The Fire Services Dispatcher is required to operate and maintain Communications Centre equipment; receive emergency calls and dispatch appropriate apparatus

Responsibilities:

  • Answering and dispatching both agency direct, 911and civilian calls for emergency fire resources to incidents
  • Operating a computer aided dispatch and records management system, emergency radio system, multi-line 911 and administrative telephone system, GIS mapping system, along with various other systems within the fire dispatch centre
  • Assess information provided by callers to correctly dispatch the required fire resources in accordance with established policies and procedures
  • Work on rotating shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays, and overtime as required
  • Have scheduling flexibility for alternate shift assignment
  • Communicate clearly and precisely under demanding conditions
  • Complete regular training and maintain and follow internal operating policies and procedures. Support and maintain the City of Oshawa Core Values of Authenticity, Courage and Trust (A.C.T.)

Requirements:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or academic equivalent (minimum), along with two (2) years of dispatch experience, preferably in emergency services. 911 Emergency and Call Centre Communications diploma is required or an equivalent combination of experience and education, and APCO certification is an asset
  • Experience in relevant software applications (Computer Aided Dispatch Software, Microsoft Word and Excel)
  • Ability to comply with NFPA 1061 Public Safety Telecommunicator I & II standards
  • Current certification in Standard First Aid and CPR Level C
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly and accurately enter and retrieve information from the computer with a typing speed of 35 wpm; able to extract data and prepare required reports. Attention to detail and clarity in written communication for reporting purposes
  • Strong verbal communication, effective listening skills and ability to focus to calmly and effectively perform dispatch duties in an emergency environment with minimal supervision. Speak, read and write English fluently and communicate in a clear and concise manner. Superior customer service skills
  • Work harmoniously with others in a close environment
  • Ability to read maps, charts, engage in problem solving and provide verbal directions. Knowledge of radio equipment protocols and operation
  • Good general knowledge of the municipalities of Oshawa, Scugog Township, Whitby, Uxbridge , Brock Township, Clarington, and area thoroughfares and cross streets, railways, schools, major structures, etc.

Job Details

The General Repair Technician II is a mid entry level position, responsible for assisting other technicians, performing maintenance and repair, routine services on non-technical facility components (i.e. walls, floors, etc.). The Technician II is also responsible for performing work in accordance with established processes and practices and for complying with internal and external requirements including but not limited to environmental, health and safety, fire protection.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Troubleshooting

  • Provides observations about facility, facility mechanical and electrical equipment and systems conditions and deficiencies and provides suggestions for enhancement and repair.

Maintenance

  • Performs work in accordance to established processes and practices.
  • Complies with all internal and external requirements including but not limited to environmental, health and safety, fire protection.
  • Performs regular facility technical and non-technical component monitoring and inspection.
  • Responds to routine service requests and performs preventative and corrective maintenance.
  • Operates facility mechanical, electrical and other systems
  • Manages work order life cycle progressing the work form dispatched through to completion and records resolution data within service maintenance management database. Ensures work completed meets quality, contract response and all other requirements
  • Assists in the implementation of preventative maintenance (PM) program. Ensures that deficiencies are identified, recorded and escalated, and that related documents are maintained.

Client Relations

  • Assists in enhancing tenant and customer satisfaction and maintaining positive relations through manner in which work is performed and services delivered.

Administration

  • Records resolution data within service maintenance management database. Ensures work completed meets quality, contract response and all other requirements.
  • Receives, tracks, monitors and reports status of maintenance and repair work within service maintenance management database.  Initiates documents to obtain formal approval of work required
  • Participates in and assists with facility-related projects.
  • Ensures the manner in which work is performed is in compliance with corporate and legislated policies, procedures, practices and guidelines related to environmental, health and safety, fire protection and any other applicable requirements.
  • Maintains all assigned tools and arranges for repair and replacement where required
  • Submits all expenditures on a timely basis.
  • Other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 3 years of facility operations and maintenance work experience
  • Knowledge of processes and practices relating to facility operations and maintenance
  • Ability to maintain, troubleshoot and repair non-technical facility components
  • Ability to provide observations about facility conditions and deficiencies and provide suggestions for enhancement and repair
  • Ability to research, learn, and gain greater proficiency in applying on-the-job—fire, life, and building codes and standards
  • Possesses a strong environment, health and safety mindset. Ability to perform work in a safe manner
  • Strong client-service orientation along with a high sense of urgency
  • Effective communication skills for the purpose of data relay, exchange, feedback, and clarification

The successful candidate will work as part of the HR team to provide a broad spectrum of HR services to their client groups in areas such as employee relations and performance management, compensation, benefits, HR policy, and metrics/reporting. 

 

This position will be located at our Head Office in Markham, Ontario and will have flexibility for both remote and in-office work based on our hybrid work model. 

 

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Support business leaders with specialized and strategic HR advice in resolving employee and labour relations matters 

  • Effectively collaborate with business and Union partners to complete cross-functional tasks and resolve people matters that arise, including MOL inquiries/disputes 

  •  In collaboration with HR leadership, partners with client groups to understand operational needs; obtain feedback for program design and create HR solutions appropriate to their business. 

  • Take the lead on employee incident reviews and investigations with home Administrators/leaders to ensure processes are followed consistently and due diligence has been done. 

  • Provide sound advice on workplace policies & procedures and share knowledge appropriately on applicable provincial legislation. 

  • Facilitate the implementation, interpretation and application of Extendicare’s company policies, collective agreements, projects and programs. 

  • Accountable to deliver key projects in support of the business priorities, including root cause analysis, implementation, communication and change management of deliverables. 

  • Collaborate with your peers and key business stakeholders to add to the collective innovative thinking that can drive new ideas and processes. 

  • Develop and deliver training on HR-related topics to management, supervisors and employees as required. 

  • Evaluate needs and gaps in HR approaches and services for the business units and develop a plan to address requirements. 

  • Proactively leverage & analyze key HR metrics (headcount and turnover etc), identify trends & issues and partner with the business to implement relevant solutions. 

  • Maintain/enhance awareness of HR best practices and emerging issues both internally and externally to ensure our practices are relevant, market-competitive and supportive of the Extendicare Culture, Values and employment brand. 

  • Work with business leaders to elevate knowledge of HR trends and leading practices and provide insights around areas of opportunity for improvement or performance.

Skills and Requirements: 

  • University Degree or completion of a College Diploma Program in Human Resources. CHRP designation an asset. 

  • 5+ years of relevant HR/LR work experience within a Human Resources department with at least 3 years as an HR/LR generalist. 

  • Experience in unionized environment considered an asset. 

  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, communication and presentation skills. 

  • Working knowledge of human resources policy and practice and of relevant HR and employment-related legislation in applicable jurisdictions, including laws pertaining to Employment Standards and Human Rights.
