This job is part of the Engineering and Technical Services job function. They are responsible for providing support, preventive maintenance, and repairs on equipment and systems.
 
What You Will Do:
  • Perform ongoing preventive maintenance and repairs on mechanical, electrical, and other installed building systems, equipment, and facilities.
  • Assist with the installation and modification of building equipment and systems.
  • Review assigned work orders and estimate the time and materials needed to complete repairs. Manage and track completion.
  • Support energy management by taking measures to ensure that all systems are operating in the most efficient manner.
  • Inspect new or existing installations for compliance with building codes and safety regulations.

What you will need:
 
Applicants must be currently authorized to work in Canada without the need for visa sponsorship, now or in the future.
  • High school diploma, GED or trade school diploma with 1-2 years of work experience. In lieu of a degree, a combination of experience and training will be considered. Valid driver's license required.
  • Meet the physical demands of this role including stooping, standing, walking, climbing stairs/ladders and being able to lift/carry heavy loads of 50 lbs. or more.
  • Ability to follow basic work routines and standards in the application of work.

  • Assigns, prioritizes and monitors work progress in partnership with the BGIS CMMS Team.

  • 5 years of facility operations and maintenance work experience

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs maintenance and overhauls bus engines, transmissions, differentials, brakes, suspension, steering, HVAC and all auxiliary equipment, including electrical components.
  • Assists in determining and ordering parts and materials necessary for repair of equipment.
  • Diagnoses mechanical and electrical defects.
  • Performs Highway Traffic Board safety inspections and related repairs.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of the practices, methods, tools and equipment used in the overhauling, repair and maintenance of heavy duty and automotive equipment.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to read and understand mechanical and electrical drawings and manuals.
  • Ability to prepare concise reports related to all work performed.
  • Ability to maintain co-operative and harmonious working relations with other employees.

Education & Experience

Typically, the knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position are obtained through completion of a Journeyperson Certificate in Truck and Transport Trade, Heavy Duty Mechanics, Agriculture Machinery Technician or Automotive Service Technician, combined with a minimum of two (2) years of experience in truck and transport mechanical repair including training and experience in the heavy-duty automatic transmission and automotive electrical fields. Training and experience in Allison Automatic and ZF Transmissions, Automotive Electrical systems, and Cummins diesel engines is preferred.

Working/Other Conditions

Must have or be able to obtain a Class 5A License.

The GTA Facility in Brampton, ON is FGL’s and Canadian Tire’s most highly automated distribution centres, processing and delivering incoming vendor goods to our large chain of retail stores. This facility has some 16 km of automated conveyors, 3 High speed sortation systems, our automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS) using a shuttle system storing product in almost 110,00 locations, to deliver product reliably and efficiently throughout the building. These systems work together through a central computer-controlled system to ensure product is received and delivered to our stores quickly and accurately.

The Maintenance Department is seeking a supervisor (shift supervisor) to lead a skilled team of trades, including (4) Industrial Mechanics and (2) Electricians

 to perform scheduled preventive maintenance and service work to achieve department and productivity key performance indicators. The Supervisor supervises the execution of the maintenance work plan for the assigned shifts and assists in the set up for the oncoming shifts as required. The Supervisor liaises with the Maintenance Planners to ensure all planned work has the resources and material available to complete the plan and works closely with the incoming Maintenance team at shift hand-off to ensure plan compliance and transfer of information regarding breakdowns and other issues.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead employees in the daily execution of planned (PM) & unplanned (service) work, and project or overhaul work as required

  • Work with Operations Managers/Team Leads to respond quickly and effectively to equipment downtime, productivity or safety issues

  • Review physical asset hierarchy in SAP as part of the process when an asset is modified, a new asset is installed, or an asset is relocated or discarded.
  • Review/update documents in SAP in conjunction with a change to the physical hierarchy.
  • Criticality ranking, priority, due date and age of the WO are used to prioritize work to be planned and scheduled.
  • Apply simple lifecycle costing (LLC) strategy when deciding between maintain, overhaul or replacing components.
  • Plan and schedule within budgeted overtime limits.
  • Forecast and review resource needs based on an integrated Production Schedule and backlog data.
  • Participate in the Maintenance department’s continuous improvement and knowledge collection efforts.
  • Collect and track KPIs related to the planning and scheduling function.
  • Responsible for MRO purchases and maintaining inventory requirements in order to effectively execute planned work.
  • Kit and stage all required parts for scheduled work prior to the work being added to the schedule.
  • Work to ensure all required parts are available prior to the work being scheduled.
  • Regularly review Materials/Inventory Management guidelines with key stakeholders.
  • Maintain vendor information attached to the material part numbers (I.e., Lead time, vendor part #, etc...).
  • Oversee the documented parts receiving and issuing processes.

Responsible for preventative maintenance, pre-inspection maintenance, diagnostics and repairs on the company’s fleet of trucks in accordance with the applicable level of training and apprenticeship.

How You’ll Help

  • Responsible for the maintenance and repair of trucks according to work orders and in keeping with level of training/apprenticeship (see below)
  • Maintaining safe shop environment (may include snow removal from the roof, de-icing, washing vehicles, sweeping, etc. 
  • Journeyperson Technicians independently repair and maintain trucks (see above) and provide general direction, guidance, mentoring and training to Pre-Apprentice and Apprentice Technicians.     
  • Maintenance and repair of truck bodies, including miscellaneous accessories such as hubcaps, decals, reflective tape, painting, etc. 
  • Documentation of all findings and work done.
  • Lead Journeyperson Technicians provide work direction for all team members and act as escalation point for complex maintenance and repairs.

  • Work independently to complete diagnostic, service, repair, and maintain trucks.

  • Document and update Service Supervisor/Service Manager on completion time changes, all findings, work done and potential future service requirements.

Your Skills & Experience: 

  • Post-secondary training in truck repair and/or completion of truck technician certificate course
  • Preference given to applicants with Red Seal journeyperson certification
  • Additional training in tire repairs and/or refrigeration will be considered an asset 
  • Candidates enrolled in trailer repair apprenticeship may also be considered.
  • Valid Class 1 license also considered an asset
  • Previous work experience in an industrial environment, preferably in the transportation industry.
  • Previous experience and qualification to perform Safety inspections is required in this position. 
  • Physically fit and able to lift, move, reach, bend, walk, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel and crouch for extended period of time
  • Ability to work in tight spaces
  • Strong knowledge of transportation industry’s rules and regulations regarding transport trucks, trailers, and components
