Main Purpose and Function
The Engineering Assistant III is responsible for undertaking various duties related to the City of Vancouver’s role in planning and design of Rapid Transit projects including planning, design, research, analysis, technical, and administrative duties.  

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

• Under supervision of a senior engineer or senior planner, participate in the planning, design and implementation of projects of medium to high complexity related to Rapid Transit projects.
• Prepares research, technical studies, reports and presentations on topics of moderate complexity, including undertaking relevant field observations and notes and verifying the accuracy of the content.
• Under supervision of a senior engineer or senior planner, leads the development of conceptual geometric designs using AutoCAD, applying transportation planning and engineering principles to support the implementation of rapid transit projects.
• Internal and external communication to ensure that plans and designs are understood by other branches and stakeholders, and completed accordingly.
• Identifies data needs and performs moderately complex data analysis to support project decision making. Data sources include cycling and pedestrian volumes, demographics, vehicle volumes, transit ridership forecasting, ICBC collision records.
• Create maps, graphics, and presentations for public consultation and internal communication, including work with GIS software such as MapInfo or ArcGIS and graphic programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and PowerPoint.
• Organizes and sometimes leads meetings with internal and external stakeholders.
• Performs general administrative duties including data entry, taking meeting minutes, taking and organizing photos, and other administrative and/or clerical duties as required.
• Receives, organises and responds to public enquiries about transportation policies and active transportation projects.
• Other duties/responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:

• Completion of Grade 12 supplemented with post-secondary education in Civil Engineering technology, transportation or other relevant area of study, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Working knowledge of current transportation planning and engineering design principles and methods.
• Working knowledge of the City's transportation policies and networks, community planning process and land use
• Knowledge of the components of urban street design and an awareness of concepts such as Complete Streets and ability to apply related principles to conceptual designs.

Who you are:

Main Purpose & Function

The Structures team is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to join its asset management team to manage its portfolio of 45 bridges, 500 retaining walls, and other miscellaneous structures. This position will work closely with the Structures Section Head and lead a small team of engineers and support staff to work on the overarching bridge asset management strategy, short-, mid- and long-term asset management tasks, capital planning, emergency planning and response, managing external consultants (seismic assessments, rehabilitation design, and inspection programs), providing technical expertise to other branches and departments within the City, review of building developments for impacts to City infrastructure, and other tasks as required. The Senior Structural Engineer may also manage small construction projects related to the portfolio.

This position reports to the Structures Section Head in the Streets Design Branch and supervises a small team of professionals. The position also oversees and supports the work performed by Structural Engineers, Civil Engineers, Project Managers, Engineering Assistants, Planning Assistants, Data Specialists, and clerical staff either within the branch or cross departmentally when projects relate to Structures portfolio. 

The position works closely with a number of branches in Engineering, such as Street Operations, Development and Major Projects, Transportation, Green Infrastructure Implementation, Project Delivery Branch, and others. This position also works closely with other City Departments, such as Supply Chain Management, Legal, Parks, Real Estate and Facilities, and externally with various consultants, contractors, senior level partners, stakeholders, and clients.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Asset Management & Project Delivery:

• Develops strategic asset management and asset management plans for the bridge, seawall, retaining wall and slopes inventory.
• Manages the development and sustainment of comprehensive asset inspection programs.
• Develops, monitors and reports on key performance indicators pertaining to asset condition, and planned Capital maintenance, retrofit and rehabilitation.
• Maintains asset data and information through use of corporate systems, developed processes and procedures.
• Develops and manages capital maintenance programs to extend the service life of the bridge, seawall, retaining wall and slopes inventory and manages risks associated with each.

• Manages delivery of Level 1 and 2 projects/programs and the application of the departmental Quality Management System (QMS).
• Liaisons with Project Delivery Branch, external stakeholders, consultants and contractors to ensure successful project delivery.

Emergency Management and Response:

• Develops and oversees the Earthquake Response Plan (ERP).

Capital Planning:

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor's degree in Structural Engineering with a Professional Engineer designation and minimum of 8 years of experience in structural consulting, construction management, project or program management, and asset management or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

• Registration or eligibility for registration as a Professional Engineer in British Columbia.

Main Purpose and Function
The Civil Engineer I in the Sewers Design Branch provides engineering design, project management, contract management, and inspection services during the design and construction of sewer infrastructure projects, establishes sewers requirements for development proposals, and investigates sewer system and drainage problems.

• Completes cost effective storm and sanitary sewer infrastructure design for construction by City or private crews

Qualifications:

• Experience using mechanical design tools for static equipment (such as PV Elite, CAESAR II stress analysis, SagePlus, CodeCalc ) to support design verification and Fitness for Service (FFS) assessment

• Knowledge of materials engineering and risk-based work selection process considered assets  

• Support execution of equipment strategy work

• A valid driver's licence

Responsibilities: 

• Provide general mechanical engineering support relating to static equipment fitness for service (FFS) assessment, repair specifications, re-rate assessment, failure investigation, purchase specification, equipment strategies support etc. to site operating units

• Produce engineering packages with varying scope and complexity such as:

  • Repair packages (both emergency/routine maintenance, outage, and turnaround)

  • Upgrade packages following Management of Change (MOC) process, risk assessment / peer review, preparation of engineering drawings/sketches, updating data sheets, etc.

  • Purchase specifications for new and replacement pressure equipment.

  • Support fitness for service assessments such as minimum thickness calculations, re-rates, material alterations, fire damage assessment etc.

• Support shutdown scope development

• Work collaboratively with process, maintenance and technical personnel to resolve plant and system issues

• Conduct root cause failure analysis for static equipment

Location and other Key Details: 

• This position is located at Suncor Base plant location in Fort McMurray, Alberta

• Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs

• If you reside outside of Fort McMurray, relocation of your primary residence to within 60 km of Fort McMurray is mandatory. Relocation support will be provided

Group Summary:

• Work on the design, fabrication, installation, programming and try-out of new and modified equipment.
• Complete repairs in a timely and efficient manner as required.
• Evaluate the job to be done in relation to tools required and the extent of materials needed.
• Estimate the time required for each job.
• Read, interpret and/or alter electrical wiring diagrams as required.
• Troubleshoot electrical control problems.
• Carry out any preventative maintenance work as required by the company preventative maintenance program.
• Ladder work as required.
• Work is completed through use of various meters, computers, scopes, milling machines, drill presses, assorted grinders, lathes and various welders.
• Assist other maintenance departments and personnel as required.
• Liaise with all other departments including production, toolroom, engineering and quality control in the performance of duty.
• Through the purchasing department, liaise with outside contractors and suppliers.
• Responsible for the completion of daily time sheets.
• Working with 600v and 110v.

Key Qualifications/Requirements

• Certified Electrician with the appropriate papers. 309A or 442A
• Ability to read, interpret and amend detailed machine blueprints.
• A working knowledge of PLC programming, primarily with Allen Bradley, Omron and Texas Instruments controllers, is a definite asset.
• Attention to detail is key as position involves work on equipment which is not easily replaced.
• As general direction is provided, must have the ability to work independently.
• Working at heights, scissor lift, genie boom, fall arrest training.
