With your extensive leadership and knowledge, this position will review municipal policies and programs as they relate to the City of Edmonton and the alignment to both provincial, and federal legislation. This position will provide on-going environmental scans on related issues and trends, develop advocacy strategies and support efforts aimed at key stakeholders and participate on committees, working groups and other related forums to address priorities and issues.  As an advisor you will be the central point of contact for City Council, the City Manager and Chief of Staff, this role will be the city’s subject matter expert on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

  • Utilizing your exceptional communication skills and political acumen, and your unique or specific knowledge, understanding and shared/lived experiences  you will strategically respond to various complex situations. Qualifications

  • 3 years progressively responsible experience in buildings, maintenance and operations is considered an asset

Reporting to the Director, Corporate Records, Elections and Information Management and coordinating with the Office of the Chief Communications Officer, the Senior Elections Communications Advisor leads the work needed to ensure that voters, candidates, third party advertisers, Election workers, media and other stakeholders have trust and confidence in the election process. They are a member of the Election project leadership team and participate in election planning and decision-making, providing perspectives and advice on public perception, public trust and reputation.

Major Responsibilities: 

  • Develop and implement a strategic communications plan that adheres to all legislative requirements and broadly communicates information on opportunities to Run, Work, Vote in the 2025 Edmonton Election
  • Lead the development and delivery of aspiring Candidate Virtual Engagement Sessions, voter outreach strategies, and manage urgent arising communications and public perception issues
  • Ensure communications plans are inclusive, accessible and that they reach a diverse audience
  • Play a key role in the Election Leadership Team by providing strategic communications advice to all aspects of the Election project
  • Support the Director and Returning Officer by drafting communications and briefings for Senior Leadership as required
  • Manage and coordinate media availabilities, including developing collateral such as backgrounders and media releases, and preparing spokespersons
  • Work with Media Relations to obtain and track media coverage
  • Ensure integration with 311 and work with them to determine internal capacity and ensure they are equipped with the necessary information to manage all public inquiries during Advance Vote and on Election Day
  • Plan for and implement systems for rapid response on Election Day, including media relations, web ops, etc.
  • Plan for any post Election Day media availabilities and communications strategies for reporting official results and any recount requests
  • Other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • University graduation in a communications, public relations or related field, supplemented by a minimum of four (4) years progressively responsible experience in a designated public relations, public affairs or public information position, as well as one (1) year of experience in a related supervisory capacity

OR 

  • Diploma in a communications, public relations or related field, supplemented by a minimum of six (6) years progressively responsible experience in a designated public relations, public affairs or public information position, as well as one (1) year of experience in a related supervisory capacity
  • Accreditation in the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) or Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) would be an asset
  • Media relations and event management experience is an asset
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and demonstrated ability in communications, graphic design coordination, media relations, web content management, social media management, advertising/promotion and print production
  • Knowledge of the requirements of mass communication media and knowledge of marketing, audio-visual and web-based technologies
  • Superior issues identification, communication planning and issues management skills

As a Truck Driver III during Winter months, you will:

  • Operate a tandem or single axle sand/plow while engaged in snow and ice control
  • Load and unload materials
  • Perform routine maintenance duties, such as cleaning the truck box and worksite, and performing routine maintenance of vehicles and equipment
  • Be aware of obstacles adjacent to the road to avoid damage to Public Property when operating plow, including snow off the wing
  • Inform the Leader of any on-the-road issues with equipment or observed accident or property damage
  • Complete simple paperwork and reports such as but not limited to: defect slips, time cards, manifest logs, safety and damage reports, spills
  • General labour including brushing, manual sidewalk cleaning, sanding, snow shoveling, pothole repairs, manually spread sand on icy areas and other snow and ice-related duties
  • Ensure all work is to be performed in accordance with the Branch's Occupational Health & Safety Program and Enviso - Environmental Management System (ISO 14001)
  • Perform other related duties as required

As an Equipment Operator III during Summer months, you will:

  • Operate a Sweeper, Loader, Grader, Rosco Spray Injection unit and other various types of Operator III equipment as required
  • Carry out minor maintenance requirement
  • Perform daily inspection of equipment and report deficiencies
  • Safely operate the assigned equipment following the occupational hazards applicable to the work
  • Promote a reporting culture for all incidents and near misses by completing IDC’s and reporting when the incident occurs and remeding the issue as soon as possible
  • Complete daily equipment check sheets, Field Level Risk Assessments - (FLRA), log books and address any issues found, report to RMS or Supervisor
  • Complete Field Level Risk Assessments (FLRAs) for each location and task
  • Communicate safety and training opportunities to all employees
  • During periods when equipment operator work is not required, perform other duties which may include but are not limited to truck driving, litter control, labouring, etc.
  • Ensure all work is performed in accordance with the Branch's Occupational Health and Safety Program and Enviso Environmental Program - ISO 14001
  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 10
  • 2 years experience operating vehicles and equipment assigned to the position or an equivalent combination of training and experience. 
  • Must have 2 years experience operating Operator III equipment.
  • Must have 1 year experience operating tandem or single axle sander/plow truck engaged in snow and ice control
  • Must be COE trained and passed on both Sweeper and Plow/Sander
  • City Grader, Roscoe Spray Injection and Loader training and passed will be considered to be an asset
  • Valid Alberta Class 3 driver’s licence with Air Brakes Endorsement (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Knowledge of the PARS Operating Procedures and SOP’s
  • Standard First Aid Certificate
  • Ability to operate assigned equipment and vehicles skillfully, efficiently, and safely
  • Ability to maintain and operate equipment in a manner that preserves the lifetime of the equipment
  • Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform the work of this position
