicate professionally, both verbally and in writing

Duties included are, but not limited to: 

  • Operation of power tools, hand tools, and small equipment, ie - chainsaws, tampers, mowers, jackhammers, blower packs, generators,etc.
  • Construction, repair, and cleaning of facilities such as street furniture, fences, etc.
  • Maintain park trails and shared use paths walking trails 
  • Shovel and chip ice from sidewalks and manually sand icy areas 
  • Use equipment such as, but not limited to BCS brooms and small John Deere tractors to remove snow and debris from hard surfaces
  • Clean and sweep debris from boulevards and hard surfaces manually, with hand tools or small equipment as required
  • Load and unload material from truck to work site and vice versa 
  • Assist concrete crew with the placement of concrete 
  • Assist asphalt crew with the placement of asphaltic material (cold mix - hot mix) 
  • Assist litter crews in refuse collection 
  • Assist brick crew with the placement of brick on walkways, sidewalks, crosswalks, roadways, etc. 
  • Assist with flagging procedures when required 
  • Assist with manual and non-manual sweeping / cleaning of city owned facilities and infrastructure 
  • Assist with brushing crew when required Assists in the maintenance of wooden sidewalks, steps, fences and guardrails 
  • Assist with yard duties when required 
  • Erect temporary street signs 
  • Clear cut and burn brush Assists with digging holes and trenches
  • Operation of light delivery vehicles transporting material and supplies Performs other related duties as required 

Qualifications

  • Completion of the tenth (10th) school grade 
  • Good knowledge of the methods and practices used in operating and caring for equipment
  • Possession of a valid Class 5 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's License or operator's licensing equivalent recognized by the Operator Licensing and Vehicle Control Regulation, Alta. Reg. 320/2002 and eligibility to obtain a City driver's permit
  • The ability and knowledge to complete an equipment pre-trip inspection on correlating equipment required for the task
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labour for extended periods of time under various weather conditions 
  • Knowledge of the daily maintenance required on the equipment 
  • Knowledge of the PARS Operating Procedures and SOPs related to Active Pathways Snow Removal
  • Emergency First Aid Certificate
  • Physical capable of performing the duties assigned to the position class 
  • Exemplary customer service skills 
  • Ability to wear respiratory protection as required 
  • Ability to work and make decisions in an independent manner

What will you be doing?

  • Expertly operate a tandem PendPac/Roll-off or similar collection vehicle to collection sites and disposal points
  • Collect recyclables and refuse from citywide Recycle Depots, Eco Stations, City Facilities, and Residential Customers, and deliver these materials to appropriate markets and disposal locations
  • Ensure all scheduled collections are completed on time and coordinate delivery with marketplaces as part of the Waste Drop-Off team
  • Select the most efficient routes for travel to and from work areas and disposal locations
  • Record materials collected, weights, times and locations of pickups on the daily progress sheet
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections, follow regularly scheduled maintenance and report defects on collection vehicles
  • Answer questions and/or complaints from the public concerning the recycling depot program
  • Maintain a clean and sanitary collection vehicle, including cleaning hoppers and traps daily
  • Maintain a positive customer service attitude and adhere to all work, safety and environmental regulations/procedures

Work Environment: Extended periods of driving in all weather conditions. Physically strenuous labour is required when loading and unloading roll-off bins and cleaning material from around recycling depot bins.

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by some truck driving experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience, including 1 year of experience driving vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight of 14,000 kilograms or greater
  • 5 years of experience working in Waste Services, Collection Services
  • 3 years of experience driving PendPac and Roll-Off Trucks

Assets:

  • Knowledge of policies, procedures and Bylaws related to the City's Recycle Depot program
  • Defensive Driving Course, current First Aid Certificate

Skills Required for Success:

  • Ability to manipulate hydraulic bin-handling controls to minimize damage to bins and avoid overhead hazards at collection sites
  • Physical ability and manual dexterity to perform the duties of this class including driving for prolonged periods (up to 10 hours per day), heavy manual labour in adverse weather conditions, including the ability to load recycling, refuse and bin containers
  • Ability to complete progress reports, interpret and follow maps, and understand, execute and prepare oral and written instructions
  • Good interpersonal skills to work well with other City employees and members of your team, and to communicate respectfully with the public
  • Knowledge of appropriate material handling practices to avoid skin and eye contamination, cuts, slipping and associated mishaps

  • Assist Equipment Operator II's in chipping brush, stump grinding, forklift operation, delivery and hauling of various materials
  • Plant trees manually and mechanically, digging and transplanting trees, including shovelling soil, digging holes, pounding metal stakes into ground and installing and removing wire around trees
  • Operate and perform minor maintenance on equipment, which may include the use of chainsaws and various pruning tools
  • Drive vehicles city wide, including 2 ton dump trucks
  • General labour, including pulling out and carrying metal stakes, hand weeding around trees, cutting wire fencing around trees
  • Provide traffic control and direction including greeting the public and providing prompt and courteous service
  • Conduct job duties in a safe manner in compliance with City and Provincial Occupational Health and Safety Legislation regulations, codes, policies and competency training
  • Assist Arborists to develop and maintain normal tree health and structure

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 10
