Bridge Worker II / Truck Driver III Full-time Job

As a Bridge Worker II during the Summer Season (approximately April to October), you will:
- Work on structural steel, concrete, or timber components of bridges, completing bridge washing, cleaning, sandblasting, painting and sealing activities
- Operate and maintain equipment such as jackhammers, drills, chainsaws, tampers, sand blasters and compressors
- Operate the bridge inspection vehicle while performing inspections
- Assist in worksite setup, maintenance and cleanup activities including scaffolding construction and dismantling, barricade locating and equipment locating

As a Truck Driver III in the Southwest District during the Winter Season (approximately October to April), you will:

- Load and unload materials
- Perform routine maintenance duties, such as cleaning the truck box and worksite, and performing routine maintenance of vehicles and equipment
- Be aware of obstacles adjacent to the road to avoid damage to
- Public Property when operating plow, including snow off the wing Inform the lead hand of any on-the-road issues with equipment or observed accident or property damage
- General labour including brushing, manual sidewalk cleaning, sanding, snow shoveling, pothole repairs, manually spread sand on icy areas and other snow and ice-related duties
- All work is to be performed in accordance with the Branch's Occupational Health and Safety Program and Enviso Environmental Program - ISO 14001
Qualifications
- Completion of Grade 8
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in operating tandem or single axle sander/plow while engaged in snow and ice control, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
- Minimum 2 years of progressively responsible experience in bridge maintenance including repair of road bridges, open space bridges and other timber structures
- Valid Class 3 Driver's Licence with Air Brakes Endorsement (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's Permit is a requirement of this position
- Ability to drive a truck in the designated weight range
- Ability to assign and supervise work of subordinates
- Ability to perform heavy manual labour for extended periods in confined areas, scaffolding and working under variable weather conditions
- Ability to operate tools, equipment and materials of the position

What will you be doing?

- Ensure all scheduled collections are completed on time and coordinate delivery with marketplaces as part of the Waste Drop-Off team
- Select the most efficient routes for travel to and from work areas and disposal locations
- Record materials collected, weights, times and locations of pickups on the daily progress sheet
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections, follow regularly scheduled maintenance and report defects on collection vehicles
- Answer questions and/or complaints from the public concerning the recycling depot program
- Maintain a clean and sanitary collection vehicle, including cleaning hoppers and traps daily
- Maintain a positive customer service attitude and adhere to all work, safety and environmental regulations/procedures
Work Environment: Extended periods of driving in all weather conditions. Physically strenuous labour is required when loading and unloading roll-off bins and cleaning material from around recycling depot bins.
Qualifications
- Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by some truck driving experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience, including 1 year of experience driving vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight of 14,000 kilograms or greater
- 5 years of experience working in Waste Services, Collection Services
- 3 years of experience driving PendPac and Roll-Off Trucks
Assets:
- Knowledge of policies, procedures and Bylaws related to the City's Recycle Depot program
- Defensive Driving Course, current First Aid Certificate
Skills Required for Success:
- Ability to manipulate hydraulic bin-handling controls to minimize damage to bins and avoid overhead hazards at collection sites
- Physical ability and manual dexterity to perform the duties of this class including driving for prolonged periods (up to 10 hours per day), heavy manual labour in adverse weather conditions, including the ability to load recycling, refuse and bin containers
