What you will do
Reporting to a Manager of Security Operations in Ottawa, you manage risks to the Bank of Canada's information, personnel, visitors and physical assets by countering threats with appropriate protective safeguards through your physical presence as an armed security officer.
You respond to emergencies (e.g., fire alarms, health and safety, intrusion alarms, access control violations) and assist colleagues as required to ensure that the security of Bank sites is maintained.
You operate state-of-the-art security equipment by conducting surveillance of vital areas of the Bank: monitoring alarms, detecting intrusion and directing response officers in an emergency. You ensure that only authorized employees, vendors and visitors are granted access to the Bank of Canada, which includes verifying and updating details on the visitor management database and issuing and collecting visitor day passes.
As the front of house, first line of security defense, you ensure the security and safety of the Bank, its staff and assets. You observe the behavior of persons entering the Bank of Canada or its property and investigate and defuse any threats or risks. You activate alarms and inform the Control Room and Manager in cases of emergency or the presence of unauthorized persons. You investigate and prepare reports on accidents, incidents, and suspicious activities and maintain written logs, as required.
The Security Officer is trained on different posts and may rotate, as required on the following posts:
- East / West Tower
- Centre Block / Kent St. / Loading Dock / Museum
- OSC
What you need to succeed
We are looking for an effective communicator with excellent interpersonal skills and tact in dealing with staff at various levels within the Bank, including visitors and members of the public.
You must be capable of working independently and in a team environment, where collaboration is essential.
You must respect confidentiality of information, be self-motivated, work well under pressure, exercise sound judgment and escalate complex problems or situations to your leader, when required. You must be able to operate effectively and calmly in stressful emergency situations.
As a Security Officer, you must possess a valid firearms Possession and Acquisition License (PAL), for restricted and non-restricted firearms and you must successfully complete a psychological and physical assessment, including completing the Bank’s mandatory Officer training program (5 weeks, paid). You must be available to work shifts 24/7 (days, evenings, overnights, weekends and holidays).

Nice-to-have

Your education and experience
The position requires a post-secondary certificate or diploma (complete or in progress) in a relevant field.

Responsibilities include:
• Following agile methodology. This includes active participation in sprint planning and retrospective meetings, creation of user stories, as well as, corresponding tasks

Minimum Qualifications

• Strong programming skills in any of these languages: Python, Linux scripting
