Position Summary
BCIT’s School of Construction and the Environment is seeking a regular, full-time (1.0 FTE) School Operations Manager. This position manages the School’s operations, involving human resources, business process, space planning, enrolment planning, operational financial matters, and facilities functions. Participates as a member of the School’s leadership team, with involvement in all operational functions outside of the specialized teaching areas. Acts as operational liaison of the Dean’s Office and the School; supports the School’s communications and marketing activities. Facilitates development of operating and capital plans. Leads initiatives to optimize operations.
Duties & Responsibilities
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Participates as a member of the School’s leadership team, with involvement in plans and decisions for all operational functions outside of specialized teaching areas. Acts as operational liaison for the Dean’s Office and the School.
  • Manages the School’s operations, involving human resources, business process, space planning, enrolment planning, operational financial matters, and facilities functions. Delivers specialized expertise to address the School’s unique operational requirements.
  • Monitors expenditures to meet established financial objectives. Manages the School’s day-to-day expense management relating to procurement, contract administration, donations, and other operational processes. Manages operational reporting and related analysis, working closely with the Associate Director Finance.
  • Manages the School’s day-to-day operational activities and processes, including hiring, training, attendance, workspace and equipment management, and facility improvements. Supports development of operating and capital plans in collaboration with the School’s leadership team.
  • Develops and implements administrative and operational processes and standards in consultation with the Dean. Leads improvement initiatives aimed at optimizing operational efficiency and managing costs. Manages project viability assessment, planning and execution.
  • Supports the integration of enrolment planning to the School’s budget, in collaboration with Associate Director Finance and Institutional Research to collectively make recommendations to mitigate challenges and support BCIT’s financial goals.
  • Reviews and monitors enrolment for school programs to effectively maximize class set sizes. Provides support to development of enrolment plans, business cases for the School’s projects and initiatives, and new program proposals.
  • Supports Associate Deans with people management activities, fostering a positive and engaging work environment, and ensuring all practices are aligned with Human Resources policies and programs. Manages all staff planning processes, emphasizing development, engagement and performance.
  • Implements the necessary controls to monitor and identify operational risks, while also overseeing quality assurance, compliance and efficiency. Ensures operational compliance with Institute policies, processes and collective agreements, industry best practices, and provincial and federal regulatory requirements.
  • Ensures the School’s leadership team is kept apprised of operational matters that could impact achievement of the School’s goals. Conducts analysis, prepares various reports and delivers presentations on achievements, challenges and emerging issues.
  • Supports the School’s communications and marketing, including all related documents, publications and reports. Ensures staff, students, and key partners have ready access to important information, services, and outreach activities.
  • Leads and/or contributes expertise to School initiatives and special assignments in support of school and Institute goals. Also represents the School on committees and task groups.
  • Liaises and communicates with external partners on contracts, agreements, reporting and other operational matters.
  • Researches and maintains awareness of emerging trends and best practices, identifying opportunities to enhance operational functions and to support achievement of the School’s goals.
  • Manages directly and indirectly reporting staff, overseeing and participating in selection, coaching, mentoring, development, performance management and all other people-management practices.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business with a focus on operations, human resources and business management
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Minimum 6 years’ experience at progressive levels of responsibility in operations, human resources and project management, preferably in a post-secondary setting.
  • Advanced knowledge of operational management
  • Advanced planning skills, with ability to facilitate development of operational and capital plans and related budgets.
  • Solid project management skills with demonstrated ability to lead operational improvement initiatives
  • Advanced business acumen with ability to exercise sound and critical judgment and make operational decisions on a day-to-day basis
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to develop rapport with internal and external stakeholders, and work with staff at all levels.
  • Advanced analytical skills with ability to manage and engage in research, analysis, and development of a diverse range of reports.

We are seeking a customer-minded individual who plays a critical role in vessel operations and safety.  

 

Reporting to the Mate, Deckhands are responsible for:  

 

  • Directing vehicle and foot passenger traffic on the vessel, and to and from shore to the vessel 
  • Communicating in person and or by radio with ships’ officers and ticketing staff 
  • Checking propane tanks are shut off, and tagged 
  • Securing car decks and foot passenger gates prior to departure 
  • Carrying out under direction general ships’ husbandry, cleaning and maintenance duties of the interior and exterior of the vessel including but not limited to garbage pickup, cleaning mess rooms, stairwells and interior windows; pushing, pulling and lifting heavy stores; chipping and scrapping surfaces; and painting 
  • Patrolling the vessel to watch for unusual situations, potential safety hazards and passenger compliance with regulations; standing fog, bridge or anchor watch; steering the vessel under the direction of a deck officer when serving as a quartermaster; and keeping a constant lookout for marine traffic and navigational hazards 
  • Performing additional duties as assigned which may include standby anchors during dockingparticipating in fire and boat drills; performing emergency duties; conducting checkoffs for self-contained breathing apparatus and firefighting; doing vehicle counts; assisting with annual refit and life raft exchange; spreading salt; splicing rope; taking inventory; and changing navigation lights 

 

What you bring to the team 

This position requires Marine Emergency duties training – STCW Basic Safety (MED A1 and MED B2) and Proficiency in Survival Craft (MED B1). You have the ability to react in a safe and effective manner during an emergency and to direct and control vehicles and passengers. You have a working knowledge of safe work practices and seamanship and ability to climb ladders, handle ships’ lines and move heavy objects.  

 

Preference may be shown to applicants with a Bridge Watch rating or higher certificate. Applicants must hold a valid Seafarers’ Medical Certificate.

Reporting to the Terminal Operations SupervisorTerminal Service Agents are responsible for 

 

  • Calculating and processing fares; selling media; processing reservations; preparing and auditing media sales records and revenue reports; ordering and checking change orders; and preparing cash floats and deposits.  
  • Providing fare, schedule and procedural information to customers; listening to customers’ complaints and requests; resolving or referring to appropriate resource; and applying the Service Interruption Plan as required. 
  • Cleaning terminal buildings and grounds including washing and waxing floors/walls, washing windows, vacuuming, dusting, and cleaning washrooms; replenishing supplies and maintaining an inventory of supplies; removing garbage and picking up litter; shovelling snow, sanding, power washing, lawn mowing, weed-eating and sweeping grounds; and maintaining garden areas. 
  • Directing vehicle and foot traffic; checking and collecting boarding passes; assisting customers on/off vessel; and assisting with disabled vehicles. 
  • Inspecting berths, ramps and docks; assisting with vessel docking including adjusting ramps and handling mooring lines; giving the all clear for vessel departure as required; assisting vessel in ship-to-shore power hook up; checking for and advising vessel of any potentially hazardous conditions including dangerous goods, oversize vehicles and weight restrictions; and providing an accurate vehicle and passenger count for the vessel. 
  • Inspecting and performing routine maintenance of terminal facilities and equipment including minor painting; and identifying and taking appropriate action to address repairs or deficiencies. 
  • Staying current with company policies, procedures and operational directives; and performing various administrative support tasks including updating files and manuals; communicating with other terminals and Corporate offices; completing inspection reports; maintaining an activity log; answering the telephone and troubleshooting of routine computer problems.  
  • Participating in safety drills; setting alarms and securing terminal at closing; identifying situations which present a safety hazard; and conducting rounds of the terminal and docked vessel, and reporting any security breaches or unusual activity. 
  • Driving the fleet vehicle to pick up or deliver materials; unloading and loading materials on vessel; operating the forklift if required; and handling baggage. 

 

What you bring to the team 

You are enthusiastic, reliable, and service orientated individual who excels working in a fast passed customer focused environment. You are an excellent communicator and work well individually or in a team environment. In addition, you are comfortable working in a physical environment and working outside in all weather conditions.  

 

You have one (1) year of customer service experience and one (1) year of cash handling experience with a complex POS system. We are currently seeking applications from individuals interested in being considered for the Shipboard Management position of Master working out of Nanaimo.  

 

As Master, you lead the shipboard management team and are responsible for safety; departmental leadership; crew supervision and a strong customer service focus. The Master ensures efficient vessel operations, including navigation, route and ship management, regulatory compliance, maintaining operational records and logs, and supporting the business performance of the vessel. The Master oversees crew training in fire, safety and boat drills, ensure that safety equipment is operational and provide leadership in emergency situations.  

 

The Role: 

  • Oversee the navigation of the vessel between ports safely and efficiently, ensuring that it is berthed and unberthed in a safe, efficient manner 
  • Make operational judgements based on weather, vessel traffic, and condition of the ship 
  • Oversee the comprehensive vessel maintenance program, including cleaning, monitoring and replacement of safety and fire equipment, bridge equipment, stores, publications, and certificates 
  • Ensure a high standard of customer service, resolving and providing guidance on the resolution of customer and employee problems, complaints, and grievances 
  • Ensure that all written policies and procedures are kept current and that the route performance records and vessel’s operation are in accordance with regulatory, certification, and audit requirements  
  • Have suitable working experience as a Chief Officer or Master of a vessel over 350 GRT including management of the activities of deck and shipboard employees 
  • Act as an on-watch management representative for the Company 
  • Are computer proficient with a good working knowledge of current software programs 
  • Are an innovative leader with a strong focus on customer service and Company objectives  
  • Ensure high standards of mariner professionalism and employee relations at all times 
  • Assist in the preparation of the deck budget, as well as ensuring effective vessel financial administration 
  • Monitor and watch budget, controlling labour and non-labour expenditures, and explaining cost variances 
  • Oversee the accurate completion of employee staff time sheets 
  • Perform other duties as required 

 

What you bring to the team 

MasterNear Coastal, or Master Mariner Certificate of Competency. Experience as a master of a large vessel. In addition, you have demonstrated supervisory experience and proficiency in MS suite applications. 

 

Training in business and leadership would be an asset. Travel is required.
