JOB SUMMARY

The Wastewater Collection Branch is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the City’s Wastewater Collection infrastructure and systems including communal wastewater treatment facilities and wastewater system, and oversees the Sewer Use Program.    

You are responsible for performing or assisting with inspections, maintenance and general repairs of the City’s sanitary, combined and storm sewer system structures (e.g. access/maintenance chambers, catch basins, inlet/outlet grills, regulators, manhole covers) that don’t require excavation. 

Work activities are divided into the following groups and staff rotate through them on a regular basis: in-sewer inspection, in-house repairs, surveys, routine cleaning, special cleaning, service truck and inspection of contractor construction/major repairs.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of Grade 12

Minimum of 15 months of experience in sewer maintenance or a similar construction or maintenance field 

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

Must obtain and maintain Ontario MOE Class 1 Wastewater Collection Operator Certificate within the timeframe determined by the employer
Valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated
Must obtain Ontario unrestricted DZ class driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent) within the timeframe determined by the employer
Forklift Operator Licence
Hoisting and Rigging training certificate
Chainsaw Operator Safety training certificate
Must complete all required on-the-job training/certifications (e.g. WHMIS, fall arrest, confined space entry, etc.) within the timeframe determined by the employer.

Main Purpose & Function

The Journeyperson - Machinist will perform a variety of skilled shop and field work at the journeyman level, entailing the operation of machining tools in the fabricating, repairing and maintaining of City machinery, equipment, structures and buildings.

 

The successful candidate will perform skilled machining and related tasks including millwright type work in accordance with established trade practices and may supervise the work of subordinates performing less complex related tasks. Some phases of the duties may be more complex and difficult entailing the use of independent judgment in determining methods and procedures in solving unusual problems related to complex fitting, fabrication, machining, layout and designing tasks as required.

 

The successful candidate must be able to work either 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday to Friday or 3:10 PM to 12:34 AM, Monday to Friday. The successful candidate may be required to adjust shifts and locations as operationally required.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs skilled shop and field work in repairing, building, overhauling and maintaining a variety of machinery, mobile equipment, hydraulic systems and components and structures.
  • Responsible for carrying through to completion, the construction, assembly, installation and repair of a wide variety of metal parts, tools, and machines and usually involves working with large and heavy pieces as well as various small instruments.
  • Responsible for substantial amount of millwright work.
  • Receives written and verbal assignments accompanied by sketches or blueprints, layouts and by reference to broken, worn or sample parts. Included is the use of a variety of tools and equipment including but not limited to lathes, grinders, milling machines, drill presses, threading machines and related hand and power tools.
  • Operates heavy equipment and trucks into positions for repairs and alterations as required.
  • Performs related work as required.

 

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 10, supplemented by the successful completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the Machinist trade.
  • Machinist Certificate of Qualifications (T.Q.) of British Columbia or Inter-Provincial Red Seal Endorsement
  • Red Seal certification is preferred

 

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools, materials and equipment used in the Machinist trade supplemented by considerable experience as a Millwright.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

You will assist the General Foreman with the planning, scheduling and assignment of manpower to specific jobs within the Shop/Yard and Line Point environments ensuring that all repairs and/or servicing are performed in a safe and efficient manner, in accordance with Company, Association of American Railroad and Transport Canada regulations.

 

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Conduct job briefings, end of shift briefings, safety meetings and activities, ensuring that safety rules, procedures and policies are adhered to through efficiency testing and safety tracking document

  • Correct and document safety incidents, safety hazards/concerns, investigates for corrective actions to the various departments, involving the Mechanical Manager and Health and Safety Committee in the prescribed timelines

  • Support, communicate and deliver to key performance indicators.  Leads to ensure all direct reports have an understanding of the business objectives, as well as the role they are all accountable for

  • Communicate and interact regularly with management within field operations to ensure locomotive repair and train servicing is meeting the expectations of internal and external customers

  • Ensure that there is the appropriate level of stock/material and is responsible for ordering within prescribed limits through the SAP system.  Supports all expenditure reduction initiatives

  • Maintain communication and fosters positive working relationships with local union officials. Ensures the collective agreement is understood and managed as it is written

  • Support and participate in continuous improvement initiatives to improve productivity and effectiveness of the operation.  Support Lean Philosophy and Principals

  • Ensure locomotive bad order repair, cycle time, dwell time, productivity and key metrics are met including inventory management for all locomotives on the territory.  Coordinate with Field Operations to ensure Local Service Operating Plan (LSOP) targets are met.

  • Direct road repair on the territory to meet 24 hour repair cycle time

  • Ensure repairs and train servicing are in compliance with AAR, Transport Canada standards and CPKC policies

  • Support mechanical forces at train incidents within their jurisdiction adhering to the guidelines of the Emergency Response Plan

  • Communicate and interact regularly with local/external counterparts

  • Work directly with employees in the shop & yard environments to establish self-managed work teams and provides guidance and support to employees to bring about the vision of an empowered and engaged workforce

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess a minimum of a High school diploma or mechanical trade certification

  • Proficient knowledge of railway operations (road, yard, locomotive, mechanical)

  • Working knowledge of CPKC systems (CIM, TYES, YOP, Nexus, ITM, SAP and Wreck Estimator)

JOB SUMMARY

The mandate of Facility Operations is to operate and maintain all City facilities and City-managed buildings, which represents approximately 900 buildings and includes police, fire, libraries, child care, paramedic posts, recreation, culture, public works, City Hall and other administrative buildings, long-term care facilities, and facility outdoor property. The Facility Operations units deliver facility management and maintenance services within assigned geographic and/or specialty areas.

You are responsible for performing duties associated with the operation and maintenance of all City facilities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of Grade 10

Up to one month of related experience

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

Current Standard First Aid, CPR and/or AED certificates are assets

  • General facility cleanliness and safe work practices
  • Cleaning chemicals and disinfectants and safe application/procedures

  • You may initially be paid 95% of your starting rate of pay, in accordance with the collective agreement.; Must be able to work shifts, weekends and statutory holidays at a variety of locations.

SUMMARY

 

Reporting to the Manager, Parks and Surface Area Operations, the Parks Maintenance Technician is responsible for the security, use and maintenance of all equipment and vehicles. This would include; preventative and demand maintenance and repairs to all equipment, machinery and vehicles stored in the shop and compounds. All equipment and vehicles are to be maintained in a safe, clean and operational manner for use at all times. Along with the use and operation of the preventative and demand maintenance system.

        Licenses and/or Professional Accreditation

  • Small Engine Technician (i.e. MTCU trade apprentice/graduate)

 

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs preventative and routine maintenance and repairs to small engine equipment (gas and diesel) and hydraulic equipment, such as checking oil and fluid levels regularly, adjusting choke settings, inspecting hydraulic lines, etc. 
  • Completes and maintains inventory of supplies, fuels and equipment, which include informing manager when additional items are needed and ensuring their timely availability to maintain equipment and facilities.
  • Maintains equipment and vehicle records on repairs made, parts ordered, and parts inventory.
  • Keeps all equipment and vehicles clean, operational, safe, and properly stored at all times.
  • Ensures equipment and vehicle storage facilities are neat, clean, and organized for safe and efficient use.
  • Uses and understands the existing computerized, wireless preventative and demand maintenance system.
  • Operates heavy machinery, such as skid-steer loader, backhoe loader, forklift, and aerial work platforms.
  • Will be required to have or become certified at Working at Heights
  • Cleans areas, facilities, and related items (ex. storm drains, litter, fields, etc.) for purpose of removing hazards and preventing flooding.
  • Operates equipment and maintenance tasks. 
  • Completes snow removal and de-icing tasks through use of machinery and snow removal equipment.
  • Prepares for all types of events in client’s grounds and facilities including set up and take down of equipment and furnishings.
  • Carries out duties that meet Health & Safety standards and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Communicates and ensures good customer service to members of the public, tenants, and other staff. 
  • Serves as a lead person on maintenance crew when needed.
  • Maintains and operations of client’s property and facilities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
  • Completion of High School Diploma.
  • Familiarity with the operation and use of a computerized preventative and demand maintenance systems.
  • Ability to perform small repair tasks associated with Park vehicles and equipment (i.e. oil and filter changes, fuel/oil mixtures, tire pressure, etc.)
  • Strong organizational ability as it relates to equipment maintenance, storage and use.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment, i.e. skid-steer loader, backhoe loader, forklift, and aerial work platforms.
  • Must possess a valid Ontario Driver’s “G” License. 
  • Must have familiarity and/or training in health & safety, including the Occupational Health & Safety Act and regulations applied to this work. 
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in property maintenance preferred
  • Ability to bend, reach, stood and lift a minimum of 40 lbs.
  • Ability to work in a standing position for long periods of time (up to 8 hours).
  • Must be available to work weekends/holidays/overtimes as required.
  • Holds a valid First Aid & CPR certification (or willing to acquire certification).

Maintenance Mechanic
The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, and replacing filters and performing minor preventative maintenance on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment on all client sites to maintain efficiency and mechanical integrity of HVAC units. This position is well-suited for graduates of a college or other post-secondary programs in HVAC studies. Minimum G3 Gas License required, G2 preferred.

HVAC Apprentice
The HVAC Apprentice will work under the supervision of a Journeyperson and within the limits of company policy and trade certification. They are responsible for operating facility systems, performing preventative and corrective maintenance, and routine services on mechanical and other systems. The HVAC Apprenticeship Program requires approximately 9,000 hours of training, with a combination of in-school, and on-the-job training.  Registered 313A Apprentice with G3 or G2 Gas License required.

HVAC Journeyperson
The HVAC Journeyperson provides proactive maintenance and repair services for HVAC equipment, including Chillers and Boilers. Responsibilities include troubleshooting and solving equipment issues, developing and implementing preventative solutions, estimating and quoting repairs and upgrades, establishing and providing excellent client support.  313A License, and minimum G2 Gas License required.

General Maintenance Technician
The General Maintenance Technician is responsible for operating the facility including, but not limited to mechanical or other supporting systems, performing structured inspections, preventative and corrective maintenance, routine and on-demand services on facility mechanical equipment and other systems.

These roles will work in collaboration with all key BGIS departments to ensure full support of all activities and play a key role in our INTEGRATED approach to operating buildings.

SUMMARY

Troubleshooting

  • Provides observations about facility, facility mechanical and electrical equipment, and systems conditions and deficiencies and provides suggestions for enhancement and repair.

Maintenance

  • Performs work in accordance with established processes and practices.
  • Complies with all internal and external requirements including but not limited to environmental, health and safety, fire protection.
  • Performs regular facility, mechanical and other equipment and systems monitoring inspections, preventative and corrective maintenance to ensure facility uptime objectives are met, uninterrupted client operation and asset integrity of assigned facility are maintained.
  • Responds to routine and on-demand service requests and performs preventative and corrective maintenance on facility mechanical equipment and other systems.
  • Monitors assigned facility by conducting facility walkthroughs for mechanical, electrical, and other equipment system monitoring and inspection.
  • Operates facility mechanical and other systems
  • Manages work order life cycle progressing the work form dispatched through to completion and records resolution data within service maintenance management database. Ensures work completed meets quality, contract response, and all other requirements
  • Assists in the implementation of preventative maintenance (PM) program. Ensures that deficiencies are identified, recorded and escalated, and that related documents are maintained.

Client Relations

  • Assists in enhancing tenant and customer satisfaction and maintaining positive relations through the manner in which work is performed and services delivered.

Administration

  • Participates in and assists with facility-related projects.
  • Ensures the manner in which work is performed is in compliance with corporate and legislated policies, procedures, practices, and guidelines related to environmental, health and safety, fire protection, and any other applicable requirements. 
  • Maintains all assigned tools and arranges for repair and replacement where required
  • Submits all expenditures on a timely basis.
  • Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION, JOB-RELATED YEARS OF EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma plus trades training or experience
  • Experience providing preventive and corrective maintenance on building equipment
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain, troubleshoot and repair mechanical and other building systems and equipment
  • Knowledge and understanding of Building Automation Systems (BAS) and HVAC Systems
  • Strong client-service orientation along with a high sense of urgency
  • Effective communication skills
  • Mentoring skills required to support lower level technician’s development
  • Must be able and willing to work shifts, be available for on-call/standby and emergency call-outs as they arise
  • Must strictly adhere to Health and Safety policies including wearing required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Must be capable of obtaining appropriate security clearance
  • Hold a valid driver's license

Licenses and/or Professional Accreditation is an asset:

  • Power Engineer Certification or be willing to obtain
  • Building Operator Certification or equivalent through an accredited institution
