The Infrastructure Maintenance / Operations sections of Parks and Roads Services Branch is offering you this excellent opportunity. Our section provides services which include winter road maintenance (snow clearing), spring clean up, summer road maintenance (potholes, patch paving, sidewalk repair), street sweeping, pavement management and bridge maintenance. This position also includes Final Acceptance (FAC) and Construction Completion Certificate (CCC) inspections.
You will provide technical expertise to the Supervisors. Here is how you will contribute to the team:
- Provide technical support and prepare business unit operational work programs and schedules aligned with Capital or other District programs
- Evaluate service delivery and prepare operational plans that improve service and reduce costs
- Research and analyze activities associated with work programs using a maintenance management system
- Review reports from specific work programs and prepare a comparative analysis of activities for productivity, costs, and estimating
- Create and maintain internal and external orders for billing, provide support to field staff on equipment, materials reports, and monitor and maintain material inventory
- Assess procedural and operational concerns/issues related to work procedures, environment, and develop operational manuals
- Prepare and maintain documentation of ongoing field operations
- Coordinate safety, Enviso, and operational training programs for support staff
- Analyze trends and make recommendations for budget and operational changes
- Assist District Supervisors with day-to-day management of field operations
- Perform other related duties as required
Qualifications
- Completion of a 2-year diploma in an appropriate Engineering Technology from a recognized institute of technology
- Minimum 3 years of operational experience in road maintenance including managing continuous improvement to seek efficiencies in routed work
- Membership with ASET as a Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) or eligibility to be recognized as a Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) with ASET
- Extensive knowledge of roadway maintenance operations and equipment
- Demonstrated ability to research and compile information and prepare written reports
- Experience managing hazardous waste or chemicals is an asset
- Valid TDG (Transportation of Dangerous goods) is an asset
- Demonstrated skills in Microsoft Office Suite, SAP, SLIM, POSSE and Google
- Ability to deal with difficult employees on issues along with difficult citizens on concerns
- Self motivated to meet multiple deadlines and strong organizational skills to produce accurate results
- A valid class 5 Alberta Motor Vehicle Drivers License or operator's license equivalent

The Landscape Technician I with Urban Forestry is, in its simplest form, a passionate protector of the urban forest. In this role, you will lend your expertise in all things arboricultural to contractors, citizens and other work areas within the City of Edmonton to ensure compliance with City standards wherever the urban forest may be affected. You will succeed in this role if you can manage your time and tasks well, and have the ability to communicate and collaborate with a variety of different work units.
The Landscape Technicians hired will be responsible for supporting Forestry within its main working units - Planting, Pruning, Community, Projects. These working units are briefly summarized below:
Planting Forestry:
As a Landscape Technician hired into a role with the Planting Forestry team, you will assist with coordinating open space and boulevard tree planting, overseeing contract tree work (may include tree watering, planting or other tree work), and supporting urban forestry in many other areas.
Pruning Forestry:
As a Landscape Technician hired into a role with the Pruning Forestry team, your position will focus on assisting the pruning team’s Landscape Technician II. Inspecting the quality of both in house and contract tree maintenance activities. Duties with this position will include responding to inquiries from citizens, overhead utility tree pruning conflicts, pruning inspections, stump grinding inspections and supporting other teams within urban forestry.
Community Forestry:
The Community Forestry team is focused on providing educational and engaging opportunities for Edmontonians to learn more about the benefits of the urban forest and to take part in stewardship activities and planting opportunities. This team also oversees the GIS tree inventory and condition assessment of Edmonton’s open space and boulevard tree inventory.
Project Forestry:
The Project team are primarily consultants for projects impacting City Trees. Through tree valuations, evaluations, construction projects and design reviews, Urban Forest Technicians provide expertise in working around trees from the design processes through to construction completion. This includes working with other groups to develop and implement construction plans to consider all tree protection/preservation requirements. This team administers the Corporate Tree Management Policy (C456C) and Public Tree Permit.
Each of these units oversees a variety of tasks, including the duties listed below. As an advocate of the urban forest, you will perform a mix of the following:
- Collect data in the field, including tree measurements and assessments, required for potential projects that take place around trees
- Assess tree condition and collect data on City trees in GIS software
- Review landscape drawings and maps to determine tree ownership
- Assist with various projects which may include recommendations and tree evaluations for monetary value
- Coordinate contractor work to ensure compliance with City standards and agreements, while advising and/or resolving any discrepancies on the work
- Conduct field inspections and assess the progress and completion of contracted tree work
- Conduct tree assessment and gather information required for completing of police reports and claims
- Ensure compliance with safety and ENVISO requirements
- Assist with the administration of the Corporate Tree Management Policy (C456C) as outlined in its procedures, and track and report any damages to tree assets
- Review tree protection plans as they relate to the Public Tree Permit
- Review landscape plans to ensure arboriculture/landscaping best practices and standards are met
- Respond to public complaints or inquiries, orally or in writing
- Assist with creating educational and engaging content for social media posts, webpages, and workshops
- Assist with delivering educational presentations to a wide variety of demographics to promote the benefits of the urban forest
- Assist with facilitating community-driven planting programs
- Assist with the annual tree health and inventory assessment

Qualifications
- Completion of a 2 year technology diploma with an arboricultural emphasis or a related field, including the ability to identify and assess local tree species
- 2 years experience in the landscaping industry
- Knowledge of arboricultural techniques and practices
- Knowledge of methods and standards common to the specifications of contract implementation
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, including the ability to effectively deal with the public
- Ability to communicate professionally, both verbally and in writing

As an Electro Vehicle Mechanic, you are responsible for performing inspections, preventive maintenance, major and light repairs, modifications and overhauls to light rail vehicles. These duties are accomplished by accurately diagnosing, examining, testing, repairing and rebuilding light rail vehicles and components. Work may vary between light repair and heavy overhaul shops within the same facility, and may include related duties such as maintenance of hoists and shop equipment, etc.

- Perform preventative maintenance inspections

- Work collaboratively with the Hiring and Recruitment area to identify anticipated trainee numbers and recruitment timelines, and Instructor availability
- Independently create and implement yearly learning and development plans, including:
- Plan, create, and schedule Transit Operator and Community Service Operator training classes
- Plan, create, and schedule hiring assessment sessions
- Work closely with the Supervisor, Learning and Development and Senior Instructor to ensure all course content is up to date and meets best practice/industry standards, including:
- Maintain and update all course outlines (including the storage of archived course outlines) and the training course catalog
- Liaise with Operation and accreditation bodies (such as Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA)/MCPCC and Alberta Transportation)
- Contact firms and individual customers to secure payment of accounts, conform with regulations and deals with other similar situations
- Calculate, prepare, issue, and/or submit bills, invoices, and other payment records for billable documents or services
- Gather, compile, and verify information and perform data entry, and transfer information from reports, files, and other documents into prepared master sheets, documents, and other training record keeping systems
- Prepare, assign, track, and monitor Instructor certification requirements for the training center
- Write memos and letters for ETS training projects such as ROADEO, Smart Fare etc. for approval/issuing by ETS operations and communications groups, as well as minutes for the Learning and Development business unit
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Completion of Grade 12 (or higher, or equivalent), including business subjects with emphasis on general office practices or the area of specialization
OR - Completion of an appropriate certificate program from an approved business school/college
- A minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible and diversified office experience with an emphasis on training administration, including administration of course content and materials, working independently and as part of a team, and/or managing schedules for various internal and external stakeholders
