Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Temporary part-time Registered Nurse to join our dynamic Donor Centre Whole-blood Mobiles team.
The Donor Centre team is responsible for supporting Canadian Blood Services collecting donor blood in a safe manner to enable safe products which save lives every day. In this role, you will assist in the collection of blood and blood products ensuring adherence to all safety protocols and all required documentation is carried out. You will play an integral part in building and promoting a positive donor experience and encouraging donations.
Formula for success
- Leveraging your ability to communicate effectively with donors, you will conduct registration and confidential screening to determine eligibility and build and promote a positive donor experience.
- Utilizing your superb people skills, you will provide donors with information, instruction, and advice on blood donation.
- Drawing on your knowledge and experience you will provide coaching and consultation to donor centre staff, acting as team lead for collection events as needed.
- With your excellent interpersonal skills, you will work in a diverse team environment assisting in the collection of whole blood and/or apheresis blood components which save lives daily.
- At mobile events within our communities, you will assist in setting up booths, tables, and other equipment to ensure donor clinics are properly set up for use.
Desired education and skills
- Completion of accredited nursing program and current license in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in the province is required.
- Two years of experience working as a nurse is considered an asset as is a certification in First Aid and CPR.
- Previous experience as a preceptor or with coaching others is an asset.
- Technical skills including Microsoft Word and Outlook, and the ability to learn new systems and programs.

About the Opportunity
• Assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating, documenting and directing resident needs through consultation with medical professionals, care conferences and internal staff
• Providing leadership to health services staff and overseeing provision of quality health services respecting the client’s right to individualized planning of health services
• Working with the existing management and health services teams to promote communication and compliance to policies and procedures
• Administers and records prescribed medication as per company policy and scope of practice
• Maintains the standards of accurate and complete documentation and reporting
• Applies dressings and treatments according to physician’s orders and policy
• Assists with supervision and evaluation of job performance and behavior of other health care staff
About You

As part of Maple Leaf Food’s Operations team, the successful candidate will be responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of the Company’s Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) programs, policies, systems and reports for the Heritage Plant. This position will ensure legislative and Plant compliance with occupational health and safety by “on the floor” involvement with operations. This position will include but not limited to; assisting in the development of safe work procedures, training, claims management and assessing/controlling risk to reduce/eliminate accidents/incidents which cause personal injury and/or property damage. The goal of this position will be to standardize safe work methods and recognize high impact behaviours to achieve a world class health and safety program. The successful candidate will be involved in all Health & Safety activities related to the Heritage Plant.

Snapshot of a Day-in-the-Life:
- Supports the implementation and monitoring of the OHS Management system and associated business OHS programs.
- Recommend procedures to improve safety in the workplace and to comply with applicable legislation.
- Respond to all serious incidents to ensure that proper investigation and follow up is completed Ensure Pre-Start Health and Safety Reviews (PHSRs) are properly completed including written reports to ensure compliance.
- Conduct workplace inspections and hazard assessments i.e. safeguarding and lock out.
- Utilize tools for identifying workplace hazards; develops plant-wide systems that support hazard recognition; develops an effective JHA, manages the JHA based program as a key component of the occupational safety and health management systems.
- Maintain OHS metrics and documentation with the ability to present this information to applicable parties.
- Review and monitor on-site Contractor OHS programs and compliance with applicable regulations.
- Assist and lead in the reduction of Health and Safety risks and hazards through continuous improvement projects.
- Support Operations in all Safety related functions, including, but not limited to: On Boarding, Work Refusals, Return to Work, Safety Talks and Messages, Recognition, Data Analysis, Coaching, Employee Service Investigations, Pre-Start Health and Safety Reviews, Equipment Processes and Modifications, Participate in Meetings.
- Coach all functional areas on addressing safety issues and how to address them.
- Coordinate and conduct fire and emergency preparedness and response activities.
- Supports the on-site supervisory group to ensure timeliness, appropriateness & follow-through on corrective action and root cause analysis.
- Coordinates personal protective equipment risk assessment, use, care, and maintenance guidelines are provided and being utilized, and all applicable record keeping is up to date.
- Flexible Shifts, engagement in shift operations. May be required to respond to emergencies after hours.
- Supports the health and safety team members working in the functional areas on project and operational key results.
- Ensure records and documentation are kept protecting Company interests.

JOB SUMMARY
The Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion unit functions as a centre of expertise and is accountable to advance health equity and inclusion commitments, policies, Indigenous reconciliation commitments and diversity plans across the department. Ottawa Public Health (OPH) is committed to providing services and programs that are diverse and carefully designed to meet the health needs of Ottawa, and not overlook the needs of diverse and marginalized populations while always attempting to reduce barriers to access.
You are responsible for supporting the implementation and evaluation of the OPH Reconcili-Action plan, and advising on building capacity for meaningful engagement with Indigenous organizations and communities to support population health. You develop and implement a strategic organizational approach to Indigenous cultural safety, including internal education and capacity building activities, and develop an engagement and relationship building strategy with Indigenous organizations and communities. You work within an anti-racism/ anti-oppression framework that acknowledges systemic racism and seeks to ensure fairness and equitable access for everyone.
You provide strategic policy analysis and environmental scanning of new developments, trends and issues in the public health and broader health system as they relate to Indigenous cultural safety and engagement with Indigenous organizations and communities. You keep abreast of initatives that may influence the progression of program objective, including but not limited to: National Inquiry on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) - Calls to Justice; United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People(UNDRIP); and, Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action (TRC)
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of a 4-year degree in a relevant discipline including, Indigenous Studies, Social Work, Public Policy, Health Administration, Public Health, Organizational Development, Adult Education or related field
A minimum of 3 years of related experience working with Indigenous organizations and communities. Must have knowledge and lived experience related to Indigenous health.
KNOWLEDGE
- Strong understanding of Indigenous perspectives, cultures, and local Indigenous and community groups and agencies.
- In-depth understanding of current issues affecting Indigenous communities, particularly related to health and public health.
- Understanding of and experience working with anti-racist, anti-oppressive and culturally safe approaches, and in creating safe and inclusive environments.
- Knowledge of and sensitivity to current and emerging issues related to health and wellness of Indigenous peoples (preferably through lived experience) as they pertain to Ottawa Public Health’s mandate.
- Knowledge of Indigenous pedagogy and Indigenous worldviews is strongly preferred.
- Understanding of Indigenous history, colonization, racism, Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action, and OCAP® Principles (ownership, control, access and possession).
- Knowledge of techniques and methodologies for establishing relationships with Indigenous organizations
- Knowledge of a variety of change management theories and methodologies.
- Knowledge of consultation and engagement principles and practices related to building relationships with Indigenous organizations and communities.
