Coordinator, Health and Safety Full-time Job

JOB SUMMARY

The Health and Safety unit delivers a comprehensive health and safety program for the Public Works department by conducting safety inspections, audits and investigations, assessing and mitigating departmental health and safety risks/hazards, implementing management strategies including monitoring and promoting compliance to legislated and corporate requirements, developing or enhancing health and safety programs, and delivering health and safety training to staff.  

You are responsible for providing an overall coordination function for all Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) related programs, services, and initiatives within the department.  You support management and staff by providing advice and guidance, developing programs and procedures, coordinating special projects, conducting risk assessments, monitoring compliance through inspections and audits, conducting incident investigations, and making recommendations for improvement. 

You also liaise with Health and Safety in Human Resources Services and the operating branches within the Public Works department.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of 3 year university degree in Science, Human Resources, Business Administration, or other related field, with coursework related to OH&S administration

Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible OH&S experience working in a large unionized industrial organization, implementing initiatives, performing project management, and/or conducting research and analysis

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

Health & Safety certification such as Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Certified Health & Safety Consultant (CHSC), Registered Occupational Hygienist/Technologist (ROH/T) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) is desirable

Triages and refers clients to appropriate health care professionals; develops treatment plans for inmates; implements, assesses and refers to programs and interventions in cooperation with other professionals. As a member of the medical team, the incumbent must be able to work with considerable independence and without direct supervision. Some weekend and shift work will be required.

  • Providing expert witness testimony in court-based examination findings.
  • Ensuring the quality of work performed by the Firearms Examination Unit (FEU) personnel meet internal and generally accepted external standards.
  • When required conducting regular quality assurance audits of processes and technical analysis performed by FEU personnel. 
  • Ensuring proper protocol is in place for safety and security of personnel, exhibits and inventory. 
  • Assisting in the continued professional development of FEU personnel within the Forensic Sciences Branch.
  • Mentoring and facilitating the training of new and existing personnel.
  • Facilitating continuous improvement within the FEU.
  • Unit training and other related initiatives.
  • Supporting EPS, Alert and provincial policing partners organizational plans and the delivery of day-to-day FEU services.

Qualifications

  • University degree with a major in physical, applied, or forensic science. 
  • Minimum of four (4) years professional experience involving firearm examination and research in a laboratory.
  • Minimum of two (2) years professional experience in IBIS acquisitions and correlations would be an asset. 
  • Must provide proof of completion and certification from a recognized Firearm and Toolmark Examiner program.
  • Must successfully pass a yearly proficiency examination. 
  • Knowledge of the design, construction and safe operation of firearms and the various types of ammunition.
  • Knowledge of modern laboratory methods, procedures and equipment related to firearm examination. Including but not limited to Serial Number restoration, drop testing, trigger Pull analysis. 
  • Ability to provide expert opinion testimony in court.
  • Experience producing comprehensive technical reports for investigators and courts.
  • Knowledge of Privately Manufactured Firearms would be an asset
  • Demonstrated history of providing excellent customer service and ability to deal with a high case load.  
  • Demonstrated ability as a strategic thinker.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment. 
  • As part of your pre-hire screening, you will be required to complete an Enhanced Security Clearance. Should you accept employment with the Edmonton Police Service you acknowledge and agree to participate in future Enhanced Security Re-Clearances at scheduled intervals or in any other circumstances, exigent or otherwise, as required by Human Resources Division.

Hours of Work:

Completion of 3 year university degree in humanities, social sciences, sociology, human sciences, or a related field

  • The candidates should be able to supervise patients’ exercise routines, bathe, dress, and groom patients, and assist with the set-up and maintenance of traction equipment, cleaning or sterilizing equipment, maintaining and repairing equipment, and assembling, setting-up, and operating job-related equipment
  • The candidates should be able to transport patients between care facilities, answer call signals, and prepare patients for surgery by washing, shaving, and sterilizing operative areas
  • The candidates should be able to accompany patients on outside recreational activities, perform other duties related to patient care and comfort, and administer first aid in emergency situations

You will work collaboratively with the parents and Program Coordinator to develop and implement strategies to help the clients overcome significant social, cognitive and behavioural challenges. You will have the freedom to propose and design appropriate activities and will work one-on-one with the children in our placement homes, as well as public settings as appropriate.

 

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Supervise and ensure the safety of the children at all times
  • Lead structured, age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate, play-based activities
  • Provide extra support for children, as needed
  • Light housekeeping, meal prep, medication Administration
  • Engagement in social activities
  • Qualifications and Skills
  • Patience and temperament to work with children on various developmental levels
  • A valid Non-Violence Crisis Intervention Training Certificate is required
  • Experience with Autism
  • Experience tutoring or helping children with school work is an asset
  • Experience working with children in a group home, school camp settings
  • Experience working with special needs children
  • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record
  • Canada work authorization
  • Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sectors (Within 6 months)
  • Clear Child Intervention Record Check(Within 6 months)
  • First Aid and CPR level C required
  • Reliable Vehicle
  • 2 million liability Insurance required
