As a Truck Driver III in Pavement Operations during the summer season and in district for winter season, you will be responsible for the operation of a truck and auxiliary equipment rated with an Alberta Government licensed gross weight in excess of 13,000 kg. 

Tasks may include: 

  • Operate trucks above a GVWR or 13,000 kg with a trailer less than 4600 kg, such as tandem axle truck, sweeper, flusher and walk plow, safely and efficiently, following truck routes as required
  • Deliver people, materials, equipment and parts to field crews 
  • Haul, load, and move equipment and materials, including asphalt, between work sites 
  • Conduct daily maintenance on equipment, such as cleaning and/or greasing according to manufacturer or City maintenance schedules 
  • General labor duties, such as manual sidewalk cleaning, pothole, and asphalt repairs, flagging, and other duties as operationally required 
  • Complete paperwork and reports, such as defect slips, manifest logs, and safety and damage reports 
  • Perform all work in accordance with the Branch's Occupational Health and Safety Program and Enviso Environmental Program - ISO 14001 
  • Operate a tandem or single-axle sand/plow while engaged in snow and ice control 
  • Load and unload materials 
  • Perform routine maintenance duties, such as cleaning the truck box and worksite, and performing routine maintenance of vehicles and equipment 
  • Be aware of obstacles adjacent to the road to avoid damage to Public Property when operating plow, including snow off the wing
  • Inform the lead hand of any on-the-road issues with equipment or observed accident or property damage 
  • Complete simple paperwork and reports such as but not limited to: defect slips, time cards, manifest logs, safety and damage reports, spills 
  • General labour including brushing, manual sidewalk cleaning, sanding, snow shoveling, pothole repairs, manually spread sand on icy areas and other snow and ice-related duties

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 8 
  • 1 year of experience operating the vehicles assigned to this position in Paving Operations 
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions, including taking direction from others 
  • Ability to work independently under minimal or no supervision 
  • Must be physically capable of performing the duties assigned to the class, specifically in the presence of various weather and environmental conditions such as dust and noise 
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a requirement for this position 
  • Ability to work at various locations around the City, including areas that may not be reachable by public transit and satellite locations from trailers that will move throughout the season

Job Profile

Operators are dedicated customer focused individuals responsible for providing safe and efficient conventional and specialized transit services. As front line employees, Operators are instrumental in demonstrating respectful behavior towards all passengers.

We are currently seeking dedicated individuals to join our team as Part-time Transit Operators. As an Operator with Sarnia Transit, you will be responsible for safely operating our fleet of buses along designated routes, ensuring the comfort and safety of passengers, while maintaining route schedules. This position offers a rewarding opportunity to contribute to the mobility and vitality of our community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Providing courteous and timely service, route, and bus schedule information to passengers and pick-up/drop-off passengers from stop to stop or door-to-door on Care-a-Van
  • Ensuring passengers with disabilities are accommodated within OHRC and applicable legislation while ensuring they benefit from Sarnia’s transit services
  • Physical demands assisting passengers with mobility needs and devices on and off the bus while following prescribed procedures

Qualifications

  • Minimum valid Class C Driver’s License with an abstract acceptable to City guidelines, and possess or have the ability to obtain Z-endorsement
  • Competent within the meaning and use of the The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA)
  • Safety conscious driver with knowledge of Sarnia’s roads and attractions
  • Demonstrated ability to deal courteously and with dignity and respect towards customers and co-workers
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Large commercial vehicle driving experience is considered an asset

Successful candidates from the interview selection process will be extended a conditional offer of employment. The offer of employment is conditional upon:

  • Acceptable Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC)
  • Successfully passing medical examination in accordance with Ministry of Transportation Regulations
  • Successfully completing Sarnia Transit’s training program for bus operation, including practical and written tests within the probationary period.
