Embark on a fulfilling career as an Electrical Safety Codes Officer II. This position has direct interactions with a variety of customers and stakeholders by providing expert technical information and granting permits and/or providing inspections. This process of mechanical plans examination involves contact with developers, contractors and building owners and citizens.

What will you do?

• Conduct plans examination and review of permit applications for new electrical systems, changes or alterations to buildings and structures by assessment for compliance with bylaws,  codes, regulations and other municipal standards. 
• Inspection of buildings during construction, renovation or alterations to ensure conformance with approved plans, requirements, Alberta Safety
• Codes Act and Canadian Electrical Code.
• Notify applicants of findings by appropriate correspondence and reports. 
• Coach applicants to resolve issues  related to a particular permit application and follow up on conditions and notices to ensure deficiencies are corrected.
• Create and issue permits including authority to withhold, suspend, revoke and extend permits through existing processes. Keep accurate records in POSSE
• Grant detailed permits for construction to proceed at different stages as per submitted and approved plans.
• Provide interpretations and information relating to the Canadian Electrical Code, bylaws or other regulations to the contractors, designers, developers or citizens, as applicable.
• Other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

• Completion of the twelfth (12th) school grade 
  Journeyman electrician certification recognized in Alberta and six (6) years of relevant experience after receiving that journeyman certification
  OR 
• Electrical Engineering technologist diploma in a related field or equivalent recognized in Canada and eight (8) years of relevant experience in the building construction industry after obtaining that diploma
  OR
• Electrical Engineering degree recognized in Canada and eight (8) years of relevant experience in the building construction industry, at least one of which must be completed after obtaining that degree
  Registered as a Safety Codes Officer having satisfactorily completed training achieving certification as Electrical Group A with Safety Codes Council in the Province of Alberta

Skills required for success:

• Strong knowledge of standard methods, techniques, materials, tools and equipment employed in the building construction trades with experience involving residential, part 9 and part 3 projects
• Strong knowledge of the Safety Codes Act, the Canadian Electrical Code, City Bylaws and related policies, procedures and regulations as they pertain to residential buildings. Must possess the ability to analyze and interpret legislation

Your assignments will include specialized work related to process improvements, evolving council priorities(including affordable/supportive housing, climate/energy targets, and advancement of the City Plan) and complex technical work related to Alternate Solutions, Citywide Variances, Special Event permits and evolving section/branch project work such as with the Permitting and Licensing Initiative team.  

You will further advise, guide, mentor and coach Safety Codes Officers, to ensure the technical work of these officers is in alignment with City of Edmonton standards. The screener is responsible to follow all requirements as described in the Local Aviation Security Procedures and any local regulations. Screeners may be called upon to fulfill Alternate Facility Security Coordinator (AFSC) duties when required. This position will require to use equipment and follow guidelines for screening as described in the Aviation Security Master Operating Plan.

Specific Job Duties:

DSA - Designated Screening Area

The screener must restrict access to the area other than authorized personnel only. The screener must enforce proper ID, challenge and escort procedures at all times. The screener must be in uniform at all times while working in the area.

Screening:

After completing the UPS required training, the screener will now be in charge of identifying and controlling any possible threat during screening. The screener will use a variety of tools and equipment like X-ray scanners and chemical trace detectors to complete the task. Screening is the employee’s main responsibility while they are at work.

Document Management:

The screener must fully complete and secure all documentation until released to the Facility Security Coordinator, these include but are not limited to various checklists for equipment maintenance and repair, checklists, logs and any other documentation as described in the Aviation Security Master Operating Plan.

Equipment:

All equipment will be maintained as required to keep them fully operational and properly calibrated. The screener is responsible to notify the local management of any equipment or system failures. The screener will keep accurate and complete records. The screener will also manage scanners that are used throughout the operation.

Aviation Security Training:

• 1 or more years of security experience (preferred)
• Working knowledge of security operations and procedures
• Excellent organizational skills
• Able to write routine correspondence, including logs and reports
• Basic computer skills such as the ability to use Microsoft Office.
