Our Maintenance Delivery department is seeking a Track Utility Person to ensure GO Transit’s track structure, equipment, and rights-of-way are maintained in a safe and effective manner.


 
What will I be doing?
  • Carrying out remedial and programmed maintenance of GO Transit facilities and properties as well as preventative/capital maintenance, inspection of GO Transit track and rights-of-way, such as:
    • Install and replace all types of track components including but not limited to rail, ties, spikes, anchors, ballast, joints, turnouts, points, frogs, switch heaters, etc.
    • Correct and repair surface, alignment, and gauge of track.
    • Install and repair road crossings, including paving.
    • Control and remove snow and ice at turnouts and road crossings.
    • Inspect all track structure and reports defects.
    • Maintain rights-of-way and signs and clear brush, vegetation, and litter from the right-of-way.
    • Establish and maintain drainage
  • Understand and comply with track safety standards, Operating Rules and Safe work procedures and policies.
  • Prepare records for the Supervisor in respect of inspections, work accomplished, deficiencies noted, vehicle equipment and material usage.
  • Operate assigned vehicles, equipment, and tools safely and maintain them in a clean and serviceable condition and maintain logs relative to their serviceability.

 

What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?

  • Level of reading, writing, and learning skills normally attained through Grade 10 education.
  • Minimum of (1) one year experience in the following:
    • Maintaining switch points, frogs, rails, protectors and basic operations such as spiking and tamping, as well as seasonal operations including tieing, surfacing, construction and snow removal.
  • Knowledge of Canadian Rail Operating Rules and pertinent Health and Safety Regulations is considered an asset.
  • Must have a valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s licence and must meet corporate standard for a good driving record.  Possession or ability to obtain a “DZ” licence is considered an asset
  • Must be able to obtain GO Transit Equipment Operator’s Permit. 
  • Must be able to obtain a CROR foreman certification and a TIG qualification.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain First Aid Certification. 
  • Must successfully complete environmental, safety and any other training required by corporate policy.

Working Conditions:

  • Work outdoors, sometimes in extreme weather conditions, involving physical work.
  • Perform repetitive physical activities during the course of a shift
  • Frequent lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds (22 kg).
  • You may be required to work variable hours/shifts to support various work programs and winter operations. 
  • You may also be required to be On-Call from time to time.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

To maintain the track and surrounding areas using moderate physical labour and technology (automated machinery). We use technology as much as possible to eliminate physical stress on the body. Duties can include replacing and repairing various track components including rails, railway ties, fences and adjusting the alignment and the surface of the track as well as responding to emergencies and track outages

 

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

Position Summary

           2. Employee is expected to provide a standardized set of tools for the trade.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Inspects, diagnoses, evaluates options and repairs industrial, commercial and domestic refrigeration equipment, HVAC, plumbing and mechanical systems, pumps and compressors in existing buildings.
  • Operates, maintains and calibrates computerized and other control systems on HVAC systems within City facilities.
  • Plans and/or installs new refrigeration, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems in new or existing facilities.
  • Examines building plans and specifications to determine the layout of refrigeration, HVAC, plumbing, mechanical and other building systems affecting the work. May be required to prepare sketches of proposed construction.
  • Estimates quantity and quality of material required for the work and requisitions material in accordance with policy and signing authority and maintains a stock of equipment and parts.
  • Reviews systems and performs work in compliance with the OH&S Regulations, Boiler and Pressure Vessel Act and National Building Code.
  • Recommends sub-contract work as required and inspects the work of sub-contractors to ensure conformance with specifications and quality standards.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of standard methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the refrigeration mechanic trade, and knowledge of the work of related trades such as plumbing and gas fitting.
  • Knowledge and ability to diagnose and repair existing systems and be able to install new plumbing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems as required.
  • Knowledge of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, Inc. (ASHRAE) standards in the areas of HVAC and Refrigeration. Knowledge of the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Act and National Building Code.
  • Knowledge of DDC controllers, computerized building operation systems and other HVAV control systems.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards, safety precautions and regulations of the trade, including the general rules and regulations of the Provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act and the City of Regina Occupational Health and Safety Manual.
  • Ability to start-up and shut down ammonia refrigeration systems; charge the systems with refrigerant, like ammonia or freon and experience with air conditioning for computer systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, schematics and specifications and to plan and prepare cost estimates for the installation, maintenance or modification of refrigeration or heating systems in new and existing buildings.
  • Ability to give, understand and execute oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, work with minimum supervision and to supervise subordinates as assigned.

Education & Experience

  • Typically the knowledge, skills and abilities to complete this job are obtained through completion of grade ten (10), a Journeyperson Certification in the Refrigeration Mechanic trade and two (2) years current journeyperson experience in the Refrigeration Mechanic trade in the building construction and maintenance area and with the maintenance of cooling appliances. Some experience with ammonia refrigeration plant operations and repairs is required.

Working/Other Conditions

  • Must possess a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 driver's license and a First Aid Certificate. An Arena Operator's Certificate would be an asset.
  • May be required to work shift work and subject to call-out when a problem arises in the field of expertise.
  • Will be required to provide a standardized set of tools for the trade.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a Journeyman Plumber Certificate and a Journeyman Gasfitter A. The Gasfitter B will be considered at the 4th year apprentice level. Certificate must be recognized by Government of Alberta Advanced Education and Technology
  • Knowledge of building maintenance procedures, construction methods, and regulatory codes in the Plumbing/Gasfitting trades 
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade and ability to work safely with a variety of power tools 
  • Knowledge and ability to read/interpret blueprints, layout, quantity take offs for ordering of the required materials
  • Experience in the maintenance and service of plumbing, heating, boiler and pool related systems is an asset
  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose equipment failures 
  • Strong communication and customer service skills (written and verbal) 
  • Commitment to continual learning, teamwork and providing excellent customer service 
  • Ability to work as a member of a team or to work independently 
  • Hire is dependent upon an Enhanced Police Information Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton

Asset Management
