Reporting to the Corporate HR Manager-Operations, the HR Manager-Edmonton Poultry leads and influences the HR activities at the unionized Edmonton manufacturing facility.  The Human Resources Manager has the direct accountability for ensuring that the Human Resources planning and results (Performance Management, Recruitment, Recognition, Training and Development, Engagement and Communication) are aligned to meet the Plant and MLF operations and business needs. Snapshot of a Day-in-the-Life:

• Manage the Human Resources function to ensure that key HR initiatives are aligned with the Plant operational strategy.
• Primary deliverables include tools and interventions in the areas of performance management, work environment practices, rewards and recognition, retention, leadership development, compensation, employee development and advancement, diversity and employee satisfaction.
• Provides advice and guidance in all Labour Relations matters, including grievance/dispute resolution, interpretation and application of the CBA and all disciplinary matters.
• Ensure that Human Resources Key Performance Indicators such as Attendance, Turnover, Retention are tracked and monitored.
• Facilitate execution of plant operations and corporate programs (e.g. succession planning, orientation, PAD and DAP planning etc.).
• Working with Finance, prepares and administers the HR budget and ensuring effective control to ensure that spending is within budget.
• Drives Continuous Improvement initiatives related to Human Resources.
• Develops and drives the execution of an annual HR Plan for the facility which focuses on the delivery of key Plant and Corporate HR initiatives.

What You’ll Bring:

• Post-secondary degree with a concentration in Human Resources, Commerce or Business Administration.
• CPHR designation is preferred.
• Minimum eight to ten years previous related experience with at least three years’ management experience within a unionized manufacturing environment.
• A well-developed HR Professional with a solid Generalist and Change Management background
• A proven track record of proactively managing the Labour/Management relationship.
• Passionate about coaching, mentoring and developing people to achieve positions of greater responsibility.
• Strong business and operational acumen particularly within manufacturing and/or food processing.
• Demonstrated initiative, drive and leadership; excellent communication skills.

  • In consultation with the HR Business Partners or AVP, HR Business Partnerships, provide guidance, counsel, direction and advice to leaders and employees on HR matters.

  • Ensures any talent development strategy is embedded in talent discussions and progression with business leaders.

  • Understand and apply knowledge of all policy and procedures, developing judgement to adapt these to achieve the desired outcome.

  • Through consultation with HR Business Partners or AVP, HR Business Partnerships advise business leaders on compensation and incentive decisions using analysis of role, performance, market, & internal structure, supporting the pay review process.

  • Incorporate ROI in HR with solutions for client and operational strategy.

 

Supporting HR & business initiatives 

  • In support of the HR Business Partners and AVP, HR Business Partnerships:

    • Employee Relations –Works with leaders to proactively resolve employee relations issues, conducts investigations and makes recommendations for resolution; document disciplinary actions and makes recommendation for performance improvement; actively involved in employee terminations

    • Workforce Planning – responsibility of ensuring that it plans adequately for all the organization’s future engagements and business needs

    • Compensation – Assisting hiring managers with the writing and updating of job descriptions and maintaining them annually; maintaining internal hierarchy with regards to pay; making recommendations with regards to pay, merit increases, salary structure maintenance, etc.; making sure that the organization is compliant with the various wage and hour laws; implementing and maintaining a creative performance evaluation system for all employees

    • Workforce Culture – support the business in HR Engagement initiatives; promotes an inclusive workplace; demonstrate and promote CWB values; drive, influence, advise and support the culture and people aspects of organizational change

    • HR Programs Development & Support - Identify gaps in existing HR policies and contribute to the development of new HR policies and procedures; consult and deliver new/amended policies and procedures into the organization

 

Successful incumbent

Education

  • Post-secondary education (degree or diploma in Human Resources) and industry related courses/programs in employee relations and talent acquisition

 

Professional Experience

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a HR experience

  • Attributes include an understanding of talent acquisition processes, facilitation and project management.

  • Experience in working with stakeholders across the business.

  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, etc.); knowledge and experience with an HRIS system is desirable.

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) is seeking a dynamic and experienced Human Resources Advisor to support the HR and labour relations functions. This dynamic, fast paced role involves supporting business areas with their HR and labour relations needs as well as providing expertise in developing and supporting strategic programs across various facets of human resources. Reporting to the Senior Labour Relations Advisor, the Human Resources Advisor provides consultative expertise and service to foster and promote a positive employee experience within the EPS. Utilizing an interest-based, problem-solving approach the Advisor will work with a team of HR Advisors and other HR professionals; supervisors and leaders from within the EPS; sworn and civilian members and our five (5) unions/associations to identify and resolve workplace issues, concerns and disputes. Responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Provide advice and guidance to supervisors on the interpretation and application of relevant policies, collective agreements, legislation and other terms and conditions of employment.
  • Provide advice, guidance and recommendations to supervisors and managers on a variety of HR matters including attendance management, performance management, conflict resolution and team building.
  • Represent the EPS during the internal dispute resolution (grievance) process and work with inhouse legal counsel on matters that have been advanced for hearing (ex. arbitration, human rights)
  • Conduct workplace investigations and workplace assessments, as well as recommend and facilitate appropriate resolutions.
  • Facilitate training for supervisors on best practices in areas of performance management, discipline, grievance handling, and other employee and labour relations matters.
  • Conduct classification reviews and make recommendations for EPS positions while working closely with the City of Edmonton Classification team.
  • Facilitate training as needed including planning and delivering sessions for managers and employees.
  • Partner with Disability Management to develop recommendations and solutions for complex return to work and duty to accommodate situations.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal client groups, including employees, managers, and senior leaders, along with our HR colleague and the various unions and associations.
  • Participate on HR projects and project teams to develop new and existing initiatives, programs and resources focused on improving organizational and employee effectiveness.
  • Other related duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in business administration/commerce with a major in human resources management or other related discipline.
  • CPHR Designation would be considered an asset.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressive HR experience, of which at least three (3) years has been in a unionized environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of grievance processes, progressive discipline, attendance management, performance management, labour law, and organizational effectiveness tools and practices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both verbally and in writing, to build open and respectful dialogue, establishing understanding and commitment to initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to make effective decisions using critical thinking, experience and organizational values. Ensures a consistent decision-making approach across groups and a focus on future implications of decisions.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continually learn, embrace challenges and support the learning and development of others.
  • Ability to establish strong collaborative working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and external stakeholders.
  • Strong research and analytical skills.
  • Ability to consider different points of view and to deal with conflict effectively and calmly, utilizing an interest-based approach.
  • Flexible with the ability to set and adjust priorities in response to changing and emerging issues and timelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism, integrity and confidentiality.
  • As part of your pre-hire screening, you will be required to complete an Enhanced Security Clearance. Should you accept employment with the Edmonton Police Service you acknowledge and agree to participate in future Enhanced Security Re-Clearances at scheduled intervals or in any other circumstances, exigent or otherwise, as required by Human Resources Division.

Hours of Work:
36.9 hours per week, Monday – Friday. Hours of work may be subject to the terms and conditions of variable hours of work program. 

Salary Range:
95M, Salary Grade: PT2, $74,428.00 - $117,310.14 (annually).
