Superintendent Full-time Job

BA Blacktop Ltd. is is currently seeking a team-oriented, self-motivated, and dedicated individual to join our Operation team as a Project Superintendent.

The Project Superintendent is responsible for the planning, scheduling, and execution of construction operations. This role ensures that projects are built in alignment with the company’s safety standards, contract requirements, and budget constraints, meeting both customer schedules and the established plans and specifications.

KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES


Safety Management

  • Prepare and submit Notice of Project; participate in hazard and First Aid assessments with the Safety Department.
  • Collaborate on job-specific safety procedures; communicate hazards and ensure adherence to safety protocols.
  • Verify that all personnel and subcontractors complete orientation and maintain clean, hazard-free work sites.
  • Investigate incidents thoroughly, and ensure vehicle and equipment maintenance standards are followed.
  • Lead by example, upholding all safety practices.
    Project Planning and Coordination
  • Review contract scope, plans, and specifications, ensuring budget alignment with the estimator and project manager.
  • Coordinate crew, equipment, and scheduling needs with Construction Manager and subcontractors.
  • Prepare a three-week look-ahead schedule and update as necessary; communicate regularly with customers and document all communications.
  • Ensure required permits and approvals are in place and that project schedules are met through effective coordination and planning.

Financial Management

  • Review, track, and update project costs and budgets in Kheops.
  • Coordinate project billing, verifying accuracy with project managers and clerks, and ensure timely
  • submission of monthly invoices.
  • Monitor job cost codes and proactively address budget variances, providing updates to project managers and estimators.


Site Supervision and Quality Assurance

  • Oversee foreman and site activities, ensuring daily needs for equipment, materials, and subcontractors are met.
  • Ensure quality standards are achieved and address any deficiencies promptly, reporting as required through the NCR or OFI pro


Training and Development

  • Guide and develop team members; ensure specific task training is completed before job execution.

Equipment Oversight

  • Schedule and manage equipment needs with the Construction Manager; ensure operators follow maintenance and inspection procedures.
    Communicate equipment breakdowns promptly to the equipment department.

Reporting and Record Keeping

  • Collect and review Daily Quantity Reports and Extra Work Orders, integrating data into Papyrus within a 48-hour window.
  • Document site activities, conversations, and updates consistently in a project diary for comprehensive record-keeping.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 Essential Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in construction management, roadbuilding, or a related field
    Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and goal-driven individual with strong organizational skills.
  • Proven leadership abilities with excellent communication skills, both within the team and with clients and the public.
  • In-depth and growing knowledge of road construction processes and specifications (MoTI, MMCD, municipal standards, TCM for Work on Roadways).
  • Ability to read and interpret site plans/blueprints and specifications, with a solid understanding of contract documents.
  • Strong composure and problem-solving skills in high-pressure situations.
  • Proficient in computer applications, including Excel, Word, Outlook, MS Project, Kheops, and Intelex.
  • Skilled in measuring and verifying project quantities.
  • A proactive learner and mentor, committed to supporting team development and project success.
  • Completion of the Public Works Course (BCIT) or related certification
  • Construction Management coursework or certification
  • Diploma or degree in Civil Engineering

  • Operate equipment such as truck cab computers, 2 way radios, and telephones to exchange necessary information with bases, dispatch, supervisors, or other drivers.
  • Complete electronic logs of working hours and of vehicle service and repair status.
  • Ensure that all customers, co-workers and the public are dealt with professionally and with respect.

Working Conditions:

  • Seasonal employee between the months of October - March annually
  • Ability to work 50 - 70 hours per week as needed on a casual basis

You Possess

  • Class 1 truck driver’s license
  • A minimum of 3 year of Class 1 experience driving a logging truck is preferred
  • B train or equivalent, Mountain and Offroad driving experience is required 
  • Tire chaining experience is required
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening

(d) Performs exterior repairs and maintenance such as cleaning gutters and debris from roofs, minor roof repairs, replacing shingles, flashing repairs and emergency patching and caulking, snaking drains with power augers and repairing and constructing fences, gates and concrete sidewalks, patios and ramps; 

(e) Maintains own inventory of tools aslisted in Appendix B, Part I and assiststo maintain inventory of equipment and materials; 

(f) Operates Employer's vehicle including trailers to load, unload and deliver materials, tools and equipment and/or Employer's assets; 

(g) Performsroutine repairs and maintenance to appliances and equipment; 

(h) Performsroutine repairs and maintenance to HVAC equipment;

(i) Redirects contractors where minor deficiencies in the performance of work specifications are noted and reports on major deviations in contract performance on existing contracts; 

(j) Performs work that requires adherence to safety procedures/practices when dealing with hazards; 

(k) Required to utilize tact and diplomacy and refer tenants to other staff where appropriate. Required to exercise interpersonal and conflictresolution skills when dealing with the resident population. 

2. Other related duties:

In order to progress to the rank of Deputy Sheriff, recruits must successfully complete the Sheriff Recruit Training program (SRT). The Deputy Sheriff position has a peace officer and court officer designation, so is held to a high standard of conduct, both on and off duty, by the employer, the public and the courts.

Qualifications:
• 19 years or older
• Legally entitled to work in Canada (B.C. Sheriff Service requires that you be a Canadian citizen or a Permanent Resident of Canada at the time you apply for this position)
• Grade 12 graduation or equivalent*, as defined:
o High school diploma (e.g. Dogwood Diploma B.C.); or
o Adult graduation diploma (e.g. Adult Dogwood B.C.); or
o GED certificate obtained between 1973 and 2014; or
o Graduation with a university degree or two year post-secondary diploma from an accredited institution (one-year diplomas will not be accepted)
• Valid Class 4 unrestricted B.C. Driver's License* or equivalent from another province (with no prohibitions/suspensions, and a maximum of 9 demerit points on a 5-year driver's abstract).
*Note: It is highly recommended that you book this test as soon as possible as testing dates are limited with ICBC.

Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:

  • Education in law enforcement, military service, or other first responder roles
  • Volunteer experience in law enforcement, military service, or other first responder roles
  • Paid work experience in law enforcement, military service, or other first responder roles
  • Experience as a Youth or Adult (Provincial or Federal) Correctional Officer
  • A minimum of five (5) years of driving experience within Canada
  • Over three years of job-related driving experience (e.g., commercial, patrol, or service vehicles)
  • Experience working with or supporting individuals experiencing mental health conditions
